  • 2 guitar, 1 bass, one drum and a piano...but what a complex and orgazmatic sound...

  • 11 justin bieber angry fans

  • This is available on vinyl kiddies!!!

  • Superb version - Almost as good as the Byrds with Clarence White on lead ;-) (No offence intended Tom - Always great to hear this song!) ...

  • Great to see Petty draw attention to the less-known super-talented Byrds of '69-'72. They could rock live!

  • Ya happy Halloween ...just dancin around to Mudcrutch ...what an awesome feel to all this ...Like a lot of love in the air you can feel the vibe or at least I got it :) WOOT!!!!

  • gus put me on to this , amazing track great energy

    my reaction ? incredible !!

  • Anyone say .... FN HISTORIC! i love when TP smiles!

  • Mike Campbell is an outstanding guitarist ........... tasty licks.

He gets great tone from whatever guitar he happens to be playing.

He has not received the accolades that he deserves for his masterful playing.

  • @todd11561 _Heck Yes...I am more and impressed with what you stated about his style and tone.

  • dude with the sunglasses is all business fucking rocking

  • Does Anyone know what colour Mikes Telecaster is ?

  • @TheACDCnutter It's called alpine white, I have the same one, but with maple boards not rosewood.

  • What a song! Fantastic!

  • Saw this band play back in Gainesville, Fla. on the University of Fla. campus...many, many times.(circa 70-71 school year). Petty was the bass player, and mostly I recall them doing Chuck Berry songs. Hell, Tom was the only guy I saw still wearing Beatle Boots at that time! They were "THE" local band for those mushroom crazed Gators!!

  • ROCK LIVES ON!

Forget the popular, devoid of artistry, crap coming out now!

  • Man, is Mike Campbell amazing on that guitar or what?

  • Haha Tom at 4:25 is like "Fuck yeah we just made that"

  • no matter what.. Mudcrutch.. The Heartbreakers.. Solo.. Tom Petty is the greatest.. he doesn't get enough recognition

  • Just me, or is Tom channeling Bob Dylan on this one?

  • @cwnidog dude, petty was significantly influenced by dylan on virtually every song he's done.

  • @nitewingstudio thats very true isnt it?he sounds like a Dylan wannabe on every song!!

  • @nitewingstudio

Same with (although I love him) Arlo Guthrie, although he'd NEVER admit it!

  • Didn't even know the Ferrone/AWB connection, is that from way back or recent. Indeed he is one of the best and is technically peerless, but I I my heart is parted, the Mudcrutch album and Mojo have both great songs, what I meant to say is that Marsh plays really great drums on Lover Of The Bayou, extraordinary track, custom tailored for TP!

  • Why does Benmont have a nail stuck in his keyboard? Or is that a reflection?

  • nice band, good jimmy page lift on the first solo.......great music..great players,

  • nice band, good jimmy page lift to the first solo.......

  • The drummer nails it right from the start. I love the Byrds but this version is much better.... Tom Petty's version is a pile driver and credit to all playing on this

  • TP and Mudcrutch rock!, This band sounds great, their album is superb, Marsh and Leadon play with a lot of feel and TP is the best guitar player on bass ever!

  • TP is a honest rocker,no star poses, all about music,he's given the business the finger many times & sounds better each day, both Mudcrutch's and The Heartbreakers albums are 5stars,actually, I like Mudcrutch better,Tom Leadon excels, lets Mike go higher(if that is possible),TP plays bass just like a guitar player can:FU*****G GREAT, and Randall Marsh is way funkier than Lynch or Ferrone, what a band! what feel! what a song! what a video! and the smile on Tom's face says it all:WE ROCK MAN!

  • @julesrulescr I "Liked" your comment before reading the whole thing. Especially the part about Petty giving the finger to the industry, sounding better each day.

Marsh is a nice drummer, but not "way funkier" than Steve Ferrone. I mean, have you heard him with the Average White Band?

  • Its weird, the older Petty gets the more he sounds like Dillon. I love Petty man, hes beliveable, not like these newer bands. You just know he has been there.

  • Whether it's a solo act, with the heartbreakers, mudcrutch, or the traveling wilbury's: You never disappoint Tom. Keep on pumping out those timeless classics!

  • this is a cool song

  • wow 10 IDIOTS

  • There's a flyin' saucer in this video.

  • nice one!!

  • Tom is an incredible character. He and his groups are extremely dynamic.

  • Must be a magic convention because these guys are mind blowing.

  • hey , i like tom petty , but somehow the byrds orginial version of bayou is not around , it was better then mudcrutch`s version , so it was removed , tx tom

  • Good sound!

  • This is so insanely great. Seriously can listen to this over and over and never get sick of it.

  • I like it, cool choice, but the drummer does drag. Guessing that's why they got Stan Lynch!

  • @MisterMojoSinkin Man,this drummer is WAY funkier than stan lynch. This should have been the band to get the deal in the first place.

  • SSSSOARING SOLO......Takes me places.

  • Roger "Dodger" McGuinn was on fire as he lead The Byrds to stardom back in the 60s and through the early 70s with great songs such as this classic. Mud does it so well, too.

  • Love this song and Tom's hat! Also loving the face Tom makes at 4:04!!!

  • sizzlin guitar work.....great new tune....go mudcrutch......

  • This is GREAT!

  • Absolutely the best shit I've ever seen, heard or experienced from Mr. Petty.....He is my ...... my...... good man

  • After loving the original Byrds version for years I was sure this couldnt be near as good. But I loved it immediately- they absolutely nailed it! Now I can't decide which one I like most. The Byrds original is a bit more ragged, shorter, & no keyboards- other than that they're pretty similar. One has Clarence White, the other has Mike Campbell- both are awesome guitarists!

  • Drummer does a great job here. Right from the beginning he does

  • tom petty and the mudcrutchers!!!

  • I'm a Lover of The Bayou!

  • Mike Campbell rippin!

    Look the F@$K out!

  • Magic happens when you combine lead guitar with piano masterfully. This cover have brought this song to be one of the best.

  • @opeth40 You're retarded. The Birds version is straight 4/4, there's no swing or anything to it. In fact, this version is almost identical to the original.

  • @metalwillhatecrew . I heard this for the first time today on a radio station in Boston. Great song...but the commenter below is right...I went and listend to the orignal Byrds version.....the beat is definately different. And i like this much better. . No need to call the guy retarded though. LOL

  • Before the Hrartbreakers there was Mudcrutch...with a song from the Byrds Untiled album

  • The guitar in the bridge was the best... NIce, very original sound... I dig it totally!

  • new fan here love

  • Does he really sing"...zombies on your tail"? It's "...Baron Samedi's on your tail". I'm sure he checked the lyrics before hand; why'd he change them? Baron Samedi is way cooler than freakin' zombies.

  • does anyone else think petty is sounding a bit dylanesque in this vid?? and t sounds fucking great

  • @rantnraging he always has, that's what got him recognized.

  • sucked and weened on chicken bile? that's a bad boy.

  • i do know mike is the best same George Harrison concept, play for the song and enjoy.

  • Excellent version. Does the Byrds justice.

  • is petty on bass or vacals here?

  • wheres the version with clarence white which slays all

  • southern badass!!! hail the King!!!

  • I'm in love with you.. and the Bayou too.. xoxo

  • Great genuis artist of our time, who had balls big enough to stand up to the corporate bastards and insist on being true to himself and his art! Much love to you Tom!

  • Awesome as always! Incredible guitar, great lyrics, love Tom Petty and respect him so much for having the balls to be his own man as an artist and not knuckle under to the music worlds corporate crap! Love you Tom!

  • good to see them all back together doin what they do best

  • Nice to see Tom doing a tidy job on the bass. Man- I love his stuff so much :)

  • "Mud" is a nuclear term, it's acronym meaning "mutually undesireable destruction". Clandestine subterranean lab facilities applying synthetic telepathy weapons upon their subjects play this "cruth" to the hilt, to extort and exploit based on the obvious sordid and unsavoryness of their patheticness. Welcome to 21st century science, where secrecy is paramount thusly allowing for anything.

  • @bb4960

    Seriously? I'm asking....

  • Tom Petty's voice is similar to old Bob Dylan's voice

  • This recording session looks like they had an absolute blast. What a fine record. One of the best in Petty's catalogue.

  • I loved this song for years and years by the Byrds. This is Excellent version. Cool to see TP on Rickenbacker Bass. He looks like he came off the Beatles 69 photo shoot (hey jude lp cover)

  • Petty didn't write this one. Lover Of The Bayou is an old song written and recorded by The Byrds.

  • Three chords never sounded so right. We used to see Mudcrutch a lot in Gainesville in the early 70s. They played a lot on the UF campus for free. Mike C. & Tom Leadon were the stars of that show. Tom's brother Bernie was in the Eagles.Mudcrutch got fired publicly /onstage at Dub's lounge on N 441 as disco was beginning to rear its ugly head. That's when the band split for Oklahoma and on to L.A.......

  • Fucking ace.

  • lol! toms face at 4:05 XD

  • music is universal.. i think tom petty is 1 of the best ever. i feel u on the water down crap we have 2 put up with. but i like my rock, hip hop, jazz, salsa, ETC. to each is own...but try 2 be alil opeb minded..jus saying.

  • I do not get how our radio can be filled with such rubbish in our top 40's these days, when brilliant songs like this are still coming out! These beats the crap out of any Lilly Allen, Lady Gaga or this 'Jay-Z' moron.

  • Petty is Petty-- no matter what name the Band is.. love forever

  • wow!!!! just amazing

  • so beautiful.......

  • Tom Petty 最高!!

  • Heard this song on the radio today for the first time, so I had to find it on youtube...this is amazing...a classic. Wow.

  • bloody hell, this kicks ass from the first bar. Thanks a million VintageZigg and uploader for sharing.

  • How come nobody talks about Clarence White? There is no one alive today that even comes close to his virtuosity ........... what's up with that?

  • I know eh? He wrote the book on the b bender!!!

  • Que temazo, te vuela la peluca! Tom Petty es lo mas grande!!

  • Mike Campbell-the best lead guitarist most people don't even know!!!

  • Ya bet your ass. Mike Campbell RULES.

  • @aa4018881 Agree completely!!!!!!!!

  • @aa4018881 Amen to that - he's amazing.

  • Comment removed

  • i do know mike is the best same George Harrison concept, play for the song and enjoy.

  • @aa4018881 For sure !!! I love him, he got a fucking feeling =)

  • @aa4018881 Mike Campbell, unknown? Then what does that make Tom Leadon?

  • Tommy Leadon on rythmn guitar-brother of the great Eagle Bernie Leadon

  • great reprise des BYRDS

  • gotta say love this! awesome in every musical respect ! And, if you've been in the Bayous - you can relate to being awestruck, in love with that primordial region of earth, magical, terrifying in one emotion

  • magic...

  • yeah man it IS magic!

  • Great version - Great Album

  • nooo the byrds pwn this

  • I really love this song...

  • Is this the drummer from the original Heartbreakers?

  • No, that's Randall Marsh on drums. He was the drummer for Mudcrutch before the Heartbreakers were form. The record company broke up Mudcrutch, Tom asked Mike to play with him because he had a solo contract. Benmont was making his own band after Mudcrutch broke up called the drunks and asked Ron Blair and Stan Lynch play with him. Stan would become the drummer for the HB while Ron would play bass. So the HBs are basically happened because of Benmont and thank god for all of them getting together

  • I thank God for them all getting together, too. I think that Bernie Leadon should join his brother Tom in the Mudcrutch band...and bye the way, bring along ol' Maundy Quartet dude Don Feldner. Go Gainesville, Florida!! And I want to hear Benmont do a solo CD - with friends.

  • nope, original Mudcrutch though

  • I cant believe how raw and smooth this band sounds. Awesome. Luv the Mud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I can't believe we are talking about Jimmy page here. Different genre of music. Crap Guys yall are so stupid. And the sad part is that you are not keeping it a secret. Now everybody knows how stupid you are. Jimmy is not even near this conversation. Go Mud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Don't you hate that?

    Guitar pukes.

  • jimmy may not be as good at slide but he is WAY better as far as improv...he doesnt play the same thing the same way twice...mark of a great guitarist in ALOT of situations. i was just lookin for the byrds and found this. THIS BLOWS. Clarence White was a better player than both of them.If you dont know who he is which you probably dont since ur watchn this... i would definently recomend him to anybody that likes music that is actually good.the original kills this dumb shit. Ya and Jimmy wails XP

  • this is a great video. and as for Jimmy Page vs. Mike Campbell, personally, i like mike better, he's not as sloppy and can play slide better than Jimmy(even though he doesnt play it in this song).

  • tom petty is the mac daddy of rock and roll survivors and he will continue to make some awesome songs until they put him in the ground

  • this is a byrd song ..I love petty

  • this is a byrd song ...sooo cool I love petty

  • Ke groso ke es Tom Petty por dios!! from Argentina!!

  • More proof that Tom Petty is invincible.

  • I wish he would come to Scotland in concert. Been listening to a lot of stuff over the past 25 years- Tom Petty is the constant :)

  • By the way, I keep seeing posts saying one of the lyrics are "Baron Samedi is on your tail"? Good God people, it's "and there are zombies on your tail." Sorry, just had to mention that. Also, in case you were wondering, a gris gris bag is kind of a voodoo bag used to ward off evil spirits and negative vibes, usually made partially with the owner's hair and a few personal effects. Thought I'd throw that out there, 'cause I had no clue at first what in the hell a gris gris bag was.

  • Thanks for your info man. Gris Gris bag slipped by me and glad to get the heads up being from CA my entire life. I agree with you about the chicken bile lyric however it is the words which preceed it "taught me the mojo style" so slick. WOW. Not a Tom Petty die-hard but this is a good sound.

  • "sucked and weaned on chicken bile"... what a lyric. This and Bootleg Flyer are my favs, but the whole cd is well worth the price. I love the fact that Petty no doubt used his influence and musical "muscle" to force this band's material back out into circulation. They should've made it the first time around, but I guess alot of that wasn't their own doing. Timing, a little luck, and a record company who doesn't have their head up their ass can sometimes decide what happens to real talent.

  • Hey jbownzino, you just proved you know nothing about guitar players by saying that Slash is gimmicky. Cambell is great, but I think you have to listen to some more of Slash's licks more closely, .......you tube some of his solos were he is just messing around in the studio

  • slash is no more innovative then cc deville of poison and jimmy page of zeppelin. my point was that campbell is never mentioned with these people, and has done more for the evolution of rock music then slash ever will

  • Now your gonna talk smack about Page,...wow you do no nothing of guitar players.

  • Used to love Slash but i think all that Guitar Hero s*%t's gone to his or his manager's head. Slash is great but has only been really great in about 5 albums whereas the Great Mike Campbell been doing it for over 30 years. Love his style and sound.

  • are you smoking crack jimmy page of zeppelin blows these cats away dude

  • Its like Comparing Apples to Oranges!!!

Petty controls alot of the music. Look at Mike Play in this video. ARE YOU TRYING TO TELL US THAT HE COULDNT DO WHAT PAGES DOES IN A DIFFERENT SETTING?

Nice try RaffaJay. They are both talented!

  • i think mike's as good as page, and be sure i love both; they just play different styles. but try listen to the heartbreakers' version of "oh well", i think the solo sounds alot like jimmy page

  • Majic pedals that make you wail

  • Can any out there tell me what pedals they think Cambell is using ? Sounds like perhaps a small amount of delay, it sounds pretty lean but has a nice thick metallic feel ... unreal in my book ....

  • Look at Tom Leadons face when campbell does his 2nd solo-awe!!!!

  • campbell is above all of those gimmicky guitarists like slash in my book, he is so underrated.

  • Dead on Brother

  • Said it before and I will say it again-Campbell is just so smooth on leads. He makes it look effortless and is sadly never mentioned when they discuss the GREATS

  • i heard this on the radio about a year ago and ive been looking for this song ever since. I only new the lyric (i didnt know what a presumably "By-You" was xD) I finally found it because of a Creedence Clearwater Revival song.

Thank you CCR and thank you Mudcrutch.

  • It just brings tears to my eyes it's so damm good .How in the hell could they have broke these guys up , record companies are lame ! This is better than anything I have heard from Tom Petty thanks Tom for having the class to bring these guys back and show there stuff , sorry it took so long .

  • Best solo ever

  • Great song, top album, magnificent guitar playing.

  • THIS is Rock n Roll

  • NEVER STOP MAKIN MUSIC

  • Saw Petty and the boys starting out in 77. I said it then and believe it now-Mike Campbell might be the best lead guitarist nobody ever heard of!!!!

  • great song from the Byrd...love it ...got it on an old LP

    Nice post

  • Didn't we all go right out and get those glasses?

  • Damn they got alot of guitars

  • i play piano everyday to be as good as benmont the beast one day

  • No pressure, then. The man is a genius. Good luck with that.

  • you get no argument from me on that one, but it's ok to set goals, is it not?

  • Absolutely! It was a genuine expression of encouragement. I just hope that I've got such conviction.

  • Glad to see that I'm not the only one who notices the keyboards! I absolutely love the keyboard part here. I only wish I could find the music. I know I couldn't play it like Benmont, but it would be fun to try.

  • Они прекрасны!

  • tom petty kicks ass!

  • this is origanlly a Byrds song if nobody knew. but i think petty and the boys here did it better. nice job =]

  • Reminds me of Bob Dylan with this song.

  • Great song.

  • its tom and mike how can it be better, i like tom on the bass

  • I love Tom Petty and always will!

I saw him in concert and he rocks!

  • this is the best stuff in the world besides neil young

  • In my opinion ,there is good material in that album, especially the covers of the traditional "Shady Grove" and the Flying Burrito Brothers "Six Days On The Road". and The live Ep is even better, but just 4 songs..

  • Mudcrutch was the original Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Recently all the original members + 1 have got back together.

  • this is what was supposed to happen instead of the "heartbreakers"

  • This is amazing!

This is one of the best Bob Dylan tracks I have ever heard. You know what I mean?
