Ink cartridges cost that much b/c they have the printing head - the most high-tech piece of the average $50-100 inkjet printer - built into them. And no, your aren't necessarily better off with an aftermarket cartridge, because who knows if they make the printing head part as good as the original manufacturer?

You're best off with refilling your own cartridges. There are places that do that for ya, or you can buy your own kit for like $10 and that's good for like 10 refills.
