I am beginning to train soon i need to learn a form of self defense. All my life i just knew how to punch or kick or grabble in a fight. Thats when i realised that Bjj, Karate, Muay thai, ect their all just fighting styles for sport while this is for Survival and Killing. In short this stuff kills Bjj.
Imagine: you're some random civillian using your military shovel to dig a hole in the forest floor to crap in, when all the sudden someone attacks you. What do you do? If you learn the Russian art of Systema, you'll learn how to defend against this COMMON ATTACK!!
Id love to learn that, especially these days with all the swarmings and stabbings happening in Halifax lately, not that i go to the city that often but it be great to have something like this to defend yourself against multiple attackers

@YyJoBb being tall can definitely be an advantage, having a longer reach means u can hit someone before they hit you, but being short isnt a disadvantage, just depends on how u view it, im 6ft tho and i say it can definitely help
@bigglebinks Depends what style, a striking style such as kickboxing or karate, it definately helps to be tall (sometimes).
But with things such as jiu jitsu, being tall can make it harder, for instance some throws require you to bend down in order to get the opponant over you, being tall obviously makes it harder, but the advantage is if you do manage to do it, you can get much more force behind the throw.
@bigglebinks - I have enough experience to know which arts work and which don't and, quite frankly, Systema looks like another example of mass hysteria.

Systema is pretty fucking awesome and Vladimir Vasiliev is one of a kind. Top Systema with Krav Maga (with Nir Maman) and you'll get some military type training, great self-defense techniques, and a fun time at their seminars.
My Sensei's friend, a Karate 2nd Dan and a pretty damn good one at that, went to Russia some years ago to study some of their systems. When he got down to training, even he was terrified to find that the ex-soldier types who were going to it were practicing in steel-toecapped boots. And I mean full contact martial arts, not kata or anything.

@renneabad03 I trained both and I share your opinion. Systema takes much longer to master and lacks (at least in most schools) tough, non cooperative sparring. On the other hand, Systema is much, much more deeper and fulfilling IMO. The basic principles, for striking, or dealing with pain & effort, are valuable to anybody interested in any martial art.

@YyJoBb being tall can definitely be an advantage, having a longer reach means u can hit someone before they hit you, but being short isnt a disadvantage, just depends on how u view it, im 6ft tho and i say it can definitely help

@bigglebinks Depends what style, a striking style such as kickboxing or karate, it definately helps to be tall (sometimes).
But with things such as jiu jitsu, being tall can make it harder, for instance some throws require you to bend down in order to get the opponant over you, being tall obviously makes it harder, but the advantage is if you do manage to do it, you can get much more force behind the throw.

My Sensei's friend, a Karate 2nd Dan and a pretty damn good one at that, went to Russia some years ago to study some of their systems. When he got down to training, even he was terrified to find that the ex-soldier types who were going to it were practicing in steel-toecapped boots. And I mean full contact martial arts, not kata or anything.
Now that's what I call training!

@renneabad03 I trained both and I share your opinion. Systema takes much longer to master and lacks (at least in most schools) tough, non cooperative sparring. On the other hand, Systema is much, much more deeper and fulfilling IMO. The basic principles, for striking, or dealing with pain & effort, are valuable to anybody interested in any martial art.
