Different audio formats are used depending on resolution to reduce the amount to be streamed. I think it's MP3 on lower resolutions then AAC on higher.

@ChessPieceRook I think I might be able to explain. On the Sonic & Knuckles cardtridge, there was a slot on the top that would let you insert Sonic 3 and Sonic 2. If you put in Sonic 2, you would get a game called Knuckles the Echinda in Sonic 2. I think they put in the option in the HD version so some players wouldn't be disappointed.

This is what happens when "polished" production tampers with something that was already perfect in its original form. Although to give this consideration, I'd say it sound cool for the most part. The one most audible flaw here is the rhythm "chords" at 0:40, the treble harmonies should have been singled out to be louder and less grainy, maybe panning the lows a bit. While I'm at it, those awkward little clips at 0:32 and 0:39 could have benefited from a good pitch-wheel treatment on the synth.
