Running on Air, the MDI Airpod

It is now November 2011. In this video of late 2009 MDI claims that production will start in early 2010.

We are still waiting for production to start, as we have been waiting ever since MDI announced in 1999 that production would start in 2000.

@DanFrederiksen -- the 15km range was mentioned by a KLM official inadvertently during a presentation.  Others with contacts with MDI received confirmation, and via some true believers on a French air car forum MDI said that the low range was because the prototypes were more than twice as heavy as the production car would be. Of course, MDI had earlier said that the prototypes were final prototypes except for the size of the reservoir.

It's hard to keep the MDI story straight.

In September 2009 MDI says production and sales will start in January or February 2010. Then production was to be May 2010. Then November 2010. Then MDI was to build a factory for distributor Catecar in Switzerland and start production in March 2011.

Nothing has happened. No cars have been built. The MDI website has no schedule of when they hope to finish development.

One year later, we are still waiting for production to start.

Same status as each and every year over the last 10+ years ---- production will start "next year".

In September 2011, we will probably still be waiting for production "next year'.

We have learned that the prototype Airpod has a range of less than 15km. That is an improvement over the 2003 model that ran out of air after 7.22km.

I hope MDI is remedying the comments. Why would the demo car work while the manufactured air car run such a short distance? To learn to improve, build sell and get feedback. Then remodel. US needs this car.

It is not a technical fraud. It does work - maybe not as good as they say. Problem is getting people to make them

The world is going electric with advances in batteries. Nissan is make the 100% EV, Leaf in the UK. 80% charge in 10 mins

Compressed air has a role in a hybrid mode - brake regen & starting. Air is free and does not wear out, unlike batteries

On the right track, but big money is looking at EVs

They need just one production line going and then focus would be on the technology

@FlyByCable it runs very well i saw it it was awesome,not very good design btw, but it can go 120km/h,the range is about 150km with one air fill (1€) i am talking about the "CityFlowAIR" concept model and it costs just 13000 € !

btw i will trust more the company that is trying to make the world more "green" and not the oil company's !

When I discovered these guys in early '04 I was pretty excited - especially when I heard that Negre Sr. designed that outrageous W12 for VW. Now that it is 2009 I am beginning to become a skeptic. I would love to see these produced, but like the rest of you, I al left wondering what is really going on.

At 2:55 Cyril Negre says in this Sept 20, 2009 video that he expects certification in a couple of weeks, and that in parallel they will start the production of the car.

His final statement is that "And in February (2010) we can sell them."

After the many, many premature announcements by MDI about forthcoming production, does ANYBODY really believe that the AirPod will go on sale in February 2010.

In this 20th September video Cyril Negre of MDI says at 2:55 "We have done the certification tests. There is a certain matter of administration paperwork. Now I think that within 1 week or 2 weeks certification will be OK."

A full month has passed, yet there has not been any announcement by MDI about certification. MDI doesn't answer inquiries about certification.

What is going on?

@Charlieutube99 As we approach the end of April 2010, MDI still has not received certification.  Rather than starting to sell the AirPod in Feb 2010 (as per this Sept 2009 video), the _projected_ start date for sales (or perhaps just "marketing") is now the end of 2010.

Any bets on whether at the end of 2010 that MDI is building any cars ???

We now know that when this video was filmed in September 2009 that the prototypes had an 84 liter tank, while the production tank is intended to be 230 liters. We also now know that MDI does not expect to receive this larger model of tank until late 2010.

So why is Cyril Negre standing there in September 2009 saying that they will start production in January or February 2010?

It is pretty clear that he knew that he would not have the tank by then.

That doesn't inspire much trust.

The certification tests were validated during second week of september. The certification of the Airpod is OK. Now MDI is waiting for the official report and certification paper. It should arrive on 8th of october. The delay is due to the fact that certifiction tests were done by sites in different countries in Europe. Production of the Airpod begins on january 2010 and first Airpod sold is planned for february 2010. It is planned to produce one Airpod each half an hour.

8th of October has come and gone. No announcement of any sort of certification paper. No "whole vehicle type acceptance" nor even the "individual vehicle type acceptance". This is spite of MDI's CEO having said that certification is complete.

What happened?

What happened to the certification tests that were supposed to have started in November 2001?

OK. It's now more than a month later, but MDI doesn't announce certification. They also announce that the Air France KLM tests originally scheduled for March 2009 won't start until sometime after January 2010.

The only thing MDI is consistent in doing is delaying, delaying, delaying.

I'm still waiting for the 6 passenger car they announced in 2000 for sales starting 2001.

Unfortunately, you probably will have to wait.

MDI has already been to this point of "almost in production" several times before over the last 10 years.

A "whole car type acceptance' would be a major milestone. If MDI is only getting a waiver similar to that you yourself would get to import a car not approved in your country, then it doesn't mean much.

It will be interesting to see what type, if any, of type acceptance will be issued.
