It was my first ever concert at 13 yrs old, 7 rows from the stage in front of Paul and Ace. August 27th, 1977 - the night Gene caught his hair on fire, they were filming that news show "Hype land and glory". That concert changed my life, still have my " I was there" shirt........
This was my first KISS concert in 1977.I was introduced to KISS from the KISS Alive album but did not get to see them in concert until the KISS Alive II tour.We had great seats first section going up but down at the floor right side.Second concert was the Dynasty tour and I was on the floor front row dead center.Got a Paul Stanley guitar pick and had a hold of Ace's Sweat rag for a while along with someone else.I got tired of fighting and wanted to watch the rest of the show.I let go of it.Px
I went to one of the La 77 forum shows, They played 3 nights i believe & i went fri, When alive II came out I remember The order of the songs are diff then the order they were played.
"I Was There!" I was 15 Years old. Was so blown away with the concert. I am licensed Pyro now. I couldn't wait to get a hold of "Alive II", I told all my friends how awesome it would be. It was a disapointment. Don't get me wrong, for those of you NOT there, a good rock album. For those of us who were there, we were wondering why TAKE ME was missing & all the solos were hacked up into seconds. 90 mins of concert turned into about an hour, even less as Tomorrow & Hard Luck Woman were never played
I feel your pain. As it turns out, very little (if any) of Alive II is from these LA shows. Tomorrow & Tonight and Hard Luck Woman were recorded during soundchecks and most of the other live tracks were recorded during the '77 Japan Sneak Attack tour.
@IBZ1965 just about all of Alive II is from the shows at the LA Forum. The only exceptions are the 2 songs from soundcheck that you mention and Beth and maybe one other one that were from the tour of Japan earlier in the year
@dandylion18 I suppose you can't believe everything you read but Eddie Kramer is quoted in "KISS: The Complete Touring History" as saying that most of the Alive II tracks were recorded during the '77 Sneak Attack Japan tour.
I could be completely wrong but If you've ever heard "The Lost Alive II Album" bootleg, (which is entirely from that Japan tour) you can definately hear that many of the tracks are the same ones that appear on Alive II.
I feel your pain. As it turns out, very little (if any) of Alive II is from these LA shows. Tomorrow & Tonight and Hard Luck Woman were recorded during soundchecks and most of the other live tracks were recorded during the '77 Japan Sneak Attack tour. Interestingly, some early Alive II jacket printings mistakenly list Take Me on side one even though it was never on the actual album.
Was this the concert they used for KISS Live II? As I recal, they were in LA for 3 or 4 nights. My friend went to the opening night and he always complained the songs on the album didn't sound like the ones he heard at the concert. For instance, Paul would say something during a song but it wasn't on the album.
During the reunion at Irvine Meadows the smoke was covering the risers and all you could see was their bodies from the knees up and it seriously looked like they were flying or floating. I don't think this was by design but it looked really cool!
yknow, KISS is KISS no matter what! yes we LOVE the orginals but we werent calling KISS "half kiss" when Eric Carr and Bruce were in the band. so wtf? what makes Tommy and Eric Singer so horrible. i mean Eric Singer was in the band back in the early 90's. listen, Ace gave Tommy the rights to put on the Spaceman make up alright. yes i love the originals as much as all of you! but cmon! Enjoy the music! KISS is still KISS! its all good!
@4mistermakebelieve4 Ace didn't give Tommy permission. One of the conditions of the reunion tour was that Ace and Peter had to sell all rights to their makeup designs to Paul and Gene (they got paid about $5 million each).
@4mistermakebelieve4 Gene owns the rights to the name "Kiss" and all the intellectual property that goes with it, so he could go through with his grand vision of Kiss touring someday with NONE of the original members. Me, I'm a purist. I only want to see them if it's Paul, Gene, Ace and Peter. Tommy and Eric are great musicians, but it's not the same.
@4mistermakebelieve4 In my opinion, Eric Carr's situation was different. When Eric was in KISS-he DIDN'T wear Peter's make-up and costume. Same with Vinnie Vincent. He DIDN'T wear Ace's make-up and costume. Bruce, in my opinion, on the other hand, as decent as he was playing guitar (in KISS), he didn't have the "larger-than-life" or "superhero" persona that Ace had. Eric Singer? He may be in KISS, today, BUT, he's NO Peter Criss-and I KNOW WHAT DRUMMER I PREFER TO SEE!
I was actually AT one of these 3 shows when they recorded alive II and it was so great even then! They kicked ass then and still do but yeah 1/2 of a full kiss... Keep rockin guys!
@debgibsonfan Totally agree. Back in the day, no one could match Paul's vocals, and Aces's abillity to make the solos fit the songs perfectly. Their stage presence etc...
@hemmlock1947 Again, look at the shots of Gene at the end and you can see the points going up. This Black Diamond clip shows they are very much flat unlike on the other videos you've suggested. Regardless, I love the two clips you referenced.
@hemmlock1947 Not the same. If you look real close you can see the lines going up. They are not as thick. Besides, Gene said that he purposely didn't extend them for the LA Shows so he could always remember those shows.
This is from the shows at the Forum in LA that were used for KISS Alive II. You can also tell because Gene said on his make-up that the points above his nose were not there for these shows so he would always remember them. You can see that in this video.
I know Gene wore the horns attached to his cape(behind his shoulders) on the 1st and 2nd shows at the Forum, by the 3rd show he ot them removed cause he wasn't confortable with them. I see his make up as allways. What do you mean?
@hgmcalifas If you look at Gene's make-up he has a point on each side, above his nose traditionally. During these three sold-out shows at the Forum he filed those points down. The rest of his mak-up is the same. If I could draw it for you, you would see what I mean. If you watch this clip and look closely at his make-up and then watch another, you'll see what I mean.
Yes, noe I see it. You right. The horns on his cape are another reference. I know he had hell on 2nd show. 2 boys threw things at him till they were busted by security, the horns made it difficult for him to move plus his hair caught on fire... poor Gene!. So the 3rd noght he didn't have horns...wow!! I had no idea about the detail on his make up... thanks!
More than that, especially Gene's background singing. Difficult to be spot on using that kinda voice. That's one thing I know that 100% true. On "Alive II, "I Want You" & 1 or 2 other songs were from Japan & "Hard Luck Woman" & "Tommorow & Tonight" were done in soundcheck. Take a listen to "I Want You" on the live album & compare it to the version that's on the Box Set & you'll notice that it's ther same. That's why they faded out the song near the end.
Yes, sorry about going off on "Alive II.", I was answering kinda to another post. I have "Animalize" show that they aired on mtv, when the "m" meant "music." Yeah, that's touched up quite a bit, never heard the real version of it. You can hear on songs where the only harmonies you hear are from Paul. I didn't think it had to be touched up THAT much w/that lineup, except for some singing & a few bad notes here & there. That show is available on dvdif you order it from Brazil. Cheap too.
Alive was overdubbed somewhat but was still mostly live. Alive II is a different story, it was an overblown studio recreation of a live concert. The source material came from shows in Los Angeles and Tokyo but the overdubs were done at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey. They were in Passaic for at least a week and pretty much re-recorded the entire show. Kiss ran around on stage and had to pay attention to production details, which made it difficult for them get it musically perfect.
This is from back when they were Gods... and the undisputed Lords of the universe. Peters throne reaches higher than the ceiling of Valhalla, the hydralic lifts rescues the three axmen from the fires of hell, and as it's security rail gently massages their hairy ass cracks, burning sulfur consumes the disciples below...Glory be to the Gods of old.
You are right! I personally don't mind if overdubs are used on a live album. If it creates good art, then so be it. Alive 1 was overdubbed but it is a great album(IMO). Alive 2 was dubbed, and it is o.k., not great, but o.k. (IMO).
OK for all of you who don't know, and even those who have mentioned it before, this footage came from the BNBC program "Land Of Hype And Glory". But it is without Edwin Newman's overdubbed commentary, which makes it a rather interesting find.
So they obviously did a video of this show. Alive II was awesome. I would love to know if there is a full video from the whole album. That would be awesome. Alive II was recorded at the Forum in 77.
if you listen to some ace frehley interviews, there was nothing "fake" going on. it's just that some of the guitar tracks/ solos didn't go over so well with all the choregraphy, so they would punch in a missed note or 2. not a big deal.
These guys were like superheroes to me when I was a kid growing up in the seventies, like a million others I'm sure, but now as an adult, and after hearing of all the "doctoring" of the live albums, and the fact that Ace and Peter never even played on a few, kind of turned me, but as I look back on the big picture, they did entertain me and millions around the world, so I'll always love KISS for all the great childhood memories I have because of them.
OMG! Thats so F**ing cool!!! Put it up on your channel for all to see...what a great time I bet you had and some great memories from this concert! Thats just awesome!!!
sorry to say T2TD i got nothing against you but keep on dreaming especially if paul says something how many times did they say something & it turned out totally crap like the kissology dics lots of incompltete shit in bad quality & most irretating the overdubbed crowd noise on all the kissology concerts even the "the land of hype & glory" footage wasnt complete this would not be the first or last time they let us fans down...
tommyr i wud agree with u apart from i went to c kiss at download in juse and its the best they have looked and sounded the music was just amazing seen kiss 14 times from 1983 to now and the reunion tour as cool as it was to see the proper band they were all over the place
This is the same as the inside cover to Alive II. I wish that I had seen it. I did see the Reunion tour. That was the Alive II stage minus the stairs. I saw Dynasty, Asylum, Crazy Nights, Hot in the Shade, and Revenge, also. You can add Ace Frehley in July 1987, too.
I think they haven´t filmed the whole concert. This and some other clippings took part in the US TV show "Hype & Glory". It was aired 1977. Pieces of it are now in the KISSOLOGY II DVD Box. KISS 1977 was simply awesome. They had the best show ever!!!
Where did you get this????? For being the peak of their career, they certainly don't have a whole lot of footage from this time. They need to have a Kissology set just for this period...especially the bass solos. Awesome!!! Thanks.
best stage ever should have brought it back exactly like this not the crap 96 reunion one which sucked.

This footage appeared in an old 1970's NBC TV documentary called Land Of Hype And Glory hosted by Edwin Newman.

Is this acctually from one of the Forum-concerts which led to "Alive II"?
Off course the whole show must been filmed, there's cameras everywhere in this shoot?
I would love to have clips from the concerts which leds to the Alive-albums!

I think they haven´t filmed the whole concert. This and some other clippings took part in the US TV show "Hype & Glory". It was aired 1977. Pieces of it are now in the KISSOLOGY II DVD Box. KISS 1977 was simply awesome. They had the best show ever!!!
theinvisableman 4 years ago
Where did you get this????? For being the peak of their career, they certainly don't have a whole lot of footage from this time. They need to have a Kissology set just for this period...especially the bass solos. Awesome!!! Thanks.
