Black metal has sort of adopted that quality of being raw and less "perfect" because that's what its fans most like to hear. It's just something about it that makes it sound attractive. It really doesn't work for many other genres though.

But BM band actually prefer this obnoxious and TERRIBLE sound over a legit quality recording... I will never understand why it would be so wrong to give BM a good recording. If you see their new video, it's just warped beyond what they used to play. It's lost a lot of its old qualities. And that's why people hate Dimmu now.
As for the rawness, some people just like it. It is sort of an idea of imperfection. Man constantly tries to be perfect. This more resembles nature in its chaos.
@MedievalAmbient I think they are still pretty heavy, but they seem to have gone a more melodic rout. I'm not a Dimmu fan, but they just seem like a band that over time evolved into something a little more audible. Some people actually reach a certain age and for some reason they feel the need to calm it down. Others don't. Can't be sure if it was for the money. Either way, good points made. I guess its just not my cup of tea. It dont have to be top dollar recording, but audible at least.
