  • I remember a few of the faces from the Salvation Army scene, I use to see them around the streets of WHITECHAPEL all the time up until the early 70s, Incidentally, that Salvation Army building has now been sold and converted into "luxury" flats, the cheapest of which, a one bedroom apartment, will cost you in excess of £300,000, (and that dose not include an egg & 2 slices) The Salvation Army now have a more modern building on WHITECHAPEL RD, and sadly, even in 2012 it is STILL ALWAYS FULL.

  • I think I'll slit my throat now.

  • And this was under a LABOUR Govt. Although it had been caused by history of Tory cunts really, as Labour had only been back in about 2 years here, after 13 years of Tories and things were only as good as they were in the 1950s cos of the Labour Govts revolutionary reforms of 1945 to 1951. The 60s Labour Govt would improve things greatly much further for most working class people over the next 4 years

  • @TheKenfig Party politics of ALL persuasions have been the RUIN of this country, and the LABOUR party have done more to destroy the working class people than anyone, if you have faith in any political party to do what is best for YOU as opposed to what is best for THEM then I pity you.

  • @hawkiethenew Do you REALLY think the Labour party has done more to destroy the working class people than ANYONE ? ; is THAT what you're saying ?

  • @TheKenfig YES, I have spent the whole of my 67yrs of life living in the EAST END, LABOURS HEARTLAND, You want me to give you an example, The LABOUR party have just spent 13yrs deliberately filling the country with immigrant workers to provide an overpopulated supply of a cheap (and desperate) workforce for the PARASITES OF THE CORPORATE BUSINESS WORLD TO EXPLOIT, So who do you think has suffered most from this policy ? BANKERS ? People who live in MAYFAIR ? The STOCKBROKERS of SURREY ? WAKE UP.

  • @hawkiethenew I don't CARE whether or not you're black ; racism can exist in ANY colour. I hope you enjoyed spying on me to see what you could 'unearth', Lol. Firstly, I have NOTHING to hide or I would HIDE it, and secondly, the use of WORDS tells NOTHING about a person ; I was brought up with LOADS of people around me, ALL non racists, who used the word 'nigger'. A friendly black teenager said to me, a white man, "what's happening my nigger ?" and he was a friend of mine, Lol

  • it used to be common to see alcholics drinking the purple metholated spirits. True gut rot! Thankfully thanks to the very helpful brewerys you can get high alchohol volume beer like tenants super and carlsberg special brew and now they can get get pissed on that.

  • @3Deity YEA YOU BRING THE CAMERA AND 2 CAPS AND I WILL KILL MYSELF THE VIDEO WILL BE VIRAL LOL

  • Spike Milligan did a scetch with B&W pics of around The Thames "These men, warming themselves by meagre fires, getting food from soup kitchens and drinking cheap liquor. Some of these men haven't worked in 15 years. Lucky bastards!"

  • god this makes me want to kill myself

  • @BILLYnKAREN sadly, i think you are right. thanks.

  • some things will never change

  • Great clip, horribly overdubbed in places. James Mason in a flat cap. Ridiculous.

  • And they complain today if they don't get £150 per week state benefit. God bless these old boys and girls. And the chaps still wear their ties.

  • Is this Stepney?

  • @Amber3London hi ... i think it is stepney becuz i remember one of these man in this video when i was much younger . ... bloody sad bless

  • So sad.

  • lol - 63 shillings and a free breakfast !! WRONG - it's 63 shillings and breakfast INCLUDED . . . . it's like been on a mobile phone contract and saying you get free minutes! WRONG! you've paid for them minutes.

I'm going back now to 1967 to give that bloke a gobfull, guess I'll have to have a room too for 6 bob . . .

  • Phew! I thought hold up a minute! Mobile phones in those day??

  • London has always been a diverse place with foreigners but mainly whites and its always had its poverty too, not much has changed , we still live in a society with racism and prejudice.

  • i think the best thing james mason could do , is to fuck off.

  • @mario26072 You're not wrong there mate! Patronising cunt in his flat cap which somebody has lent him. What a twat..

  • Someone tell the old boy that he has had his mobile phone stolen

  • They used to call this a Spike. There used to be one on Borough High St in Southwark. Youd see the vagrants mixing milk with their meths so as to keep it down. Then theyd stagger off and fall into a roadworks, or worse into the street and get run over. Really terrible.

  • I love this film and bought the DVD recently. These scenes are really poignant. All these people had a childhood, youth and lived a life of some sort, only to end up in a hostel. There's a real sadness here. On the positive side I think James Mason makes a great interviewer. He talks directly to the men and seems to empathise with them without being patronising in any way.

  • I feel for these old chaps, but on the whole I think Britain was better in those days.

  • Better times!

  • please post all of this mate. please i love it!

  • most of it is already up in differant parts. It's not actually a very long film.

  • @boomboxbadboy1 The whole thing has now been uploaded on here.
