Hey dude, really nice playing! Noticed you posted this a couple years ago and was wondering if you figured out the solo and if so could post a vid. I'm just learning this song now and vids help a lot along w/ the sheet music. Also, just a tip from a fellow player some of the runs where you are fretting just one note at a time can be played easier (and make the song much more fun to play) if you fret it as part of the chord/scale the run is based off. if you want me to post a vid id be glad to!
@drfacestealer Thanks! Unfortuanately, I've developed RSI from years of bad practice habits and I can no longer play guitar like I used to. I still play, but I just play chords and easy stuff. Right now, I am exercising and trying to get my strength in hands back again.
@TheOneAndOnlyTauhid Thanks, man. I'm glad that this will help you! Watching this today, I feel like I play it different now. Only because there were certain rhythmic nuances I was still trying to get used to but I wanted to make the video already. From learning the song to recording this vid, I would say about 2 months.
@TheFith Thanks for the reply! Hopefully I can snag this down in a month but upon looking at some of the tab and trying to distinguish guitar parts...I can see why it probably take longer than that haha. Cheers to accomplishing this song.
I know it's pointless to comment on the dislikes, but does anyone else fine it a little irritating that there's just that one dislike, tarnishing an otherwise perfect bar. Maybe it's just me...
Also, brilliant cover man, Gives me the same shiver as the original.
wow dude. that blew me away. like with an effect similar to the actual song. not a feat easily accomplished. you got some serious talent in those fingers
I did practice this song quite a bit before I did this video so although it was a fairly easy song to play (on paper that is, lol) the execution was a whole different story! I wanted to make sure I could do it justice because it's just the rhythm parts without the solo.
The effects sounded badass on the verses/choruses...but the intro should've been totally clean. That's my only nitpick. It's a tough song to play I think. So mad props dude. You did a fine job!
@amanualdexterity18 Thanks, man! It does sound like it's got some effect, but the intro was completely clean. I picked the cleanest setting available through my Toneport...it might be because I played it with the electric. :-)
I intend on redoing this whole thing with the proper setups and all the parts so keep an eye out! Thanks, again and Happy Holidays!
@cRazyBassBiTch Thank you! :-) Ha ha, how funny is that? I answered a question exactly how you asked it. LOL! In any case, I said:
"On a scale of 1 to 10, I would say the rhythm part I play here is a 4. Considering how amazing Mastodon is at crafting a complex songs, they prove that even simple songs can sound very complex. I highly recommend learning it. "
After reading your comment, I though to myself about that whole complexity thing, and I realized how impressed I've always been with The Last Baron and how intricate and complex the composition is. After learning it I discovered how simple it was, and how beautiful it still sounded!
I was just wondering if you've learned that song as well...
@XxSameerxX Thank you! I've still yet to buy the Crack the Skye book, but I listen to that album almost everyday so I'm memorizing all the parts of the songs in my head before I finally get them under my fingers, lol. You should upload a video playing it!
Funny story: I actually learned of Mastodon when they appeared on the old Conan O'Brien show way back in 2007. I thought "this is the heaviest band I've ever seen on this show!" Bought Blood Mountain the very next day. Long live Mastadon! \m/
@legsAirsoft Thanks! I do the same thing with the original. :-) When I listen to it, I hear and learn something new. The way they layered all the different sounds is pretty incredible. I'd really like to do another cover soon - but I'm still working on that solo! LoL!
@TheFith No problem. Almost every time i listen to this song, which is often, i pick up something new. Mastodon has a lot of talent. Keep working on the solo.
Damn dude, kudos for attempting to play a Mastodon song, and kudos for playing it wonderfully. Love this song, even when someone covers it, its amazing. Can't wait to play it perfectly :)
@Shaggoth4 Thanks, man! This song really stood out to me the first time I listened to the whole album. When you put it next to the other songs on Blood Mountain, I love how it's so chill and so melodic. It's like the perfect icing on the cake. :-)
@king6595 Hey there, King6595! I can't remember if I relied to your comment, but if you'd like to have the tabs for this, I have it! It's straight out of the Official tab book, but I put it into a "Guitar Pro" Type of program called TuxGuitar (which is FREE!). Let me know! Take care.
@Zapzapkid Thank you, man! I really love the intro. I still play this song whenever I pick up my guitar, which is pretty much everyday XD...so simple and extremely satisfying to play.
@Zapzapkid Oh, it's cool. I actually started playing it with my fingers at first. Then I saw "Mastodon - Making of Blood Mountain 10" here on YouTube and realized Brent plays this song with a "chicken-picking" style (a pick and with fingers) and I thought I should learn it the way he plays it. :-)
@Metaalhoofdje123 Turn that frown, upside down! XD Somebody once told me that for whatever you do in life, you get what you put into it. I believe that if you put your heart into it, there is no possible way that you can go wrong. Good luck with your playing! And let me know when you get that Bass part down. I'd be happy to see it!
Hey man, are you playing a 4 string or a 5 string? I've been wanting to play this on bass as well but i'm not as skilled and I can't figure out how to drop it an octave to play on a 4 string, if there is a way at all
i'm playing a 4 string with DADG tuning (drop-D) for this song. its quite possible that way.
i haven't practiced for a while cause ive been on vacation but when i can play the entire thing i'll upload it on youtube so you can see how i did it ^^
@cllsom29945 Not at all, but I practiced the song a lot before I did this video. :-) The only thing that's really difficult about the song is the solo.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I would say the rhythm part I play here is a 4. Considering how amazing Mastodon is at crafting a complex songs, they prove that even simple songs can sound very complex. I highly recommend learning it. :-)
@TheFith thanks man... =] mastodon has always been a really big influence of mine. But i have never really played metal music... Ive mostly played power chords with stuff like nirvana, so im not use to this type of music. lol its a lottttt more complex than nirvana. but thank you and great cover =] its one of my favorite songs by them
Don't worry about all the crazy stuff, lol. I too, started with Nirvana (whom I LOVE) almost 15 years ago! The thing I really focus on when I learn stuff like this or any song, really, is that I see it all the way through. From start to finish. It's VERY important to be able to play the whole song.
It will improve your guitar playing in every way, I promise! Every note is important so don't cheat yourself. ;-)
@runsk88 This guitar is a BC Rich KKV that I repainted. I also switched out the original pickups with a Seymour Duncan Jazz SH-2 on the neck side and a Dimebucker on the bridge. It's on my wall in my channel. :-)
As for the sound, it was a little bit of tinkering with the Toneport UX2 that goes into my computer via USB 2.0. The interface has a bunch of different virtual pedals; Delays, Distortions, etc. I just tried out the ones I liked best.
Yeah Jesus Christ dude dont call yourself average after this amazing cover. Ive been tryin to get this song done with a crappy epiphone and a Marshall stack and its a fun as hell to play. What kind of set up do you play on? It sounds bitchin. I like the reverbish delay.
lol, it was more in regards to the lead guitar part of the song. I understand how some might be a little disappointed that the solo is missing, but really the solo is crazy difficult! The timing and technical aspects of it are just beyond my current skill at the moment.
So,yeah, I'm not down on my playing or anything, it's just a reference to the difficulty level of the song. :-)
The setup I used for this is the TonePort UX2 plugged into my computer via USB 2.0.
It's a really great interface that I bought for $140(?). A steal in my opinion because it has EVERYTHING you could ever ask for. A metronome, a tuner, 100+ presets for voice, guitar, and bass. The best part is you can access Toneport's website that has digital amps like your favorite heroes. Sound like Randy Rhoads with a click of a button!
what? an average guitar player?! That's what you're not! That was bigger than awesome, man. Now I'd consider you the guitar hero of mine..that was huge, enormous I could even hear Josh Homme speaking to you man,Great job.man
That's excellent! For some reason, I kinda thought it was Omar from Mars Volta you were talking about. But hey, I learned something new. That is too cool. :-D
man.. spot on rhythm peice.. and i dont blame you for not attempting the lead omar is a fantastic guitar player.. it was a good choice for them to get him to colaberate on this one.. great song great cover if you dont mind me asking what effects did you use for this?
I am using a TonePort UX2 plugged into my computer via USB 2.0. The intro I used the "clean" preset and for the rest of the song, the preset is called "Sounds like Heaven" with just a touch of reverb and delay. :-)

I'm glad that this cover inspired you, it's awesome to hear that. I will check out Intronaut after I post this. I've just sent the tabs with the link (just in case) to open the file. :-)
Nice job man! This is a really cool song, and you play it really well! I've learned the intro but haven't gotten around to the rest of the song yet =/
I am using a TonePort UX2 plugged into my computer via USB 2.0. The intro I used the "clean" preset and for the rest of the song, the preset is called "Sounds like Heaven" with just a touch of reverb and delay. :-)
I am a huge fan of Halcyon1871, a youtube guitar guy (plays amazing Megadeth and Pantera covers!), and got the idea from a video of his setup!
It's an amazing piece of equipment. It sends a pure signal with virtually no lag!
It was difficult to learn (took me 2 months from start to finish) but the payoff is well worth it. I'm just a little bit better at guitar from learning this song. :-)
2 months eh, yeah it deffinetly helps out the guitar playing, and i bet the payoff is great, well im in the process of learning it, but again great vid

amazing. just amazing.
done very, very well for an average player.
you've quite literally inspired me to finally learn this song, so thanks.
as always, Mastodon is the best.
also try Intronaut... they're insane.
Mastodon's still the best though.

Wow, thank you! You're very kind. :-)
I'm glad that this cover inspired you, it's awesome to hear that. I will check out Intronaut after I post this. I've just sent the tabs with the link (just in case) to open the file. :-)
Take Care!

Thanks, man! Agree, Mastodon songs epitomize everything I love about guitar music and playing guitar, at the same time. :-)

Nice job man! This is a really cool song, and you play it really well! I've learned the intro but haven't gotten around to the rest of the song yet =/

What rig are you using? It sounds incredible.

Thank you!
I highly recommend this to everyone.

IF ANYONE READING THIS WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE TABS, just PM me your email. :-)
Note: You need to have the program called TuxGuitar (which is FREE online!) to open the file.

Thank you! I plan on revisiting this song again once I can do the solo (but probably not for a minute, lol) and also with bass guitar.
TheFith 2 years ago
lawl, did you strap a camera to your headstock?
also, great cover, i've 100% got the intro down right now, working on the verse (if you can call it a verse)

Yes! With electrical tape. :-) I saw that here on youtube, I thought it looked really cool, lol.
Thanks and good luck!

Dude, one of the best covers ive seen,
i find it such a hard song to play, after watching you im going to try and learn it
slimshady1111 2 years ago
Thanks, man! I appreciate that. :-)
It was difficult to learn (took me 2 months from start to finish) but the payoff is well worth it. I'm just a little bit better at guitar from learning this song. :-)
Good luck with the song and stick with it!
TheFith 2 years ago
2 months eh, yeah it deffinetly helps out the guitar playing, and i bet the payoff is great, well im in the process of learning it, but again great vid
