  • Smokey wrote a few Marvelettes songs ,Marvin Gaye did wrote one to Beechwood 456789

  • Anyone know where the lyrics to "Tonight was made for Love" are?

I would love to find them and know them. It's such a beautifully phrases song. Yea, gladys

  • What a great song! I love that opening.

  • at :13 a Diva!!!

  • The Marvelettes Motown 78 rpm Discovered a few years ago, net search will take you to the article, the most rarest Motown record in the world, even surpassing then label mate Frank Wilson..

  • I love how Gladys and Wanda willingly shared the spotlight. I love The Marvelettes!

  • Psychedelic soul....this song appealed to a certain moment in the history of people listening in the 60s...presto....uh huh mama...pure magic...

  • DILLA

  • Oh, my morale was low

Then he appeared just like a genie

    His love has the power

    He's my private Great Houdini

    Awesome lyrics!

  • @45vinyljunkie that Smokey Robinson knew he could turn a phrase!

  • Smokey is a poet and must have had some great English teachers in Motown back in the day!

  • and then presto, changeo, Alakazam, I'm alright again, oh yes I am....clever lyrics. Unique, creative voices. The Marvelous Marvelettes had their own signature sound. The music is kickin.

  • funky, funky, lyrical bass...Jamerson slangin' the groove!!!

  • sounds good thx

  • nothing against gladys but she was going to leave to persue a solo career so wondas husband asked smokey to let wanda try out and he like her right off but gladys stayed on and you know the rest

  • there so nice if i had a million dollors i would give it to wanda just to get a hug???

  • @sheddski Both Wanda and Gladys are deceased!

  • @kurtsupreme Wanda Young Rogers is NOT deceased.Georgeanna Tillman Gordon died in 1980 from Lupus, Gladys Horton passed away this past year from complications of a stroke.Wanda has not been in good health but she is very much alive!

  • @soulfultony I could swear that I heard that Wanda was deceased as well...........I knew that she had not been in good health for years. I may be wrong. Perhaps she is still alive.

  • @dvlaries...your are so right. Gladys took the them to a certain place, but Wanda took them beyond.

After their initial Motown hits, the Marvelettes never got the chance to shine the way they should have. They could have been everything the Supremes were, if things had taken a slightly different turn.

  • In the 80s, on a radio oldies program, I requested this song (according to Billboard, it hit the Top 20). The host said he had it on an album back home. What was played at times instead of this song?? Unreleased, yet popular album cuts by the Beatles (perhaps even Ringo singing in the shower). Remember, the Marvelettes had hit number one a few years before the Beatles became big stars.

  • This is one of the most rocking songs from that most wonderful era !!! I can't get enough of it. Gives me chills ...

  • grandma and my grandaddy live dis song

  • Great song. I remember sitting in my car with my girlfriend listening to this on my car's AM radio .

  • i love this song! coming out of tha h town mustafa

  • Without taking anything away from the late, great Gladys Horton, once Smokey Robinson determined he was going make hits on the Marvelettes by bringing forward Wanda Young, the sex appeal of the group shot through the roof. When a Marvelettes song needed an authoritative laying down of the law, that was Gladys; when it needed a seductress, then Wanda was your girl.

  • Melvin recreated, "I am under your power, it is the power of love" for the Temptations' song "Magic" sung by Ali Woodson from the "SPECIAL" LP.

  • I just love Wanda! I love her, love her, love her!

  • just about my favorite by this unsung Motown great!

  • Motown Magic......

  • That is one fine lead guitar, 5****

  • for all the music that made today what happen to the class of a song

  • TODAY IS KATHERINE'S BIRTHDAY, GUYS!!!! (01/16)

  • this is such a fantastic song, I used to here on my way to school everyday, what a flashback.

  • No mystic crystal ball, No long black flowing cape.. REAL MUSIC.. Motown and The Marvelettes. doesn't get any better then this..and of course the fabulous 60's a time of some of the best music that ever was and ever will be! I was blessed to have been born in the 50's to appreciate ALL the music from the 60's & 70's a time of Wonder & Joy!

Great memories, music, people and the best of the best of times!

Thank you @dynamite8503 for posting this GEM!

  • It seems as though the Motown girl groups had their own distinctive hit styles - The Supremes were Pop/Soul, The Marvelettes were Jazz/Soul, and Martha and the Vandellas were R&B/Soul-

  • i feel like im in a cooley high movie everytime i hear this!!

  • Remember, you are still under the power of Melvin Franklin and MOTOWN!

  • larry randolph played the bass. how i know he was my father. rip

  • Perfect record.

  • Dilla sampled this for an awesome beat!

  • j dilla sampled this song.....how the hell did he flip this so good???

  • AWWWW I', in heaven, listen to that voice, HEAVEN is the only way to describe it..

  • those girls could get it done i remember all there songs and i was only 9or 10 and they were so sexy and hot

  • @sheddski larry randolph played the bass... rip

  • james jamerson workin' that upright bass.

  • ‎:-) Stumbled on this today and recognised the opening voice/guitar riff! Emperor Rosko, who used to play soul and reggae on Radio 1 in the 1970s, used to have it as his theme tune.

  • guitar break perfect "magical" touch!

  • to the old von and old ed

  • Absolutely the best ! Great job dynamite8503 !

  • I love Motown

  • A great tune! To be honest, I think Berry put more interest in this group because he was trying to really put martha Reeves out of the picture. By the late '60s, she became a real pain in the butt

  • This tune was released by Motown on November 21, 1967 and it peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1968-

  • The supremes were just as good as the marveletts i prefer the marveletts but they were both great!!

  • I freaking love this song. I can;t stop listening to them

  • I wish music these days were as good as the music back then. =(

  • I have always enjoyed this song. Marvalettes forever!

  • Big ups to the great James Jamerson on bass. One of the best of his many masterpieces.

  • This was the first record Wanda led as the leader of the Marvelettes. 1967 was also the year Gladys Horton left The Marvelettes for marriage and to start her family.

  • This is not the first record that Wanda led vocals on... Wanda sang lead on SO LONG BABY (1961), FOREVER (1963), DANGER HEARTBRAD DEAD AHEAD (1965), DONT MESS WITH BILL (1965), THE HUNTER GETS CAPTURED BY THE GAME (1966), WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG AND IN LOVE (1966) ... Just to name a few

  • mystkpizza, this WAS THE "FIRST" RECORD WANDA LED AS THE "LEADER" of the Marvelettes (please re-read my post).

  • @mystkpizza dont forget, there was also I'LL KEEP HOLDING ON (1965), DESTINATION: ANYWHERE (1968), HERE I AM BABY (1968), THAT'S HOW HEARTACHES ARE MADE (1969), MARIONETTE (1970), and A BREATH TAKING GUY (1971)-

  • Daft I know but I sometimes wish I was a few years older and been able to see these terriffic artists when they first came to the UK on the Motortown Revue. Especially if I could have appreciated them the way I do now.

  • This tune was released by Motown on November 21, 1967 and it peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January of 1968- this was also their last major hit as well-

  • Apart from great singers, the Motown female singers were always well dressed.

  • @Teaser0424 I agree

  • Love the song -- Love the video!

  • First heard this on WABC or WMCA in New York. Think I was 5 or 6. Never forgot it. Glad I found it. Thanks for posting!

  • When I was about nine (around 1974), I saw three girls walking down the alley. The one in the middle took a 45 RPM out of her purse, and threw it over her shoulder. They all looked at each other, laughed and kept walking. Me, being a record lover, went and got it. And that's how I got my copy of "My Baby must be a Magician". I'll always wonder why they got rid of it like that. Odd.

  • Wanda and The Andantes........fantastic

  • J-Dilla introduced me to this classic...Elzhi did his thing too. It's hard to see how JD was able to put together what he did when you hear the original...both pieces are great.

  • @Lawrentz82 Thats awesome i did not know he sampled this. I love this song. What is his version called

  • Love Dilla

  • You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but the Supremes were far from overrated...they were SUPREME! The Marvelettes were also fabulous, though, and were just as talented! These treasured songs will live in our memories forever.

  • I was raised in Detroit from 64 on. I know about the Supremes. I liked them until Diana Ross broke up the group for the reason that Mary Wilson was getting more popularity then her. But unfortunately Ross had the say in the group because she was Gordy's secretary. She ruined Mary Wilson's career over jealously

and until this day I do not respect Diana Ross I think she is a jealous piece of shit. Read the book about the Supremes like I did and it will open your eyes up to Ross.

  • Love this song even though I was only in grammer school at the time. How come some video clips and album covers show 3,4 and 5 girls?

  • The Marvelettes started with 5 girls and over time they dwindled down to 3

  • @dynamite8503 This is a what spirituality is...Yup

  • Thank you, Jay Dee.

  • Mary Joe Tillman died.

  • OK, let's play a game of overrated/underrated.

    Overrated: The Supremes

    Underrated: The Marvelettes

  • I'll just say that I was having fun with the Marvs long before the Supremes came along and I did enjoy the Marvelettes a lot more

  • great job on the video portion It brings the music up to date- even though its timeless

  • Melvin Franklin intro; The Andantes singing in the backgound; Fine Wanda singing a sultry, sexy lead. It don't get any better than that. In the mid and late sixties when the Supremes had several # 1 hits, young ladies in West Baltimore tried imitate the MARVELETTES, not Ross & Co.

  • I got to give you your props! Awesome video. I love the pictures and the effects as well as the song. Thanks!!!!!

  • Thank you for this video and your personal take on this song. Very well done!!!!

  • Is that Melvin Franklin doing the spoken intro? Also, it sounds like all the Temptations on background vocals.

  • yes it is Melvin at the beginning, but I don't think The Tempts did backing vocals

  • The Andantes are in the background.

  • J Dilla flipped this on a beat cd I got

  • i can't figure out which one

  • I dont know if it has a name..its just numbered beat cd but look for Elzhi - Checkmate

  • man they look so good in those green dresses!

  • That rhythm is infectious!

  • My favorite Marvelettes song! Classic and sharp!

  • Beautiful song, love the pics!

  • Fine ass women

  • So this is where Teena Marie got the idea for "This Must Be Magic" from

  • I love this song. I grew up in Detroit with Motown Records. The Marvelettes were right up there with the Supremes and the Vandellas. Peace.

  • Just saw a LIVE SHOW in Vegas ! Didn't sing this awesome piece... Great piece of nostalgia and wonderful video. Thanks !!

  • No special ears! love love love this song.

  • No.... It's "No special GEAR" (not "ear"). But that was the great thing about songs in the 60s. Hearing them over AM radio often had bad reception, so you missed the details and had to make up something that seemed to work. Great song!

  • This song shows what a superb wordsmith Smokie Robbo was. It contains every "Magician" cliche, each one beautifully phrased.

    Go Smokie

  • @Bushbaby387 So true. Great point. This was also Smokey;s contribution to the psychedelic tsunami that came with the British invasion - i.e. Beatles' Sgt Peppers etc. This composition was absolutely brilliant. Miss Rogers at the top of her game. Kathy and Gladys vocals are right on Wanda's back. "From his tender loving clutch"- Sing Wanda!

  • Love the song! Favorite girl group of all time...thanks so much.

  • Keep in mind that Motown didn't have the staff or resources to promote every group equally or even based on "merit". Like it r not, Barry's relationship with Diana Ross made her his priority which more than paid off with millions of records sold -- and a beautiful daughter. Well-read Motown fan, QTK

  • nope boils down to the marveletts were offered a hit record they turnt it down and it was passsed on to the supremes and the mrvelettts were pushed down on the latter.

  • -_-

  • The answer can be found in the fact that AT THAT TIME, whoever Ed Sullivan wanted, The Supremes, J5, etc.. That would be who Motown spent the most tome and energy with. An appearance on his show back then was the most coveted gig in show business. Remember-NO CABLE, FM wasn't even big yet. BUT, I agree these girls were VERY underrated.

  • I like melvin´s bass

  • i never knew this was the marvelettes. they deserved so much more recognition. they were the first girl group with a big hit for motown after all. they deserved better.

  • AMEN!

  • I agree, one of the most underrated groups at Motown but then again a lot of groups suffered on account of Barry Gordy putting most of his focus and energy on The Supremes or should I say...um...Diana Ross.

  • Nice job. There are a few photos I had never seen before. Cool.

  • This song is great. The Marvelettes were really ignored by Motown and I cant figure out why. They were so popular in Detroit, my friends mother named her "Marvelette".

  • I remember when I was ten and I first heard my mothers copy of this song. It instantly became one of my favorites. I really wish motown would not have ignored this group. Does anyone know if Wanda, Katherine or Gladys has written a book on the Marvelettes?

  • Yes. There was a book written in 2004 by Marc Taylor called The Original Marvelettes. I do agree tha this was one of Motown's most overlooked groups. I had the good fortune to see them live in 1967 and they were a truly dynamic group. My favorite girl group. You can probably find the book on Ebay

  • I READ& RE-READ that book!Surely there must have been more to their story than this? Marc Taylor did NOT do his job,as a writer. His book about my favourite group was a big disappointment. He basically did not tell me anything that I did not already know. He was too busy "kissin' up to Katherine& Gladys rather than tell the entire truth. For instance; He let them completely trash Wanda^ Georgeanna, while they got to look"Squeeky Clean" by comparison.I could have done a better job!

  • What a nice song. Thank you.

  • Wow! When I hear this--I am transported to a time, circa 1967, suburban New Jersey, I am a little girl of 7 sitting in a beauty salon waiting for my mom and bouffant, hairspray and vidal sasoon cuts are ubiquitous....and this song..this amazing song pops on the radio...made a long lasting impression on me!

  • Take me back to 1967 with ya shemstock! When I was a 17 yr old Jersey guy from Wayne. Yes, indeed!

  • shemstock, I was 10 when this piece rocked Teaneck, New Jersey!

  • Good god, one of the great openings of any song from the '60s! Plus, some of Smokey's typically witty lyrics and Wanda Rogers' beautiful vocals. The Marvelettes are the best. Thanks much for so cleverly interpreting it!

  • This is what you call singing.

  • Soulful organ bed. And of course the incomparable Papa Zita (Benny Benjamin) on drums.

  • Nice effects . . . I've always loved the song. You did a great job with this video:

nice photos --- good special efx.

  • thanks

  • I love your video. I like the addition of Melvin Franklin when he's intro is playing

  • Favorite girl group of all time! Thanks so very much!

  • I listened to this great song, and then presto, chango, alakazam- I'm all right again, Oh yes I am!

  • A very nice entertaining video for one of those nostalgic favorite songs I grew up on.Here too were the other Dreamgirls that were a sensation during their tenure of the 1960's.They rivaled the Supremes and Martha Reeves & The Vandellas.

  • Wow! I haven't heard this song in a couple of years! Melvin Franklin cannot be duplicated.

  • Nice vid and pix - thanx for posting Dyna-Shu!

  • Enjoyed this very much, and I like your work as well. Lots of memories.

  • If anyone really knows the temptations music, like i do.....if u noticed melvin says that same exact line on Teena Marie's song (It Must be Magic) and then he says it on the Temptations Song called (Magic)....that song came of there 1985 album called Touch me(I think)...but if i'm wrong i will doubt check 4 you....

  • cool pics

    like the song

i see u have the pic of flo hahah

i am not gonna say anything about pic stealing

cuz everybody is going to get on my case..lol

  • And you better not! Considering Flo WAS touring with the marvelettes at the time!!

The marvelettes can stand without any fanfare from the supremes!!!
