@cripfripp Its Neil Murray on bass. A great musician who's played with anyone who's anyone in the rock business! He stood in for Jeff Berlin (who couldnt make it for some reason) on this gig as a favour to Bill.
@alembicbassguy I saw Murray play with, would you believe... Whitesnake! I didn't believe it myself at the time but later read that he'd much rather play simple boring (4/4 ... 2/4) 12 bar stuff to thousands of punters than intricate prog on a wobbly stage under a tarpaulin to 12 blokes & a dog in the rain. He still had that effortless, almost aloof, grace about him, brilliant with Micky moody... brlliant anyway, just seemed a bit out of place but happy enough!

I just bought the album and was a little disappointed that the version of FGTM on there wasn't quite as good as this (even with Dave's little slip). I love this!
'70's Holdsworth (IE: "the sideman") is so much cooler than later Holdsworth. You get to see him flex more muscles as a guitarist. I was listening to Gong's "Expresso" Album, and he is great! No obtuseness, and of course the Bruford stuff... He locked himself in his own little world in the '80's and '90's, which was kind of boring really, some great tunes, but a bit of the same thing over again.

I've said it once and I'll say it again.....drummers write the WORST music ever.....ok, save Collins and his hits, and even Narada and his chart toppers....but THIS kind of stuff is just artsy crap.
The bass player here is, indeed, Neil Murray. It should be pointed out that Dave Stewart, the keyboardist, is *not* the co-leader of Eurythmics, but rather the one who played with National Health and Hatfield & the North. Annette Peacock married jazz bassist Gary Peacock when she was nineteen, but left him for pianist Paul Bley.
Bruford played with UK too, it doesn't mention that in the description. Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, and U.K. He's basically the ultimate prog drummer.
Those were the days of true musicianship. We as musicians are at the mercy of a decades-long brainwashed generation who cannot recognize excellent musicianship if you put a gun to their head.I don't know what to do with myself when I see this kind of stuff. It's so beautiful. I really miss the 70's. I think music died a terrible death in the 80's. That's Anne Peacock on vocals, by the way, same as the album ("Feels Good To Me"). Who's on bass? It doesn't look like Jeff Berlin.
What? Do you mean that Britney and 50 cent and Fall Out Boy aren't MUSICIANS ?!?!?!!? And Annette just couldn't hold a candle compared to anyone on American idol !!!:P Pfffft !!! ANYONE can program Bill's drum part into their computer software !!!! And that guitarist and keyboard player? Who needs 'em ?!?!?!? All you need is a plug-in !!! Sad indeed. I thank God each and every day that I grew up on this music, and that he gave me the ability to truly appreciate it. Peace:)
Two of the ABSOLUTE best from Bill and crew, including the incredible vocalist whose name I have forgotten. But, I've got the vinyl somewhere. Must get it out ...
just noticed i aleady said stewart is god earlier, but i just have to reiterate how great he is, the liner notes for national health's album complete are priceless
There is a clip of an interview with Geddy Lee (from Rush) on YouTube from 1979, where the interviewer asks Geddy what music he's currently into, and Geddy says, "Bill Bruford." It was from just after this album came out, so apparently the work had impact on fellow accomplished musicians.
Love this song and Bruford in general. Thanks for posting.
It would be hard to find a better lineup than this. I just wish I could hear them play something that Stewart wrote, since he is a fantastic composer.
yo man I have a set of rototoms, good investment man so many neat fills you can do and beats off them also, especially bruford type beats, you should grab a some
Hey, that's Neil Murray on Bass. What happened to Jeff Berlin? Neil played with National Health along with the extremely talented keyboardist featured on this clip, Dave Stewart.
Annette Peacock is most definately NOT a waste of time. She's a great artist in her own right, no matter how her voice sounds. I saw her recently in one of her very rare concert solo performances. She plays keys and sings her own quirky jazz songs. I'm sure Bill knew what he was doing when he hired her.
Besides Bill Bruford's awesomeness, what strikes me here is the bass. It's so well-played and so loud, I love it. Of course, it's not surprising that Bill, with so much rhythmic ability, can find a good bass player and write good bass lines. I also like the keyboardist and guitarist a lot, and the singer isn't bad either - all in all great songs, great players.
Annette Peacock is ridiculous. I never understood why Bruford wasted his time with her as a "singer". Does she actually sing? It sounds like spoken word poetry. Horrible chapter of Bruford. Luckily he wised up and went on to make some great BRUFORD music.
I thought that was what she intended to do here... to "jazz" things up a little bit. It's actually boring if the singer actually sung always on tune, specially in songs like this. In adios a la pasada she actually spoke quite a bit.

I love this band as well..just saw the Allan Holdsworth Trio(Jimmy Johnson and Chad Wackerman) this past Saturday nite in Cleveland. They were incredible to say the least.
national health....amazing band. I remember a quirky little number with a telephone ringing & being answered to hear a refrain from the song as if through the phone...or am i imaginin that? hmm smokey in here
Thanks for posting this, have any more?? I've been a Bruford fan since '72 and have studied his drumming technique which has inspired my drumming. No one has the "pop" of the snare like Bruf!!!!

very nice, but, by the way, Bruford was not in Gebesis
dugell1 4 years ago
yeah well he wasn't in gebesis but he did tour with genesis, and appeared on there Seconds Out live album being featured on the track "The Cinema Show"
druman44 4 years ago
Wrong. Bruford was Genesis's drummer for the 1976 tour.

Great gem of a brief-lived line-up. Peacock is off-center and slightly disturbed/disturbing.

I love this band as well..just saw the Allan Holdsworth Trio(Jimmy Johnson and Chad Wackerman) this past Saturday nite in Cleveland. They were incredible to say the least.

thanks for posting. have seen bootlegs of this show but never the real deal.

I prefer the vocals in this video to the studio album. Peacock's vocals aren't inherently annoying to me but they are too upfront in the studio mix.

Yeah, in the studio version it sounds like the band is in another room!

Hey men, do you know Bruf with National Health band? For me it is the summit!

national health....amazing band. I remember a quirky little number with a telephone ringing & being answered to hear a refrain from the song as if through the phone...or am i imaginin that? hmm smokey in here

You're thinking of Hatfield and the North's first album. It happens at the end of a track called Shaving is Boring.
lullingstone 4 years ago
Ah yes! Hatfield & the North...superb. Think i'd better re-purchase some of their stuff. It's been years! Thanks lullingstone.
bezale 4 years ago
Almost right ... It's actually at the end of the track 'Fold de Rol'.
setterem 4 years ago
Sorry 'bout the extra d ... 'Fol de Rol' is correct, whatever that is. Anyway, second best album ever, the best being 'Rotter's Club'. Agree?

I love Peacock too. Not the greatest vocalist technically for sure, but I love her freaky/sexy delivery.

Outstanding. I could listen this band for hours - great to see live again after all these years. AH is unbelievably good. Many thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting this, have any more?? I've been a Bruford fan since '72 and have studied his drumming technique which has inspired my drumming. No one has the "pop" of the snare like Bruf!!!!

you cant beat bruford

Best intrumentists ever heard::)
balihew 5 years ago
even better with Jeff Berlin on bass!
KenGrew 5 years ago
Okay I think I'm the only person who likes Peacock's vocals on the second song. I did then, and do now.
Thanks for posting this gem.

I love Annette Peacock - and she's a GREAT foil to Bill Bruford.
