An incredible writer, John Irving is, indeed. As good as several of the movies based on his books have been (Cider House Rules, Simon Birch (A Prayer for Owen Meany), The World Acording to Garp, etc., they pale in comparison to the books, themselves...
Greatest author ever. No question about it. 1) The World According to Garp 2) Until I Find You 3) Widow for One Year 4) Cider House Rules (All of these four these are minimally seperated) 5) Son of the Circus 6) Prayer for Owen meany 7) Twisted River 8) Hotel New Hampshere 9) Water Method Man 10) The one with bears in the title; total brain fart
John Irving is an amazing author. I look up to him immensly. Last Night in Twisted River is absolutely fantastic, as is A Prayer for Owen Meany and Until I Find You and all his other books for that matter. Reading his novels have made me a better person and I agree more than ever with the Quote from The Nation, "Irving is arguably the American Balzac". Reading Irving's novels has provided me a great deal of pleasure.

John Irving is the most amazing author in the world. I look up to him immensly. The World According to Garp is just absolutely fantastic, and so is A Prayer for Owen Meany and all his other books for that matter. Reading his novels have made me want to be an author more than ever.
And by the way...Just a thought -- "navelpicker" ?? What is up with the dumb as hell name? I mean, it's hard to take you seriously with a screen name as stupid as that.
And just because he happens to know his war history does not mean his OPINION of what happened and its VAULE is infallible. When it comes to his, as he calls them, his "former fellow Americans", his tone is absolutely bleeding with condescension; an arrogance that I believe he has absolutely no right to whatsoever.
if you really hate him so much, then why do you READ HIS WRITING the WHINE about like a four year old who bought a crappy toy with their pocket money? suck it up, if you such a political genius, write a book about it, and when people whine about how stupid and igorant you are then maybe you'll realize how incredibly STUPID you really ARE.
You? Know absolutely nothing about me, except the opinion I have presented here. I did not choose to read A Prayer for Owen Meany, I had to read it the summer before my Advanced Placement English Literature class; as to whether or not that means anything to you concerning 'intelligence' I'll let you decide.
i reead a prayer for owen meany by choice, but in my opinion, it wasn't his best work, and i read it about two years agao, so i hardly remember it. and just because your in an advaced class doesn't make you intelligent, for example, there are morns in my algebra class, and we're taking it a year early because of advaced test scores and good grades, intelligene really has very little to do with class placement.
Oh, you're...in Algebra? You must be very young, then. No wonder your argument is so under-developed and your attitude so very immature. I excuse you from all your ignorant assumptions, then, on account of your young age. :]
No, no, I don't think you understand. Advanced Placement are college level courses, they're a bit more complex and difficult than your 'honors algebra' class or whatever you're in, no offense, of course.
obviously, i'm still a feshman in highschool. and all though some of the classes we take are fun, especially the history classes, thye're generally mind numbingly simple, particularly algebra. and how did you get in an advanced placement test good test scores and very good writing skills. (though i still think you're an idiot, and don't understand any of the real meanings in John Irvings books, you do articulate your thoughts well)
One of the only reasons I dislike Canada so much is because all of the writers I have read from Canada (or ex patriates who claim to be Canadian *cough*John Iriving*cough*) such as Irving and Margaret Atwood (both -shock- from Toronto) have consistently negatively portrayed America through their novels. And of course his comments were political - it was the god damn Vietnam war, for Christ's sake, and do I even need to list all the "Reagan's a fucking idiot" quotes from that book?
okay, now onto your hipocritical anti-canada shit, you realize having several 'anti american' comments in a story, ABOUT A WAR, is not a justification to hate the country that the author resides in. and by the way, it wasn't CANADA that stole the credit for liberating the concentration camps from RUSSIA, Russia joined the war early and worked way harder to defeat the NAZIS. oh and ironically enough, i'm writing this from GERMANY, not canada or your precious America.
Anti American? Excuse me? Just because one criticizes an American president, such as Reagan, does not make ME anti-American. What is important is that you do it tastefully. Irving did not do it with any tact or taste at all. He was blunt, rude, and frankly? Out of line for an ex patriate to pass judgement on his ex country. And, I wasn't arguing about Russia at all; certaintly they fought very hard against the Nazis. But it wasn't enough. Which is why the United States stepped in.
the credit for liberating Auschwitz for example, didn't go to the Russians who were there fighting harder, and from the beginning, no it went to the americans who happened to show up just when it was almost won anyway. they really didn't do much, and though i mean no disrespect to the american soldiers that died,
Not that I loved Reagan myself, but I'm really sick of foreign authors who really have no right to trying to constantly demonize America. And why do they do this? Number one, it's easy. Number two, people in Europe love to buy and read it because hating on Americans is one of their and Canada's favorite pastimes -- so they sell more of the mook and get more money. Yay for them. So next time, when there happens to be a world war, maybe we won't save all of your asses from the chopping block.
your still stupid. still ignoratn. and you still have a really shitty arguement, you keep rephrasing the same thing over and over, you FAIL. and i'm still waiting on that prize winning novel.
Wow. I'm stupid? I'm ignorant? Says the idiot who can't even spell or phrase his / her sentences in a way that's gramatically correct. Hm. I rest my case...
I absolutely hate him. His "A Prayer for Owen Meany" was BEYOND anti-American, and he made his negative, condescending sentiments in regards to its people, history, and government quite clear, with no trace of euphemism nor a sense of tact. He seems to be dwelliong under the dimwitted illusion that # 1, Americans don't know their own history, that they are woefully ignorant of their own political situation, and that if they even have opinions it doesn't matter because they're so dumb anyways.
So you read "Owen Meany". Congrats. Good story, right? Damn near straight poetry in prose form, right? Here's a little thing for you to ponder, Sayomi: A first-person account of anything in prose form is not necessarily depictant of the author's own views. Get that? And even if; what would be so hard for you to swallow when a person, having a contrary view on a war very much loathed by the American public, speaks his mind about it?
What's so anti-American about his writing? Oh, I don't know, possibly his actual quotes? For example: "Americans are idiots ...Americans are ridiculous..."
And no, I don't think it was "damn near straight poetry in prose form" - I've seen better writing - John Steinbeck could CRAP a better book than Irving could. And I'm not saying that Irving is anti-American for having a contrary view of the government - like you said, such doubts is American in essence, what is anti-American is how..[cont.]
...scathingly RUDE he is and how bitter he is about Americans, as if we did him some great wrong. And by the way, he wrote that leaving America to go to Canada [of all places] was some "powerful political statement". How is running away from one's country at such a pivotal hour making any sort of statement? The only statement Irving asserts is that he was too mjuch of a coward to stay in the U.S. and fight it out - to face the issues. Hester, arrested in Chicago, protesting on behalf of..[cont]
justice in America made more of a statement than he ever did. Hester actually had the courage to rough out the poli swell to fight for something she was passionate about - social justice. When Medgar Evers was shot in 1963 in Mississippi - did Dr. MLK go to Canada, esp. after he received all those death threats? NO! All Irving has passion for was the right to flee with his tail between his legs. I could call him a number of things: turncoat, deserter. But he's really not even worth it.
and last CANADA is FUCKING awsome, atleast our environment is...existant. so go drown in hiigh fructose corn syrup instead of sweet maple syrup of canda BITCH. i think that's all i felt like saying.
get off your asses and remove your swiftly melting brian from the TV and read a book that makes you think. wouold you rather everything was dumbed down, and simple, so as not to offend anyone, but oh god forbid! then you would probably accuse John Irving of insulting your frail intelligence. and just out of curriosity, how many nationally best selling novels have YOU written?
you are an imbecile. the fact that there is anti ameriacan statements in his stories is good for over patriotic idiots like you, if you have issues with his writing, then you should go fuck yourself and quit whining about how much you dislike him. also, he is not entirely anti american, most of his stories TAKE PLACE IN AMERICA! and you should realize that he is not a political writer, while his books are deeply serious they are NOVELS they are meant to be read for recreation, so idiots like you
And beyond the style of the book you seem to use as your pointing stick against this man, what exactly IS anti-American about having a contrary view to your government?
To put it down to basics: Is there any more pure American notion than the actual dissent towards the governing body of you/yourself/your property?
Anything opposed to that notion could/should? be considered nothing more than a version of Fascism.
sorry i have to say it, but the only thing sayomi sama is right about is your screen name, you are obviously intelegent, so why demean yourself in a way that makes others laugh at you? (though i suppose i don't have much room to talk)
you are such an ass hole, none of that was there, you're just trying to make him look bad because you know it's all true, do you see trailor parks, wellfare fat ass idiots (i am not calling all people on well fare this only the ones to lazy to even TRY to get a job) and shitty public schools anywhere but america? NO YOU IGNORAMUS PUSS SPEWING IMBECILE. have a nice day >=)
there is so much crap fiction published out there...i appreciate irving more and more with every book i read. i wish he pumped 'em out like stephen king, but i guess that would take away from his body of works.
I like that John Irving is thoughtful. Not kind, but thoughtful, in the essence of the word.
