About 220 miles south-southwest of here is Villisca, Iowa, location of another famous tragedy, the Villisca axe murders of 1912. Watch "Ghost Adventures" or any of those paranormal investigation shows and you're bound to come across an episode about it. Now I wonder if anyone has investigated this cornfield to see if the ghosts of the rock stars and pilot are hanging around.
can't the farmer take out ONE acre from the field and make it in a rock and roll park in Buddy's honor. He can charge admission to pay for what he is losing in crops. It would be a heck of a memoria and place of joy and get together for Buddy's fans--and that would be what he would want I think
Can you imagine the damage done to the three having been thrown THROUGH the fuselage? I read the autopsy reports on all four. (they're on line) It wasn't nothin' nice. They didn't suffer, they were all dead on impact.
The three who were thrown from the plane actually tore through their seat belts because of the force of the crash. I read the Buddy Holley story book. It left questions unanswered. It seems to me the new type of navigational unit that was used by Peterson, the pilot, was the main reason for the mishap as Peterson was unfamiliar with it. It was strange how it all came together, with the snow that night, to the tragic results. The biggest question: Why wasn't Peterson better trained with it?
Thanks for this video! I made the same visit in 1999 while driving an 18 wheeler. There were no crops at the time. According to the Surf Ballroom manager the marker was placed in that field in about 1987.
They sure didn't get very far from Mason City airport! I never read the determined cause, but being a pilot myself, I'm guessing ice build-up on the wing leading edges and prop, maybe carburetor ice, too, as they took off into a snow storm? Planes don't fly (lose lift) with very small accumulations of ice that destroy the wing air-foil shape.
Carb ice restricts airflow thru venturi. Either can bring a plane down quickly.
Thanks for the coordinates. Google Earth has a little 'W' there you click on to get a Wikipedia explanation. Just a big corn field on Google. Some wispy clouds near the site.
Looks like you go North on I-35 from Mason City/Clearlake, exit West on 300th street, turn right on Fir Avenue (about 1 mile), go North about half way between 310th and 320th (2nd house on left after 310th). Stop, hike straight east down the fenceline. Prob should ask permission.
