Someone once made the comment that Michael McDonald always dressed like an office worker forced to stay late and it struck a cord with me, I think that was always the appeal (besides the great music) that Mr. McDonald was an average person just making wonderful music for a living.
I have a documentry about the Doobies with them all talking about the band and how they got such a good sound because they used 2 sets of drums. You can see both drummers at 3:00. The other band that used 2 drummers was The Funk Brothers, who were the Motown band, which added the great sound of Motown. Of course, the other musicians were exceptional, too.
@1skunkus He had a part in a lot of tunes in that time. When you listen to that Robbie Dupree number what you're really hearing is Michael McDonald. That rhythmic chordal piano playing is McDonald all over. He plays piano like he's playing drums. And taking nothing away from Christopher Cross who is a fabulous songwriter and quite a good guitarist but it's the first thing that strikes you when you hear Ride Like The Wind, also.
Ok so I am havin a moment..I am almost 40 and I have had a closet crush on Michael McDonald since about 1978 LOL but why does he look like "Jesus" to me in this clip...gigglin to myself...
I remember seeing this concert at the time blew me away does anybody know where it was and what they called it would love to locate and download

@PietPassword Yes but now compare the rhythm with Steal away by robbie dupree, so much alike, I think Michael had part in that.

I challenge anyone, once they get that brilliantly infectious keyboard riff into their brain, to get it out in under a week...won't happen.
