  • This really is one of the epic Nationals. Beau did appear unlucky and at one stage there were only going to be two finishers!!!

This is something inspirational and rousing on a primitive level - like watching champion heavyweight boxers slugging it out.

Two extremely gusty horses and crazy pilots!

    Zip

  • i love hearing all these horses names - i was 8 years old when this i saw this race and i remember the horses so well - Beau, Papillon, Blowing Wind, Red Marauder, Smarty ect. lol i used to draw them all and pretend they were mind :') also Monty's Pass, Bindaree, Bobbyjo and Sunny Bay i loved.

i remember how wet is was, cheering Red home through that mud. i remember he started that race as a big fine chestnut and came home almost unrecognisably brown! xxx

  • Anybody who thinks bigfella thanks is going to win in april is sooo naive, The horse has got pneumonia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @postmodernnerd no bad getting 3rd or 4th if it did..........

  • What poor coverage Racing UK! Awful!!! BBC commentary so much better. Racing UK had been covering this for over 10 years at this time and had learned nothing.

  • Racing UK didn't begin until 2004.

This is from the original Attheraces channel.

Sorry I didn't mean to click on thumbs down.

  • ... I was ultra-confident having backed mud-lover, Edmund. It looked as if he'd been shot at the Chair!

  • will never forget this race as had e/w bet on beau who was going well when not many still standing when he got caught up in his reins. gutted!!!!

  • The two Sunderland Metric Martyrs both had £50 each way on Red Marauder due to a misinterpreted conversation with Sun photographer the day before the race while they were getting their photographs taken.

Not betting men they took 40-1 and celebrated with a pint.

  • Legendary race. Too much was happening! I admit: on the day itself it was hard to keep my eyes dry, and not just because I backed Lance Armstrong.

The winner was almost walking at the line, and I think he clocked around 11 minutes!

Indeed one of the toughest editions in Grand National history.

  • I had 40's about the winner as well . Richard Guest was exceptional as the horse hit about 20 of the 30 fences jumped ! Definitely one of the rides of the Decade

  • Had 40/1 on Red the day before, David Nicholson said it was right the race went ahead, every horse came back safe and sound which proved the Duke correct.

  • Absolutely, totally safe .... Amberleigh House was detained overnight in the veterinary hospital after the Canal Turn melee, yet no lasting effects because he came back and won it in 2004 !!

  • it this race was 100 years ago we would still be talking about it today. it was the hardest national since 1881 at least and maybe the hardest ever.

  • I used to back Smarty every year he was in :) bless. A very exciting race this one, despite the sudden lack of contenders!

  • Richard Guest what a legend!...deserved to win this

  • Awesome stuff. I always wondered why Dobin pulled up Listen Timmy, but it looks like that mistake was pretty mch bad anough to stop him in his tracks.
