I personally consider In Flames to be one of the bands that highly influenced Melodic Death Metal, but they're a Gothenburg metal band. so is Dark Tranquility, much different than Melodeath. But the term "Death Metal" says it all. There's no fucking singing!

Try comparing old Pilgrim with the shit-tacular version off Root of Evil or whatever. The original is metal, the Gossow version is glossy pop-metal shit. I like both of them, but I seriously prefer the infinitely more brutal old Arch Enemy.

Even I prefer Angela more, Arch Enemy made awesome songs when Liiva was vocalist. Liiva is really good vocalist in his own way but in some songs his vocals just didn't fit.. But these, Fields of Desolation, Burning Bridges, Tears of The Dead, Diva Satanica, Demoniality, Bridge of Destiny, Dead Inside, Bury Me An Angel, Dark Insanity. All good tracks.. This band was badass before Angela, Arch Enemy is still badass and it will be forever. I don't care what others say, this band is the #1 for me.

Earlier Arch Enemy stuff sounds rawer and more melodic at the same time in a kind of way, which I like as much as their newer, post-Liiva stuff, but I must say Angela's growling is 1000 times better than Liiva's vocals IMO

Arch Enemy with Liiva was the best in my opinion as well. He's one of my favorite metal vocalists. Him and Jeff Walker of Carcass. Early Arch Enemy has a very raw and brutal style that is becoming rare. Arch Enemy's newest stuff is..... not that good.....seems more like Metal for the masses as opposed to Metal for the underground. To put it plainly, Arch Enemy sold out like In Flames. They should be ashamed they threw away such awesomeness.

Arch Enemy is still awesome regardless. They can't seem to make a bad song. Johan was great for that era of AE, but Angela has picked it up and taken it to other dimensions. If you listen closely, a lot of what they wrote back then can still be heard in their new songs. In This Shallow Grave is part of the new album, and it's pretty brutal. Yes most of it isn't as brutal as back then, but bands do evolve. AE isn't even as big as they deserve to be.

The old Arch Enemy was a great example of LEGIT, REAL, TRUE Melodic Death Metal.

It's heavy, slow-to mid-to fast paced, brutal yet melodic, and is a wall of noise, anger and melody, the way melodic death metal should be.

Its not extreme power metal with harsh vocals, its not metalcore influenced, its not extremely modern and over produced, Its Melodic death metal the way it should be
