Hey man , love all your videos. I got an STO about a month ago from a pet store here in Oregon and I love her. When I got her though, she was a lot younger than I expected. Only about 5 weeks. She was, and remains, really skittery. She jumps at any noise, and will very rarely crawl onto my hand. Generally she runs into her tube and hides. Do you have any experience with them growing to be more friendly, or should I expect her to always be like this? Thanks so much!
@rittz14 umm, they should be with their mom for 2 months. At 5 weeks they just barely became unattached to the mom(for almost a month they stay attached to the mom - after that they 'drop' off and start feeding like normal). She is scared because she is not fully developed and should still be with her mom and siblings. It is sad the breeder sold a STO so young, at that age, the shouldn't really even be able to eat for themselves. It has been 2 weeks, how is she doing now?
@earthling1984 She's gotten a little better. She'll crawl onto my hand but only after she's been running around for a while and it's never her first choice. She's still extremely jumpy though. Every little makes her throw her mouth open. She never bites though. She seems to recognize the hand as harmless, but not particularly inviting. I'm not too worried about her now, but I do think being separated so young has attributed to her skittishness.
The spikes on a hedgehog don't really hurt that much... I mean if you have soft feminine hands then maybe but if your a man then let that hand take a stand and pick it up lol, just cup both of your hands together from both sides of the hedgehog and sort of scoop it up. This is the surefire way of safely picking up a hedgehog. Or you could just use gloves.
i have a couple questions would you sell me a hedgehog or an sto and for how much and you where do you live so if you live by me i could come pick them up if u sell them and if i want to buy one alright well thank you
@rrredzzz XD There's an expo going on in Toronto tomorrow! I hope you know- it's also an exotic pet expo, not just reptiles, so you might find one there.
I can't post links of youtube, but try knowyoursto . com and go to the 'choosing and finding' section. I'm fairly sure almost all the Ontario breeders ship within Canada. :3
@shinocicada so you got yours in canada > i live in toronto and i want a pair SOOO BADLY! How much do they usually cost ?>> and are they high maintenence to take care of ?
I breed hedgehogs and mice, I really love watching your STO's and have done some reading on them. I can't find anywhere that sells them though. Any tips?
@Kaylacutie19 they all have names... kind of. Some of them have real names, like Stewie, my parrotlet, Birtha, one of my hedgehogs, etc. But some of them are simply called letters I name the males A,E,I,O.U.Y, and the females the other letters. This makes it easy to keep track of them.
are the hedgehogs more tame now? usually a hedgehog will not bite and will mostly curl into a ball when intimidated or scared, btw they're beutiful hedgehogs
Hi earthling n_n I wish I could hear the sound but I'm on a craptop >< I noticed the bird cage and I keep reading they need a fish tank. Do you have to put a humidifier in the room or something? I'm reading all over hell and creation about these things and still deciding. Oh, also can you recommend a book? These aren't common where I live. Cute video xD
@SuperGeo1234567 The answer to that question is actually a really long and complicated one. Your best bet is to research and then grab a book or two if you're considering getting one. But to warn you they're not the best pets for most people. They're sweet animals but high maintenance and easy to kill -_-
@longanddeadly they are marsupials, they are not rodents like mice and rats. They can live up to 8 years, unlike mice and rats that live about 2 years. They bond much better with humans, and they are more fun to keep because of their large personalities and food choices.
how do u get the possums because i had a baby possum as a pet but i let him go. but i want another one. i went on us freeads and found that there is possums for sale?
@crunkkidd69 i got mine from a breeder in another state and had them shipped to me on an airlines. Some local pet shops will have STO's, but they are pretty hard to find.
how do u get the possums because i had a baby possum as a pet but i let him go. but i want another one. i went on us freeads and found that there is possums for sale?
@earthling1984 oh really? they stay that small? I've never even heard of these animals before so i wasn't sure. I don't think you can get these in england at all! :P
@charzarg yeah, they are amazing little creatures. I am unsure if they are legal in England, but I can tell you they are very hard to find here in America. You won't find them in pet shops, and there are very few breeders. It is almost impossible to find them! So maybe keep a look out(Every once in a while specialty pet shops will have them), or you could try to find a local breeder! I got mine from another state - sent on a comercial airlines like a cat or dog would be shipped!
@earthling1984 well i know that in england there aren't planes going from area because its too small to bother with planes going from place to place here.. I think i could be wrong.. I don't think i'll get one of these. My mum would think it's too much like a rat anyway.. she is so... non animally :P
@xXxBueatyByHaileyxXx yeah, or a towel, anything. Once the hedgehogs are out of the cage, they are usually calmer. This was my first hedgehog encounter. I have become much better and handling them even when angry :)
@LFCjohn1996 As for selling/shipping. I don't think I could ship to the UK from the USA. Not 100% sure, but I don't think so... Currently I am not shipping them, but maybe in the future :( I hope you can find one or the other! They are great pets!
@LFCjohn1996 STO's are usually between $75 and $200, just depends where you get them, how old they are, how nice they are, etc. Hedgehogs are also about the same price, usually I see them being sold for $125.

yea, they can be crabby when woken up sometimes. The spikes don't 'hurt' but I agree, sometimes I feel little pricks after holding them where the spikes touched.
Hey Earthling love the videos....Quick question do your Sto's act weird after you handle your hedgehogs, and vice versa? I get my opossum tomorrow and was seeing how it was handling them together?
no, not really, haven't noticed anything yet. I always have lots of 'pet smells' on me, and the room is full of pet smells, so they are probably all used to all the smells in here.
They cost between $100 and $200+ (depending on color variation). I ordered mine from a breeder and had them shipped to me. Sometimes you can find them in pet stores though!
give them squares of flannel material 5x5. Mine used to wrap his tail around the cloth to make their sleeping area. Replace after a week for cleaness.
i currently own 1 female african pygmy hedgehog and she is amazing but a bit on the lazy side but all round a great pet nd if anyone has the time and space and money to get one of thses guys then you shud go ahead and get one before the opportunitie ends.
how big do your short tailed oppossums get to because they just look great. : )
Nice Pets, the cat litter working better? im tempted to get me a mice or two but two of my family members have asthma so im trying to find a good way to use for the smell.
cat litter does help with the smell. I use it sometimes still mainly just for the hedgehogs as they are the stinkiest! As for asthma though, it wouldn't help take allergens out of the air, it just helps soak up pee really. To help for asthma you would want a really good air filter in your pet room and perhaps another in the hallway outside the petroom.
Thanks for your comment :) I have thought about monkeys before, but never got one. I've heard some bad things about them, although, you hear bad things about all animals, I think it more depends how you raise them and how much time you have to give them.
You're exactly right. It is how you raise them, I know many monkey owners who have raised them properly / spent lots of time with them and have the most well behaved/trained monkeys. I also know some monkey owners who purchased one on a whim, and raised them completely the wrong way. A pet monkey should NEVER become aggressive if obedience and dominance is asserted/taught at a young age and when they are raised properly. Monkeys are a big commitment and take dedication but are worth it to me. :)
My monkeys are in no way dangerous to anyone! In their whole five years they have NEVER bitten once. Although they are more of breeders then pets, they are still wonderful and super friendly. We love them, and enjoy watching them play. They are so intelligent and adorable. We are keeping a baby though from their next litter (December 09) to raise as a pet, and maybe a future breeder. Many people believe you can't breed pet monkeys, but it is a myth. The monkey we keep will be bottle fed/diapered
/harness trained. But as long as her parents (Ali & Noah the breeder pair I have now) show her how to rear a litter (as parenting is learned in Cotton Top Tamarins) then their will not be a problem with her being both a pet and a breeder...
I am really excited for the baby to come. I am hoping to post a video about the care of tamarin monkeys soon. I really want people to know that they can make excellent companions, of course when raised properly.
I've been owned by hedgehogs for over 10 years. After you know them, the quills are nothing. Just go to a random little hedgie and pick them up, no problem. They are prickly, but don't really hurt that much. I've always wanted an STO as they seem to be similar in care as the hedgies. Maybe someday...

SparklyStrawberry14 2 years ago
Hey Earthling love the videos....Quick question do your Sto's act weird after you handle your hedgehogs, and vice versa? I get my opossum tomorrow and was seeing how it was handling them together?
thagoods89 2 years ago
no, not really, haven't noticed anything yet. I always have lots of 'pet smells' on me, and the room is full of pet smells, so they are probably all used to all the smells in here.

Are they in a bird cage

where did you get the hedgehogs an how much?
mr91fun1 2 years ago
They cost between $100 and $200+ (depending on color variation). I ordered mine from a breeder and had them shipped to me. Sometimes you can find them in pet stores though!

24Gladiator24 2 years ago
give them squares of flannel material 5x5. Mine used to wrap his tail around the cloth to make their sleeping area. Replace after a week for cleaness.

Nice Pets, the cat litter working better? im tempted to get me a mice or two but two of my family members have asthma so im trying to find a good way to use for the smell.
Xorn5k 2 years ago
cat litter does help with the smell. I use it sometimes still mainly just for the hedgehogs as they are the stinkiest! As for asthma though, it wouldn't help take allergens out of the air, it just helps soak up pee really. To help for asthma you would want a really good air filter in your pet room and perhaps another in the hallway outside the petroom.
earthling1984 2 years ago
ahh okey thanks for the comment, cute hedgehogs btw
Xorn5k 2 years ago
I love your pets, they are so cute
I used to want a hedgehog, but I thought you couldn't really do much with them. They are cute though!
So you can handle them and stuff? thats really neat.
I got monkeys though, because I wanted a really intelligent animal that I could bond to that would live longer than the average pet.
I own and breed 2 cotton top tamarin monkeys...
I have a videos of them on my page.
You are more than welcome to check them out.
If you have any questions, then please ask :)
AshleysExotics 2 years ago
Thanks for your comment :) I have thought about monkeys before, but never got one. I've heard some bad things about them, although, you hear bad things about all animals, I think it more depends how you raise them and how much time you have to give them.
earthling1984 2 years ago
You're exactly right. It is how you raise them, I know many monkey owners who have raised them properly / spent lots of time with them and have the most well behaved/trained monkeys. I also know some monkey owners who purchased one on a whim, and raised them completely the wrong way. A pet monkey should NEVER become aggressive if obedience and dominance is asserted/taught at a young age and when they are raised properly. Monkeys are a big commitment and take dedication but are worth it to me. :)
AshleysExotics 2 years ago
My monkeys are in no way dangerous to anyone! In their whole five years they have NEVER bitten once. Although they are more of breeders then pets, they are still wonderful and super friendly. We love them, and enjoy watching them play. They are so intelligent and adorable. We are keeping a baby though from their next litter (December 09) to raise as a pet, and maybe a future breeder. Many people believe you can't breed pet monkeys, but it is a myth. The monkey we keep will be bottle fed/diapered
AshleysExotics 2 years ago
/harness trained. But as long as her parents (Ali & Noah the breeder pair I have now) show her how to rear a litter (as parenting is learned in Cotton Top Tamarins) then their will not be a problem with her being both a pet and a breeder...
I am really excited for the baby to come. I am hoping to post a video about the care of tamarin monkeys soon. I really want people to know that they can make excellent companions, of course when raised properly.
Thank you for your reply though!
:)

Cool i want some hedgehogs :/

I've been owned by hedgehogs for over 10 years. After you know them, the quills are nothing. Just go to a random little hedgie and pick them up, no problem. They are prickly, but don't really hurt that much. I've always wanted an STO as they seem to be similar in care as the hedgies. Maybe someday...
