A trademark of a great comedy: you watch this sequence fifty times and it is still funny. Kudos to the script writing but also to Hedaya as well, he is simply hilarious.
On top of the bad boss, there's the wall tiling straight out of a New York City subway bathroom, and those soul-sucking lights that make this the Workplace from Hell!
One of the greatest films and surely the greatest with such huge flaws. The opening sequence of Joe at the protology supply plant are simply magnificent film making.
As great at the opening is, how nice the middle comic sections with Bridges, Hedaya and Davis are, the island sequence is simply awful. I hesitate to call a parody racist, but it's precious close. The ending including is redemption.
Racist against who, exactly? I mean I've heard many people say the ending sequence is weak/doesn't work (I happen to agree that the Islanders are a joke that doesn't come off), but I'd never heard it called racist before, and that's kind of a serious accusation.
this sequence is friggin' classic!!! had to rewind it and watch it over at least ten times in a row the first time i saw this flick! laughed so hard, i was cryin'! hedaya's a god!!! still quote it like the moron i am at least once a week.
Great movie..unfortunately the final third isn't as good...but the first 2 acts are superbly written, a great observation on most people's lives working lame jobs...funny funny
Totally disagree. You have to take the story somewhere. The only people who can't follow part 3 like yourself are the ones who don't get what Shanley's after.
This is the best movie clip. I have loved this forever. In fact, whenever I'm stuck on an airport or the train and I'm a prisoner to a one-sided cell conversation, if they keep repeating a line (very often if you listen), I call it a Joe vs. Volcano conversation.
I think it's more like this monotonous nagging sound you're supposed to hear in the background. Something soul-sucking. Hedaya has to ad-lib this and he does a great take!
It's as if they cloned my workplace, right down to the perpetually flickering fluorescent lamps. There are about 65 Mr. Waturi's at job.

One of my all time favorite films - guiltily so.

That's not one of the funnier things. You must be sexually underaged and repressed.

Watch as Joe walks to get a cup of coffee, it looks like he's walking up into some smaller room.
