This scene is probably the most epic climax to a game I can remember. Then it tantalizes you with a cliffhanger. Then they didn't make a sequel! Damn you Volition! I'll buy Freespace 3 if you make it! I promise!!!
Now with the lack of people owning joysticks i doubt it ever will be as the player base doesn't exist. Sure, you can play on keyboard or mouse but its not the same. Sigh.
This site shows an interview with one of the devs/creators of the series explaining where the series was going/ending. Real shame about it never being made.
I enjoy the open vistas that these games left me after completion, but I'd LOVE to see this gameserie's story end in a fantastic and climatic finish of Freespace 3!

Something that Volition was probably going to answer in Freespace 3 which sadly will never happen due to legal issues regarding ownership of the franchise, Volition created the games yes but they were published and owned by Interplay which went bankrupt about a decade ago and somewhere in that dead companies endless paperwork are the files that show ownership of the franchise which are unobtainable by any means, its quiet sad really.
@242nd AFAIK |V| had no idea what to do with shivans and they had no specific idea for FS3. Personally, I think all the Satahasses were meant to leave, but few of them simply lost power.
:V My only gripe about FreeSpace 2's cutscenes is that they weren't quite the visual quality (for the most part, at least) of the first game's cutscenes. FreeSpace 1's cutscenes put all sorts of details into the ship models and the ship lasers actually looked like bolts of energy instead of low-poly blobs of a flat red color.
Of course, the part where the supernova hits the ships looks amazing :)
capella is a double star system. Seen the things myself. and they are way waaaay more bigger than freespace 2 suggests. other than that; i loved this game

Capella has gone supernova, I repeat, Capella has gone supernova! Overpowered shivans causing a subspace field inside the sun tearing it apart and forcing the star to overload and release all its energy. But if you had a hundred Alpha 1s with Helios missiles you could take out their primary beam cannons and that wouldn't happen...
@anonymus070 You don't want a Freespace 3. The SCP is the true successor to this game in my eyes. The joy of FS 2 is that it was left open ended, which makes for tons of great campaign ideas.
Chances are that if a Freespace 3 *was* ever made (which it won't be), it would be a complete and utter disappointment.

They're a development house for THQ. They did Saints Row, Red Faction, and they're working on the Guillermo del Toro game, InSANE. They're also cleared for a Saints Row 3. Trust me, they're one of the biggest game development houses in the industry, and are plenty alive and healthy right now.
Though I really REALLY hope they get a jump on Freespace 3, just to make me totally geek out. There's so much of the story still left open!
@vest816 Yep, the problem here is that the license for the FS series does not belong to THQ but to another publisher, which name I currently forgot.
Anyway to get a new FS THQ needs to get this license so that there is nothing in the way for a NEW FS game as I completely agree with you that we all NEED a sequel to the story in order to explain what happened after the destruction of capella as well as what was up with the ancients etc. .
@DurandalThoth Don't get me wrong I also like the Source Code Project and loved and played it to death but the ONLY way to have a BIGGER CANON universe new ship types introduced into CANON etc. is via a NEXT Installment in the franchise and this will be only possible via a FreeSpace 3 game ;).
However the mods that are out there and the dozens of campaigns are really well made and expand the universe by a big notch but still I think every soul out there wants a trilogy in the FS universe.
This scene was actually very symbolic for me. When you see the two Corvettes fighting and getting killed together makes you believe the GTVA could fight the Shivans on equal footing. They just don't have the numbers to do it.
