thank u for using a dead rat, u have no idea how many sickos will give their snakes lizards turtles and even dogs live rats to torture and eat. I keep rats as pets and what alot of people don't realize is that their the most affectionate and intelligent of all the rodents. thank u.
@skyangel11871 Thanks for the nice comment. All I seem to get is 'Why don't you use a live one?' The answer is always the same, it's cruel, not essential and illegal. I too used to have them as pets. Reptiles are more than happy to eat dead rodents.
awsome vid hun ;) props for the prekilled prey item to ;) my turtles love a good mouse or rat on ocassion to espiclay my snappers or my afrcian sideneck.
ok at least its dead its sick that another person put up a video of a live one about that size and video taped it climbing on the turtles backs so he can survive hes swimming lik crazy to get away from 6 turtles in a little bowl
Well, thank for saying take care after you've called me an unnatural, abusive and selfish keeper. I've found in my experience that the ignorant ones are the first to say what you're doing is wrong. Just so you know, in that particular tank none of the turtles are anywhere near full grown and it has multiple basking spots that can't be see in the video. When my turtles get bigger they are moved into a 1500 litre tank. Before you slag someone off on the internet, maybe take to time to think.
Too many in one tank. 100 gallon's good for one full grown, 2 max if needed. I see you love your turtles but there's way to many in one tank which you might not be able to tell but stresses them out. They need space and their natural enviroment gives them that until comes basking time then they will pile for the same spot. I'd suggest you adopt out, or offer to sactuaries if you really love them and care to see them happy. This is far from natural and is abusive and a little selfish. Take care.
lol i did that with some baby ducks and worms the duck bills just went like bzzzzzzt(shaking extremely fast) and it just seemed like the worms were melting into the duck's mouths
I can only assume that you know nothing about turtles as there are only a few species that are not carnivores. The majority of turtle species eat approx. 90% meat and 10% plant matter. They eat whatever they can find. Be it fish, small mammals or inverts.
Before you accuse someone of being an idiot, do a bit of research and don't feed your ignorance.
Well, they will eat practically anything. But be careful with seafood though if you feed it to them all the time. There is too much salt for turtles in seafood. Unless you have a sea turtle they wouldn't really come across what you might get in a bag of mixed seafood in the wild. They would still need a variety of food if you only feed them seafood. Like I said, it's too much salt for them.
do yours ever fight? you have quite a few in a relatively small area and they seem to be getting along. i only had 2 about the same size as these in I thought a big enough tank..they were together a long time then they started fighting and shit so i had to let one go.
I usually do but I think giving them a bit of resistance to fight against for a bit makes the whole thing a bit more natural. It's the same with my snakes. They're happier to feed if you don't release the prey straight away because to them it seems like it's alive.
Plus because I was filming it, if i hadn't held on to it they would of taken it down and eaten it out of sight. Then the video would have been a bit boring. If you see what i mean.
No, it's illegal to feed live mammals to reptiles in this country unless you have permission from a vet. This would only be given if your turtle, snake etc would not eat in any other way. All mice, rats etc are bought dead and frozen. Obviously defrosted before feeding.
Oh. I'll settle wif jak and jill, though im not sure of the genders... They don't seem to be eating when I fed them pellets the last 1 day, but when I changed to lettuce today i think they ate some, coz i disapeared slowly.
Your looking at about 20-30 years on average. But many live up to and past their 40's. You're also looking at about 12" in shell length which doesn't sound much until you see one and it's bigger than your head. If you have the time and the dedication though they will bring you a lot of joy.

From most reptile shops. But make sure you really look into what species you want first. Most get quite big. They live for a very long time and are quit aggressive. like I say, do some research first as some shops don't give out the correct information.
No they're all red bellies, yellow bellies & red ear sliders. It's naturally just how they are. I keep fish with some but one red ear just hunts down anything that's not a turtle and eats it. I have more turtles that aren't in this clip and apart from 1, they are all aggressive feeders. The 1 that's not is an Amazon River Turtle and it is a veggy. If I just feed them pellets they are fairly tame. If it's a larger item they generally all try to eat the same one.
Your turtles are probably just used to the fish in there as part of their environment. If you were to move them all into a different tank, or just change theirs around, they would think they were different fish and would probably eat them.
Normally I feed them pellets but they really enjoy the odd pinky mouse and rat pup. As you can see they go mad over a mouse too. These are treats for them though. Don't want them getting overweight.
hey dude how big are your turtles mine is 4 1/2 inches do you thing hes big enough to eat a mouse or something go and check him out its pretty awesome ive already fed him a mouse pup

Turtles aren't sposed to eat rats.

After a few feeding of smaller insects yes they can.
Sumdude55 3 years ago
what's the point of feeding them rats if they can eat other food? Like pellets, crickets, shrimp, ect.
TheUnknowDweller 3 years ago
I offer them a variety of food. They wouldn't just eat the one thing in the wild. I'll only offer them a mouse or a small every now and then.
JAMESNADIA 3 years ago
correct, but consider the other options~
I purchase a pack of mixed seafood for my turtles and they love it =]
it gives their diet such a variety
TheUnknowDweller 3 years ago
Well, they will eat practically anything. But be careful with seafood though if you feed it to them all the time. There is too much salt for turtles in seafood. yea i know
they only get it on very rare occasions
once every few weeks
but i also just noticed....
doesn't feeding them a rat dirty up their tank at all?

Not really. I only rarely do it and when I do they eat every bit. Plus I've have very large filters on my tanks.
