  • HE is a son of 2 nations !

He was saying: Azerbaijan is my father and Russia is my mother.

  • why did you ask me? Think harder, small-minded Rae56789

  • Geat video!!! Bariton is super !!!!

  • Why emphasize religion in this subject. Right there, thats what separates art from everything. Come on guy stop it NOW!!!!!!!!!!

  • nobody is emphasising religion here:) muslim magomayev died a few months ago and the phrase "allah rehmet elesin" is the analogus of "rest in peace" in Azerbaijani, the great maestro's native language.

  • Muslim is just his name.Surname is Magomaev

  • Agree with you, sgttorre. It shows the insecurity of these Muslims who don't know their identity.

  • @osiarap ... I think his nick name is Muslim, not that he belongs to Islam :)

  • That does not sound like a Baryton Martin,as we used to have in France, no it sounds like a true Baritone with a great top, but I do not hear him as Pelleas

  • rip he passed away yesterday

  • Allah bu dahi Azerbaycanliya qeni-qeni rehmet elesin!

May the soul of this Great Azerbaijani rest in peace!

  • He looks like christian bale from the side.

  • He is actully one of the truest baritones that i have heard in a while.

    I was surprised!

  • That is because in modern times many people particularly in America have become confused between bass baritone and baritone. People think that singers like Pons and Terfel are what a baritone should sound like. Muslim Magomayev had quite a dark voice really, although in this clip his voice is much brighter than it usually is. Hvorostovsky and Kennlyside are the two baritones more like what that word used to mean.

  • Pons is a baritone. A dramatic baritone. Terfel is a bass bariton, but should be a baritone. There are different types of baritone. Muslim sounds leaning towards a lyric. He can switch between lyric and verdi. Dimitri leans more towards Verdi/dramatic. But nobody considers terfel a true baritone... he does bass-baritone rep!

  • I don't think he is a tenor. If you are looking for the "Martinb Baritone", that wouldn't be him either. To me, he is a lyric baritone with a dramatic twist,. The voice gets clarer, or darker, depending on the repertoire. However, I belive that no matter what, he has a gorgeous sound and is very musical. He is very young. Wounder what he sounded like whan he was in his 40s.

  • Great! Thanks!

  • He is singing as a high baritone to my ears.Tito Ruffo and caruso are almost indistinguishable from each other in the great Othello duet,Bergonzi was a baritone in his early career and Paolo Silveri sang as tenor baritone and bass, some people can sing over a wide range but usually settle for one.The mighty baritone Leonard warren was said to be able to sing top c,and when you hear him singing Invictus you can believe it,he still has some spare in that item.

  • He isn't a Tenor to all those who say he is. He is a high Baritone. There is a name for it but I can't remember right now. He's not a tenor the same way a mezzo soprano is not a soprano.

  • Hi,

The name for this kind of Baritone is "French baritone". I agree with you.

I think Magomayev's voice works well for the role of Eugene Onegin.

    My Best,

    Raquel Barbieri

  • French sometimes call that type of a baritone "Bariton martin". He was a great concert performer and the youngest Peoples Artist in USSR but the relatively small size of his voice did not allow him to be on an operatic stage for a long time. He was also called Russian Mario Lanza singing popular repertoir on concert tours.

  • Come on! How can you tell he's a baritone?

He's voice is completly from a Tenor.

A real baritone? Sherill Milnes, Juan Pons, etc.

  • I agree. He sounds like a tenor to me.

  • sounds like a 2nd tenor to me

  • doesn't sound like a baritone to me; the voice doesn't change register until around f-g.

  • Sounds a lot like Gino Bechi.

  • No, sounds like a Muslim.

  • @osiarap ... I think his nick name is Muslim, not that he belongs to Islam :)
