I know someone who built a diesel truck repair shop out of these. He has 4 of them stacked two high about 30 feet apart with a back wall and a roof over the space in between and has spiral staircases installed in the storage units to get from one floor to the other and doors cut in the walls to access the repair bay in between.
Any tips for buying and renovating one of these? i want to buy one and put it on some land, or friend/family land and live in it for the rest of my life. Please give me any advice or tips that you can.
I saw an episode on Discovery channel where they combined three 20 footers. They tried 3 different types of insulation, and the cheapest seemed as good as the more expensive. Their special camera tests showed that most of the heat loss was from the floor, which most people overlook. Something to consider.
Nice job, I have been doing this work for 27yrs now and there are some great materials you can use, DO YOUR HOMEWORK IT CAN SAVE YOU $, ask resalers of shipping containers , we do it for a living. So ask around lots of companies selling containers , we are doing lots for mining, office , shipping, project containers . Its free to ask . But ask the right ones . Cheers and good luck.
@TruthSmack Personally, I can't see any harm in living in a metal box, provided it is well grounded (for electricity) and well ventilated (so you don't die of C0 poisoning when you're running your LPG stove). Most developed countries have surpluses of shipping containers thanks to their trade deficits with China (ie, they import more than they export) so you can usually pick one up quite cheaply.
@meraiahf You’re inside a metal box, your grounded. Vents are a hole away. This is a great idea. Just have to get it built b4 the housing industry finds out and makes it illegal. Imagine $15,000 and your up with electricity, h2o, heat. All off the grid, and moving is just packing your house on a flatbed or two. Expansion is just like playing with Lego building bricks,
We used 2X4s affixed to the walls and ceiling with a liquid adhesive called Toolbox. We then insulated the containers with 50mm extruded foam and covered with 4mm ply. Almost four years on and everything still works great. Total cost for the two, materials and delivery included, was about A$10,000 -- that's Aussie dollars -- but you could get older containers for less.
I have seen many ways in which the walls, ceiling, interior were done. From simple glue. To a wall supported ceiling and loose floor. (steel 2x4 wall studs, steel 2x6 ceiling studs and wood 2x4 for the flooring. All was just screwed together, no big deal and had max insulation within. A window a/c cooled everything down in a hurry. In winter you really didn't need much more than the window ac/heat unit and for fun a small wood heater. Three containers on stilts 100% done for around $16,000
for what it's worth, ports will let these containers go for a thousand bucks or so. some will actually give them away. this is the draw. plus they're built of cor-ten steel which is very tough

I am quite sure I would have most of the world agree with me if I said, "PRE-FABRICATED HOMES WOULD BE MUCH MORE OF INTEREST TO THE PUBLIC IF COMPANIES WOULD PUBLISH THEIR PRICES AND MADE IT MUCH MORE ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC AS WELL. WE ARE TIRED OF THE "FILL IN THE BOXES WITH YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION AND WE WILL GIVE YOU A CALL BACK ALONG WITH JUNKMAIL AND THEN SELL YOUR NAME TO SALES LIST COMPANY"...
fuck yeah! i know that the 3 container quikhouse is 120,000 and you still have to put it together yourself ikea style! when i make mine im just going to call the shipping yard in new jersey and set up my own deal. then do the finishing touches myself. i'd bring some kids from the tech school to do the plumbing and lighting. if i had a bunch of trees on my property i'd just buy a chainsaw and make a log cabin. then i would eat pancakes every morning with real maple syrup.
.......would you tap your own tree for the maple syrup or will order a tree from canada to spike your own maple?
I prefer to cure a beehive myself and manufacture my own honey. Come to think of it , ever since I showed them THE BEE MOVIE they have kind of gotten chintzy on the honey.
@cucumber202 It depends on the condition you can get them used for as low as a thousand flat (I would spend more like 1500 and make sure I get one in good condition).
@Seyahhsod Amen - I am in the market RIGHT NOW and can't find any published prices - might have to hire a GC to do it. One company - emailed them twice and called once, was told sales guy just left office, will call me back in a couple hours - REALLY ??
Good luck with that - You'd likely be better off pouring a concrete wall, as the container is going to need alot of waterprooffing. Or just take the 1960's approach - bury a school bus... WOW, somethings don't change much!

@meraiahf you have to "ground" the shipping containers? How is this done? Sorry if I have a few questions.

@meraiahf i think it is a great idea and probably low maintenance

How do you put a wall in those? Studs, how do you affix them to steel...
Vamp1963 2 years ago
@Vamp1963
You probably could use wooden 2x4 to do the framing. Once the framing is done you can do wiring, plumbing and then dry wall over it.

WOW! I'm really impress meraiahf!
I never thought there is such a thing as an adhesive to hold 2x4s. Thats a terrific ideal!
Four years huh?! Nice to know it holds togetehr well and at a terrific cost.
Jenfucius 2 years ago
@meraiahf how much of that "Toolbox" adhesive did you apply per 2 x 4 beam? Is it still strong?
