@zzytrewq don't know where your history comes from bud but this is the mk1 and if you did know your history then you would know that ford pulled out of racing in 1967 after the mk4 won le mans, so John wyer continued to work on the mk1 with gulf being a sponsor and he started on the mirage mk1 of which this car is, there was not one thing the Americans engineered in this car we are commenting on. If you knew your history you would know that the mk4 was the only true American "gt40" j car which
you can still get these cars at about 60grand now thought they are kit cars. they still have the same horsepower body look ect ect.. but when selling it you have to say its a kit car not a original hint the 40grand price difference.. but I'll take a kit car!
@TheHiroCameron Superformance GT40's are not kit cars and they are 100% Identical to the original and built in Port Elizabeth, South Africa by HY-TECH Automotive. Superformance is only the Selling Dealer for these cars. Do Not put Superformance Cars in the same class as the Kit Cars in the market. They are 95% hand built in the factory and the other 5% is the Motor and Trans which you supply. They are not in the car due to DOT Laws.
@Bunnysniffer - What part don't you agree with? It was a British design (based on the Lola) and didn't win anything of note till the body was redesigned, the drag due to internal airflow reduced, the Colotti gearbox ditched and racing development handed over to Carrol Shelby and Kar-Kraft in the US.
Mind you I'm only quoting from a couple of books about the history of the GT40 and they could be wrong. Not.
@zzytrewq just saw that I posted this 2 months ago and just want to say sorry for being inpolite. What I meant was that the Americans aren't know for their flawless cars, sure there are a few good cars but it really doesnt compare to the german (and some other european) cars in my opinion.
@Bunnysniffer - I'm not sure what your point is. The GT40 was a race car. It beat the other race cars of the time. The American input has nothing to do with "flawless cars". Today's road cars are a different story.
@zzytrewq It has nothing to do with the country it originated from. Take a look at the McLaren F1, that won on it's debut at Le mans. It was British and it was so damn good that there were practically no flaws to engineer out. Don't say the Brits can't engineer as it was just as good as or better than what the Americans have done since. The GT 40 was still an incredible car for the time but don't feel that America's engineering is in any way superior to everyone else. :)
@jcadlols - I think you're being argumentative. My comments related specifically to the GT40. It wasn't a winner till it was re-engineered. I wasn't suggesting the Americans are better I said they got hold of it and re-engineered it and got rid of the flaws. Most likely the Brits could have done the same thing but at the time their approach to racing was different. I was a huge fan of the Lola and was so disappointed when the GT40 flopped initially. Read the GT40 history like I did.
It is a continuation of the original as 90% of the parts are directly interchangeable with the original, and it is so close, it is eligible for historic racing. The Ford GT is larger, heavier, slower, a similar shape granted, but entirely different in concept. It is designed as a road car. The GT40 is designed as a racing car useable on the road, similar to the Ferrari F40 in concept.
So what would you think that chassis numbers GT40P 1090 to 1120 are, built April 1981 to March 1986 or later? These are generally considered as Mk V GT 40's. Maybe you have a different opinion.
I have got one of these in the Gulf livery without the roundels. 459 bhp. Much better than any Ferrari or Lamborghini as I can work on the car easily. No cam belts to replace at £2500 a time. Cheap reliable engine. It gets a very favourable response from the public every time I drive it, especially in Silverstone village where I was mobbed by enthusiasts at the GP. Takes a while to learn how to drive it properly, vision restricted, clutch very heavy, but extremely fast but also very docile.
Mmm, I can never really say that I would take one car over another...because I can't ever make up my mind. I'd say I'd take one over the other for a reason, but then for the same reason from another angle I'd take the other...
So, I could say I'd take an F355 over this, but then for the same reasons, I'd take this over an F355.
I'd take one of these if it were the same, and had all modern refinements...air con, P/steering, P/windows (maybe) etc...
This chassis numbers carry on from the original. My one is GT40P 2194. They are continuations of the original licenced by the owners of the Gt40 trade mark.

not 100%. The originals were right hand drive with the shifter next to the door.

Great piece of British engineering!!

@jcadlols - great British car. German engine. American transmission. LOL

Since European companies don't use American tech in their cars too...
You are awfully niave.

Sorry but, it just is. There is no such thing as "continuation of the original.". What about the Ford GT then?

$22k/12k sterling p "cheap engine"???????????

Compared with a Lamborghini or a Ferrari, yes, plus spares are much cheaper, plus it is much easier to get at and work on.

The real deal is something that barely anyone can have. This is as good as it gets. I love kit cars.

It is not a kit car, it is a continuation of the original. I have one.

when a real one costs 1 million and an exacting replica costs 60-100 thousand...i think i'll take the replica. unless i strike oil.
bford89000 3 years ago
Also; aren't these the ones that carry on the chassis numbers?
...Or official numbers of sorts, so in all technicalities...they're original? :P
ijoostin 3 years ago
Yes. They have all the approval to call them offical chassis. I`d take one of these over any Lambo or Ferrari.
