Under Bush and the republican controlled congress (up to 2006), there were major tax cuts, two wars, a trillion dollar Medicare drug benefit that was not paid for, the 2008 stimulus, TARP & other bailouts, and non defense-discretionary spending. Keep in mind that this was on top of tax cuts, which means that spending increased while revenues were minimal, thus increasing the debt substantially. Much, much more then Obama has.

That's kind of what happened to Reagan.

Interestingly, Trewhitt was only 56 at this time and Reagan was 73- yet Reagan wound up outliving Trewhitt by nearly 18 months. Trewhitt died at 75 and Reagan made it to 94.5.

The Soviet Union collapsed due to its internal weakness nothing to do with Reagun. Paul Volker the then head of the Federal Bank is the person who is most credited with ending the recession not an economic illiterate like Reagan. @mrumsower Reagan spent Russia into submission actually. He won in 1980 because Carter, like Obama, ran up hue debts, and tried to monetize them. Reagan's deficits were run up by congress, but also with low inflation and interest rates, the cost of servicing that debt was miniscule. The dollar lost 75 percent of its value in the 1970s. That's wealth destruction. Reagan was dealt roughly the same hand as Obama and had 8-9 percent growth three years in. Obama is horrific.

Under Bush and the republican controlled congress (up to 2006), there were major tax cuts, two wars, a trillion dollar Medicare drug benefit that was not paid for, the 2008 stimulus, TARP & other bailouts, and non defense-discretionary spending. Keep in mind that this was on top of tax cuts, which means that spending increased while revenues were minimal, thus increasing the debt substantially. Much, much more then Obama has.

President Reagan was with extremely high unemployment (over 10%) and Reagan's approval at one point was 39%. Obama's approval is low but there is something striking in the polls. Alot of people like Mr.Obama as a PERSON. He has around 70% approval. The unemployment rate is 9.1%. If it starts to go down towards election time, Obama will probably win. That's kind of what happened to Reagan.

Paul Volker the then head of the Federal Bank is the person who is most credited with ending the recession not an economic illiterate like Reagan.
