I've grown them for the last two years - and mine are definately climbers. Grown them for the beans themselves as we have more than enough runners. Will give the pods a try though- are they stringy?
@cfenster The sun is shinning today, and apparently for the rest of the week. You can leave the beans on the plant, until the pods go dry, then use them in stews and casseroles in the winter months.
LOL they are right, does look like a dead body behind you, hahaha, a rather chubby fainted guy or something, lol...cute scarecrow. I thought the balotti beans were like a butter bean also. Didnt know you could eat the hull. I thought you let them grow til the hull got all stiff & dry then shelled the bean out and cook them in a pot.
@kokonutbaby1 I made that scarecrow over a year ago, and the wind broke the stick. I haven't popped him back up yet. You can leave then on the plant until they get big, I may do that with the next lot, but I'm just impatient. They're great in stews.
It's more usual to leave the Borlotti Beans a bit longer so you can shell them and use them like butter beans or kidney beans. ( Though, it's sometimes advised to soak them first) I grew them last year and saved seed for this year, but must have done something wrong as they didn't germinate and turned to mush...
@merseyallot Yes, but I got impatient. I'm going to leave the rest on the plant and wait. I do keep nibbling them though, when I'm on my plot and get hungry.
Good one. I'll give them a try next year. Thanks.

@Caspar33 They did really well, so I think I'll grow them again next year as well.

Very interesting! Borlotti beans...something that I'll have to try this spring! Still hoping that you get some sunshine soon!
Cheers!

@ukgardener1 I think it's something that I'll grow on a regular basis as they did so well this year.

@Greengate777 I did! His stake snapped in half, and I haven't had chance to fix him yet. Poor chap.

"occasional rain"????... this summer was so bad and wet that I think the government should be making it tax deductible....

@Greengate777 That'll just make them think too much.
