Reminds one of a time when Britain was not only Great enough to invent instant mash, but to creat an advert worthy of this exquisite achievement. The Bachesque jingle, the ironic comedy brilliance of the script, and animation to rival Walt Disney. Just magnificent. Makes one proud to be English.
And did those feet in ancient times walk upon England's mountains green.
Isn't it interesting that an advert that's at least 30 years old and involves a bunch of robots who look like talking barbeques is more interesting than the vast majority of adverts today?
@Aneurysmer51 Well I guess you can always experiment by sprinkling some of their chocolate onto the Smash potato. It can’t hurt to try? Who knows it might taste better.
When I was 7 or 8 I thought the Smash adverts were absolutely the coolest things on the telly. So much so that I badgered and nagged my mother into replacing real spuds on the dinner table with a plate of Smash one evening. Sweet Jesus of Nazareth.....the stuff was VILE. But I loved the robots so much, I wanted to like it. So did a lot of kids....now there is one brilliant advert campaign
The Smash robot aliens were created by Sian Vickers and Chris Wilkins, according to Wikipedia. Supposedly, they were the same duo responsible for Direct Line's red phone on wheels.
"they peal them with there metal knives, boil them for twenty of there minuites then they smash them up into little bits hahahahahah" fecking love this ad since i was a little girl! best advert ever aired!!!
I wonder how many of you remember a series of books (early eighties) featuring these martians each book centered around a martian called Zeeb if you can get hold of them they are absolutely bloody hilarious i still have them and will never part with them.
I read this article saying return of the honey monster (The ad is on tv). But I read on and it said the Smash Martians are coming back - but the question is when?
Back in the 80's im pretty sure they made crisps as well, Pringles style, in a tube. But I seem to be the only one who remembers them. Can somebody tell me if I'm right or just hallucinating.
This a great Ad, and, as you know, was first shown back in the Seventies, so it was great to see that in 1999, it was voted the best commercial of all time... and rightly so.
I can just imagine daleks doing the exact same thing! :-)
