does anyone know where i can find the original Lead belly version of this song? i can only find the lyrics online and i'd like to listen to it. thanks(:
This is nice, it really is, but the highest paid actor in the world, who happens to be a Etonian, CANNOT SELL THE BLUES. He plays Swanee River on Steinway.
I really like Hugh Laurie and I'm sure he feels the music but the blues are from a certain context and understood and felt that way. Hugh Laurie makes it into a genre.... takes the piss, just a bit.
@derdriui true he's not really portraying himself, he's pushin it a bit, especially considering he's not amazing at singing blues anyway :P he still earns my respect though
@00gazvanim Hugh Laurie is fckin rich... But that doesnt have nothing to do with selling the blues. U can be just as sad and gloomy being rich. Besides great blues singers ussually have enough money to go by dont you think? If u think blues is about being poor its not.
@derdriui The Blues context is not just a cultural or economic one it is also emotional. Hugh has often said that the Blues, the old Blues of the South, have made him laugh and made him cry. While there are many comics who have come out of Cambridge and many actors who have attended Eton, I wonder how many Etonians have gone on to be alternative comedians like Hugh did? I can see how the Blues could appeal to an individual like HL. His success doesn't mean he isn't qualified to play the Blues.
@derdriui then black folks can't play rock. Sorry but it's a really silly argument, makes no sense whatsoever. Follow it to it's logical conclusion and what... noone can perform music that doesn't match their socio-political background? What a horrible world that sounds like. Fantastic album.
Hugh's talents never end. Been a fan for years... I'm not old enough to have been around when he was doing Fry & Laurie, Blackadder etc but my parents have the DVDs so yeah.... he's really good! I loveeee this song =]
was just listening to BBC2 and this came on - I KNEW it HAD to be on You Tube ! SHARED on FB :-)
AWESOME !! I saw him talk with Craig Ferguson about this album - I hope Craig has him on the show as a guest musician - That would be BEYOND AWESOME !!
I don`t know why, but every time I hear this song it makes me think of Humbert Humbert and Lolita..

osimares2003 9 months ago
@osimares2003 You don't need a "blues voice" to sing blues, you need to sing in tune and sing with feeling
