  • seriuously, what's with all those dislikes on each and every rendition of the memphis stomp on youtube??? i can't figure it out

  • @V1roN someone's been thumbing down all my videos repeatedly lately. they were in good shape for 4 years until the past 2 weeks or so. idk why!

  • wow, sounds good!

  • i agree that the soundtrack of that film is amazing...it's like a character in the movie it wouldn't be the same without it...i love your rendition! very good!!:-)

  • YUP! You have the prize for best rendition I've seen here... I saw Grusin a month ago in NYC and he did this for his finale as a solo. Man on man...

I'm not ready to attempt this one, but I'm bookmarking you for inspiration! KUDOS!!

  • I thought this was a great rendition but all the notes are at the same accent level, which messes up the song.

  • good ! not perfect but very good, I think you are one of the best of youtube on memphis stomp, notably for the funky side, you have the good strenght and lenght of the chords

  • Wow!

  • Je donnerais ma gibson les paul pour pouvoir jouer ainsi ! Bravo !

  • I am just 13 and i started with this song a half year ago and i can play a part of it

  • @AnIdiot2

And your parents must be really proud of you <.<

  • WOW

  • muito bom!!

  • I think I watched every single rendition of this piece on youtube, and by far I like yours the most. I am getting back into piano playing and hope to learn this. Very inspiring!

  • mostly the ones that are killing me are the quintuplet and hextuplet runs in the song g# c'# d'#, g'# c"# d"# etc... the rest is relatively easy for me to get the pattern since usually something's happening each eighth note...

I practice it slow and straight... add the swing later

  • Thank you very much, well done. Good job man!

  • NICE!!! Very handy tool to be able to play this :D It's got such soul hasn't it?

  • Very nice. Nice grooove. Jam on brother!!!

  • Great job playing man. You nailed the groove of this piece which I sometimes struggle to do.

Its weird how different people struggle with different bits cause the end rubato bit I find easy

  • Nice going! This is a tough tune. It's really easy to rush and you avoided that greatly. Sacrifice some speed for more accuracy in the notes and let the tune have a groove. Maybe slow it to 190-200bpm. Got a little too "swingy/triplet-y", especially in the d minor section and the low groove in the middle. Even it out a bit more.

Then get a grand piano! It'll sound sooo much better on a grand than an upright, even though your upright is nice. Again, great job!

  • thanks for the advice, constructive criticism is good. i agree with the swing comment listening back on it now, esp compared to grusin's performance. that's criticism i've got in the past too on this vid, so whenever i try to play it now, i try to straighten out the swing a bit more now... and as for the grand piano haha, i'm at an all-steinway college now which is GREAT, which means i need to record & upload more vids haha

  • OMG! You're great! :)

  • AWESOME; YOURE GREAT

  • This is Fabbb

mann i am learnin this song and u make

    it sound freakin awesome!!

    lol

  • Amazing!

  • me podrias pasar la partitura porfavor

  • freakin awesome - you just inspired me to learn this.

  • i think you play tooo much staccato ;)

but that's a question of what you like ;)

  • Could have been better IMHO. You got the melody right but the timing seemed to be a bit off.

  • kooliessss!!

  • FAB! I'm with u on the movie...I'm still looking for the soundtrack! You got the feel down...+ most of the notes! WEL DONE

  • Not bad, mate. But I'd suggest once you get this down, try to inject a bit of feeling and vary the expressions a bit. At a moment there isn't much variation in mood or expression.

In particular, the part that begins at 1:37, I'd suggest holding the bass a bit longer. If you have the original recording you'll know what I mean. To me, that's always been the pay off part.

  • "U fucked this one right up and i thought i'd jst tell you that i could kick your ass i might even make a video jst to proove it. this is jst......shit. "

WHY DON'T YOU? Put up or shut up.

  • awesome song i learned in music class at school lol!

  • this uptempo swing is a really 'killer' in playing piano. I like your rendition! Uli, :)

  • is true i play the drums...

are very difficult .. but is eas to learn

    :)

  • Awesome playing man, way to jam.

  • i am a quite good pianist and i learn all my stuff by ear but this i just cant seem to get the knack of!can u mail me tge music or even any tips?wud b soooo greatful!

    aine from ireland

  • lol i'm learning this song. and im 13! lol im not joking. my teacher told me to search it on utube so yeah. im upto page 7 (only 3 more pages!!!! =D)

  • You're 13... So what ??

  • wow I'm 13 too I played this song 2 years ago ^^ I'm not joking ^^

  • awesome! wow, i tried learning this 10 years ago and gave up. it's nice to know that it can be done. you've inspired me to try again.

  • awesome playing!!

  • i like it, check mine out . .

  • definitely a good performance!

the key to really nailing this piece, though, is the type of swing feel it is. you got a copy of the recording? if you listen to grusin carefully, rather than that traditional swung quaver feel, he plays it in that dixieland-ish, new orleans blues style, where its almost straight. the D minor bit for example sounds completely even.

so try playing it like that, & throw in more syncopated accents to make it seem like you really dig this groove.

    keep it up :D

  • you post a better one then...

  • dude, he's offering constructive critism and it is very to the point and correct. He's not sayin he can play it better, he's just expressing an opinion. Relax.

  • Awesome bro !

  • Not bad, but you need to have some more fun with it. You sound too mechanical- try adding some pedal and giving it some more welly!

  • I disagree about the pedal, if you listen to the recording, it's very dry. This stomp style doesn't need pedal.

  • pedal would ruin it

  • exactly

  • na i love playing this piece and i find the pedal really helps on the tremelando and other bits (im hoping to post my own vid soon)

  • Yes I can see how this one would be a tough one, but you handled it extremely well. Excellent work as always...

  • how come you play it like a pro? an you send me the music sheet, i'd like to play it before i die...

  • Great playing love it. Great musical colouring! Keep up the good work

  • this is quite good.

  • nice one man, difficult tune..!

  • what time in the video is too lagato? cause i want to see exactly where you're saying. thanks for the feedback everyone!

  • can you scan and email me the sheetmusic?? my friend wants to play this song i learnt it years back

  • wow, great effort, buggered up the intro a lil but, but my god the rest of it was fantastic. top job

  • Great Movie and Great Soundtrack. One thing great about The Firm was the piano music throughout the story and the suspense scenes. Does anyone have the whole movie and can anyone post it?

  • Awesome!!

Do you maybe have the sheet music of this tune?

    Thanks for posting.

  • this is amazing! have no words

    can i have the chord?

  • Great film, Great Soundtrack, Great Piano Playing, 5 stars from me pal lol
