Looks more annoying than anything. You have to navigate to a different screen just to turn down the radio. looks pretty cool at first for that time but actually pretty stupid.
Most fun I ever had developing code. I wrote the editing program in 1984 and I'm told it allowed the users to create/update the screens from months down to weeks of effort. Funny thing, IBM came in like 1985 and convinced Delco that they wanted to put 8088 processors in the cars instead of the existing procs.. IBM never did deliver the editing software to replace my stuff, but mine was mothballed. That was the end of the displays in the cars. It was ahead of it's time!!!
I was the programmer at Delco Electronics (part of a group with the cool name "Computer Techniques") that created the program that did all the graphics for the touch screen. This was a VSFortran program that would display the screens on an IBM 3279 computer terminal so that the user could add the buttons, lines, etc.. I added the ability to "reverse engineer" existing eprom code so that you could read prior model years displays in, modify them, and then generate new "cross-assembler" code
@peepingjesus The Oldsmobile Toronado and The Eldorado had these features also. Costly if had to be fixed but very very nice cars. I had a 87 Toronado and a 90 Toronado. These cars are still around and if you can find one with low miles from the original owner or one that has not been around so much you will have one heck of a car cause the riviera and the toronado had the 3.8 liter engine which if taken care of can get 300,000 miles out of.
my friend had one of these, it was so beat up. the thing had 380k miles on it, it had been stolen, re sold and then he got it back, it leaked all types of fluids, made wierd noises but the thing always started. it was never taken care off but wouldnt die lol...
damn dude thats badass! my dads got the same model and same everything except his aint got the touch screen... wnder why not?.. oh yeah, cuz his is SHIT!
the couple years worth of Riviera's with the computer were SO far ahead of their time it isn't funny. then Buick went & ruined the Riviera. my dad had an 89 which he gave away & probably kicks himself for now. :(
I just picked up one of these cars for $75.00 I wish it wasnt a total wreck, doesnt start as of yet, destroyed interrior and smashed windshield. That touch system is just so cool!
awesome technology for an '87. But man would I hate the "beep beep" after every single thing you do. Other than that, I could deal with the bad graphics of the touch screen.

@GenericUser19xx Well, there's a reason this feature didn't take off... it was costly, and was a major distraction.

Just goes to show all this "New" technology today isn't really new at all it was around 20-30 years ago it's just gotten cheaper (And less reliable)
