'69 Skylark GS was only available with the 400, but there were some really hot over the counter factory kits for that, including Stage 2. The Buick 455 bowed in for 1970. It wasn't even in production for model year'69. The 430 was the big gun in Wildcats and Rivs, but NA in any Skylark/Special.
hi i got a 67 gs 400 here in australia matching numbers car but has had a right hand drive con any ways i was wondering if a 455 block is the same or will bolt in with out having to cut mounts
@chazmt..It is a 69...The only difference between 68 and 69 was the grill, spedometer colour and quarter marker lights...68 and 69 was a transition between 67 and 70 wich I own before...kept the 70 skylark custom hardtop (red) and the 70 GS455 convertible (desert gold irid) as a project.
@ricerhunter9 stage one had slightly ported heads and a taller cam over stock, rated at 360 hp & 510 lbft but some claim it makes over 400ph, the stage II was an over the counter package that I don't think was rated but it had new heads with round exhaust ports and a more aggressive cam probably well over 400hp. The Stage III never made it past a concept, 4 bolt mains, even more aggressive cam, very high compression, they remade one for the blackhawk concept, 463hp & 510 lbft. yum
@thugstylef It depends on many things. You can build an engine for high end power or for low end torque, most go for a compromise between the two. It mostly depends on the cam you use, but the intake and heads are a factor as well. Just keep in mind, a Buick doesn't like to be spun too fast with a stock bottom end. If you swap out the rod bolts the bottom is good for about 550hp and 5500 rpm, any more and you are looking at better rods and a girdle. it is safer to build for low end torque.
@thugstylef A compression building cam is a good choice, something with less overlap and a narrower lobe displacement angle. You can look in to all that stuff and figure out what you want to do! Interesting side note, there was a 67 Buick special funny car made in the late 60's that had a 430 with an 8-71 running nitromethane. Very cool! Look it up!
@NobleLumpkin i actually want to get the big mutha thumpr comp cam with new titanium springs, lifters, Timing set, push rods, seals, and new pipes and mufflers FOR NOW! to at least drive it around. how do you think that will effect the HP and torque?
@NobleLumpkin later on when i have the money im going to completely rebuild it a frame off resto. i want to get edlbrock heads, carb, intake, new tranny, and torque converter, rocker arms, headers, crankshaft, pistons, etc. i think you get the picture anyway how much higher do you think the HP and torque will be after that?
@ricerhunter9 They had higher flow heads, with round exhaust ports a more aggressive camshaft, probably made well over 400hp but I don't believe it was rated because it was an over the counter package. The stage I was rated at 360 but some claim it made closer to 400 or a little more... The stage 3 never really made it past the concept phase, they only made a few, the blocks had 4 bolt mains and the compression was quite high, they remade one for the blackhawk concept, 463 hp. mmmmm
yeah man, the buick 455 is not to be fucked with. The boat guys know its value :) My buick would run circles around any BB chevelle....man i miss that car.
Oh boy, does that sound sweet! You gotta love any Buford (Buick) guy who takes the time to build one up. They were the most underrated vehicle back in the late sixties / very early 70's. I myself have a '71 GranSport Stage 1. It's a 4 spd, to boot! Prev. owner put a rod thru block, so I'll build up a new one the way I want to. Tell me, are there any of the old Stage 2 heads for sale ever? I doubt it. Perhaps I'll buy aftermarket heads. Can't wait to get started on it! It's the fire red, btw.
Not sure where the term "Buford" originated, but it's simply a "term of endearment" or a loving "slang" that Buick guys....the really hard-core Buick guys...have called their Buicks for decades. Younger ones won't know it, but throw that term out to an older Buick street rodder, drag racer or restorer....say aged 50 plus...and you'll get knowing looks of approval. It wasn't a regional term either. Could be one of the Buick founders was named Buford. But that term is still very much alive.
I've heard they made a Stage3 version, 4 bolt block and over 12.0:1 comp but i dunno the specs, it got to be the baddest(bad=as a really great car)Buick muscle engine ever.
im in love with this body style, had 1 in high school....350 of course. closest i could find to replace it with was a 70 chevelle ss 396. amazing what we will settle for.
I had a '69 convertible until June 2008.Same outfit, same colour but definitely not the same engine.I can't just imagine what would of happened to the frame once launched with an engine like that....Snap,crack and POW...
I don't get Suzuki's comment. How is this "hacked up" and worth next to nothing? It looks pretty original to me except the power plant which is an authentic Buick 455 anyway. Yeah he has the passenger and rear seats out but I 'm not sure it's full on tubbed so they may be able to be put back in any time in a few minutes. Looks good to me. I'm thinkin about doin roughly the same thing but with a roots blower on top.
but wheres a 630+ci Big Block Buick?? see chevy is easy to make HUGE power thats why everyone loves them(including me)why do you think you put a chevy in an old 30's coupe? TO GO FAST!! I do have respect for Stage 1 buicks though, they kick so much ass its crazy GOD DAMN nothing better then anything under the GM name.........except pontiac
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
hey what did you say about chevy??? watch it theres a bowtie tattooed on my heart. i know the buicks are bitchin thats why i love all GM but i have to say chevy is better
Hey man, Buick engines are built with a higher nickel content, tougher metal with thin wall castings, If you put aluminum heads on 455 Buick it will way 60lbs less than a stock small block Chevy. They are inherently more efficient and make incredible torque, I could go on... The biggest reason Chevy's are so popular is because they are cheap to buy and cheap to build because there are so many of them. And when someone puts a Chevy mill in a car like this, I want to throw a torque wrench at them.
I like buick v8s but the bottom ends are to weak. The mains have to girdled for anything over 500hp. The main ard rod journals are incredibly big which equals alot of recipricating mass. The buick isn't perfect and as far as the basic platform small chevies are the best. Vortec 350 with a cam swap make 400 easy hp. A small nos and 500 is no problem.Ur right they are light with alum heads but that's $2k for the haeds alone.
true the chevies are the esiest to built up, that's one of the reasons you see 10 of them for every other engine at a car show. Quite frankly, I'm sick of them I don't pay any attention to them anymore. And if you want a 450 - 500 hp street machine, the Buick is still pretty easy and it will give you a big broad torque curve that will put many other engines in their place, peak hp isint everything... And they are not chevies!! I am so sick of chevies!!!
Back in the '70s I ran a1970 SS Chevelle. It was no big deal when I beat a Camaro or Mustang but when my buddies Buick GS 455 (minus all badges) kicked someones ass people were really shocked! No one expected that big Buick to launch the way it did! It ran low 11s with street tires and mufflers. Come to think of it, we lied to everyone and told 'em it was a Buick 350 motor. That really spun up the Camaro guys. LOL! Thanks for the memories!
I just wish that myself and my buddies realized what we had back then. Those cars were our every day drivers, but if you took a half dozen of those same cars nowadays and parked them somewhere, people would think its a car show.
@jakespop56 Wow..that took me back..I remember in HS in ahem..1971..I had a 66 GTO..black..my best friend had a yellow 65 GTO convertible we were sitting in the DQ and there was a 67 Camaro..a 66 Chevelle a 65 Buick GS and a 57 Chevy....they were just our go to school cars.. Not a single one of them cost over a grand to buy at that time. Every now and then when I drive by that DQ I realize just how cool that was...siigh
But don't get me wrong, Ill take a chevy over and new 4 banger piece of shit any day, and if your working on and using an old car, I love you for doing your part to keep this hobby and passion alive. There are allot of reasons Buicks are my fav, but stuff like that shouldn't divide car guys, we have to watch out for the tree hugging pussies who want our cars off the road!!
exactly until recent times, more after market speed parts are becoming available for Buicks, They were a forced to be reckoned with then imagine now with all the speed goodies!
@NobleLumpkin Exactly! Buicks are one of the most expensive GM's to build (with the exception of Cadillacs - but who races Cadillacs?), but they'll blow every other divisions engine out of the water.
@firehawk400 nice ,but wont blow a big block chevy out of the water you are dead wrong! The buicks are very torquey but do not have the top end power of an ls7 or even ls6 chevy.
