  • After The Animals performance, this is truly amateurish in comparison.

  • RIP Jimmy..

  • they've said in interviews that during this era, they couldn't hear themselves at all in concert.

  • rays guitar

  • Just one more thing about this video - Pete Quaife's reaction to being presented that... (is it a goblet? Small trophy?) prize (6:05) was awesome (and apparently Mick Avory agreed).

  • Pete is rocking! aaaaaaah

  • Omg! Pete!...Cute!!!!!!!!!!! *-*

  • Lamentablemente la 1ra Guitarra The Kinks no amplifica bien su guitarra, debio haber cogido la de su hermano que era la tenia mejor sonido para que la 1ra Guitarra pueda hacer notar su presencia.

  • A bit rough but I absolutely love their energy in this performance! Timeless songs and great clothes :-)

  • Peter Quaife's pitch perfect!

  • Who's the guy in the stereotypical Chinese garb?

  • @Staszu13 BBC Radio DJ Jimmy Saville

  • @alonenjersey JIm'll Fix it for youuuuuu

  • The sound for most artists on this concert was very good and clear but the kinks sound badly out of tune even without monitors most groups in those days could still pull off a half decent performance. PS I'm a big fan of the Kinks

  • K I N K S forevah!!!

  • I always loved the Kinks. The great ones!!!!

  • aw man it sucks they ran runner up to the rolling stones!!! they are nothing compared to the kinks!!!

  • I always loved those stage costumes from 64-66. But what's with the white socks?

  • @alonenjersey The alleged "cool folks" hadn't decided they were uncool then

  • @Staszu13 Gotcha. It had been in my head for a while. Thanks alot.

  • What is Mick Avory laughing at?

  • Peter Quaife Was So Cute And So Was Mick,Dave And Ray I Love The Kinks!

  • My god...did the audience really think that Jimmy Saville was funny????

  • epic rock pose 1:28

  • The sound man was probably hoping the Kinks didn't get him after this concert .

  • Avant garde punk, that's what it is !!!!

  • Is someone doing a voice over? this is hilarious..

  • haha Pete, he accidentaly got the lead microphone

  • They couldn't hear themselves that's why the bass player went so hight pitch hahahh But they were great anyway! Even the drummer had a smirk like he wanted to laugh! LOVE THE KINKS***********

  • Beautiful!

  • That was horrible. They are out of tune!

  • @perkygirl100 yeah-it IS pretty rough-BUT b4 we hang poor Pete out ta dry, let's

keep in mind that PA's were pretty primitive in the UK at this point- there are NO

vocal monitors. And believe me( I speak from experience) it is pretty damn hard to

sing in tune when you can't hear yerself! Also-looks like these bands are running

out, pluggin' in, no sound check ( I 'd be surprised if there was a SoundMAN)

Some mics are not up in the mix- it's a tough situation. Even Ray is flat sometimes.

  • Ray looks nice Telecaster

  • Dave's mic isn't on. His vocals are supposed to mix with Quaife's; poor Pete was left out to dry. Dave's guitar is barely audible, too. Check out the Shindig clip of the same song, which is also recorded live. That is what the Kinks could do. There is not another clip on Youtube of the Kinks that sounds this bad.

  • Mick´s just great... so "Charliewattsish" ! I believe he´s even more sympathetictahn the old Wattsie...

    Kinks!

  • can anybody tell me who the drummer is on this concert? Is it Mick Avory}?

  • @abacab1 Yes!

  • @abacab1 Yes, that's Mick.

  • I always loved the stage outfits. Except for the white socks.

  • The Kinks along with the Small Faces were a group of Mods who became a band at the time not manufactured into Mods from a band !! I am the biggest Who fan but they were moulded by Pete Meaden RIP. The Kinks were the Genuine thing... Pete also rode a Vespa GS !!

  • 2:12 to 2:15 very brief but pete was cool as f**k!

  • Peter qualife after ray says something at 2:07. lol

  • They really had very poor PA system... No monitors.... Bloody filthy backup vocals...

Just look at Ray Davies face when Pete comes in... LoL.. There amps were intermitting too... People loved them!

  • no auto tune back in the day..lol

  • you know.. some say that the Kinks would be like the beatles if the were supported comercially by the music companies... what do you think?

  • wait a minute! runner up award...best new group? who took first? Petula Springfield?

  • First Hard Rock song

  • @TheSickness14 No no no...

  • @KoivuTheHab NO!?!?

  • @TheSickness14 Thats right, this has nothing to do with hard rock... Hard rock is for faggots anyways.

  • Just like 45 years later, and he is getting the crowd clapping and singing at Glastonbury, just like the beginning here, this guy never changes

  • Damn. Dave Davie's background vocals sound like a chicken having an orgasm.

  • @dubbly1

it's actually Pete, I think he and Ray were supposed to switch microphones

  • @dubbly1 too bad they couldn't of had his guitar up as far as his mic. Totally missed out on that scorcher of a solo. but I get the feel that all the acts at these great NME things were more or less thrown up onstage take it or leave it style . ...real beat history here though.

  • Does Ray say "Sorry we're late" or "Sorry 'bout that"?

  • I like this song, but they are terrible live! At least here...

  • Mick is smiling

  • Glorious Mono!! I love it.

  • I like his voice on this one, I hope I fing the others ones I'm looking for,

  • @kinksboss1 YES! Absolutely YES!

  • 1:30...the very first punk rock scene ever filmed

  • love all my Kinks-records

  • is this the first punk song in the history of rock i wonder?

  • @stubbyguy There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever. I like All Day And All Of The Night better, however, the pioneer songs of the hard rock movement to come...

  • we are getting the sound straight from the mixer but I'm sure it sounded different if you were standing there.

  • PUNK !!!! before it was punk

  • this is just a really bad mix, probably from a mixing desk , that's why daves guitar is way down, he probably has his amp cranked and not a lot of p.a. send

i assure you a poor mix, well this poor at least, will make your legends all sound bad lol

that's why bands spend months mixing albums hahaha

ps i am not knocking the kinks lol

  • Shame!..something went badly wrong !

  • They sound & act like they were partying too much before this show. Correct me I'f I'm wrong

  • ray`s guitar was to loud and dave`s wasnt loud enough:P

  • kind of bad sound

  • Yeah that was Quaife blowing out one majorly high "Pepperpot" note, Dave's cracking up over it. It murdered me too when I first heard it, Ray and Dave were fine.

  • I think Ray and Pete got the mikes they were supposed to use mixed up

  • "Runner-Up in the Best New Group section"!

Like to see the list of bands that played that show.

    Thanks!

  • @conspiracy ..What do you expect its 1965 not Madison Square Garden 76

  • Rays guitar5s way to loud you cant hear the solo and peter quaifes vocals hurt other than that brill

  • whoooooooaaaaaahhhhhhh!

  • Peter Quaife's back-up vocals... OUCH!!!

  • Too right. But noone in any doubt that it's live unlike today with Brittany Spears.

  • @crankthemid I'm pretty sure those are Dave's background vocals. Mick looks over at Dave, not Pete and they sound like Dave.

  • @crankthemid I think it could aslo be just a very bad mix as was usual in them days!

  • @crankthemid Peter's backups? What about Ray's WHITE SOCKS? :)

  • @crankthemid I think Peter is supposed to be singing high harmony with Dave, but for some reason Dave's mic is too low so we only hear Peter. When he is singing with Ray on Tired of Waiting he's hardly audible. Too bad they didn't sing into the same mic. It would have been a lot different I think.

  • this song is so very awesome! pure rock & roll!

  • awesome Ray and Dave , fab

  • If I could only go back to yesterday-I was just a baby during this historic concert. Born too late. :-(

Thanks ever so much for sharing! ♫

  • I love the jangly sound of Ray Davies' guitar.. yeah, he's a bit too loud here, but I like it.

  • Y DONT THESE MOTHERFUCKERS TOUR ANYMORE ?...arent' the brothers still alive?..

  • I think Dave is still recovering from a stroke suffered several years ago. Not to mention the fact that Dave and Ray used to have rows (fights) when touring. Would love to see it though.

  • Oasis have row of fights and they still tour. I LOVE THE KINKS!

  • Dave is doing a short tour in February, 2010 in New York and LA-He is doing much better

  • Yeah they're alive only problem is Dave Davis had a stroke and I'm not sure if he's well enough to tour, although it would be nice.

  • I was four years old. Boy would I have loved to have been older. This is such a great period in music history.

  • LOL! Only Ray Davies would apologize to the audience for being late and then break into "So Tired of Waiting for You".

  • No doubt, No Kinks No youth.

Every song is in my heart.

Sometimes I sit on my porch and watch my homeranch, look at my horses, I have some country on my MP 3.

    Dale Watson or so.

    Nice.

But when I hear The Kinks, .....

    Memory's.

  • Pete, take one step back from the mike...

  • yea, the high harmony is way to hot....and flat..

sounds like it's straight from the board.

thanks for the post......what a great band!

  • Yes, the high harmony surprised me. I think Dave was taking Rasa's (Ray's wife) part. He didn't do this on the Kelvin Hall version.

  • Thank God. I thought Tiny Tim had sneaked into the stage.

  • Gapped toothed and white socked

    Ray Davies is God!

  • Is that Jimmy Saville doing the intro?

  • yeah it is :)

  • Thanks!

  • i would loved to have been at this concert: beatles, stones, kinks, donovan - awesome!

  • Ray's guitar in the break sounding a bit Joe Strummer there!

  • You people bittchin about sound should read a short history of live sound & recording techniques of "this" period. First off, the guitar amps are NOT miked...just vocals!

  • was anyone even at the sound desk? all the levels are mixed up

  • Great Band!

  • Man, they (not kinks) recordet the sound really bad...

  • Take note that this was 1965 :P

  • So? Ther knew how to record sound in 50's. this are 60's and They messed up this concert.

  • Yeah but thats in proper recording studios, this is live done by a magazine

  • The first radio mics have been around since late 40s early 50s but one of the first performers to use a modern headset was Kate Bush in 1979 not sure about wireless guitars but Ray is def playing live and I see no leads!

  • You are Correccccct! but They are using leads, check 1:31 you see his lead there =o

  • I'm so used to seeing wireless guitars-it's a wonder the musicians in those days didn't trip over all the wires, and cables.

This performances makes me nostalgic for an age I can't even remember. sigh..

  • check the beginning when Ray pulls on the lead to get more slack

  • Page doubled up Ray's guitar trackings. Fatter sound. The leads were always Dave. Shel never miked Mick correctly. Imagine them recording at Western or United in '65 with a Snuff Garrett or Lou Adler in the booth in Hollywood.

  • They were playing live, that was the transmitter Ray put in his pocket.

  • Vox was just starting to market wierless and this show may have been the first use..

  • The sound quality on this is terrible (no fault of nyrainbow2!). The Kinks didn't normally sound like this.

The band just got back from a disastrous show in Denmark, which ended up with the police goose-stepping into the concert hall and whipping the kids up into a frenzy, ending in a riot for which the Kinks got blamed. Dave ended up in a brawl and thrown into jail. Flights ended up having to be rearranged. It's amazing they ended up at the NME show at all!

  • ok this band's leading vocals were never great, but god what backing vocals in this video...with all the respect it makes me laugh..!

  • nothing wrong with Ray's vocals

  • The Kinks were always dodgy performers live, but their energy made up for it. As for the bad sound, live sound technology was far behind recording technology in 1965, and EVERYONE sounded bad in concert, including the Beatles. Malfunctioning mikes, harmony vocals mixed louder than the lead, lead guitar drowned out by the rhythm, too much or too little bass, tinny drum sound. Onstage monitors hadn't been invented yet, so the band couldn't hear themselves over the screaming fans.

  • I love the Kinks but was surprised at how out of tune this sounded. It was either the 65 or 66 NME convect where the Who stormed off and didn't come back on until their gear was installed as Roger Daltrey complained about the sound... read this somewhere.

  • i never noticed how bad they were

  • Are you kidding me i've seen these guys in concert a few times they did'nt sound like this shit had to be sabotage and Marvy Dave Davies does'nt need anybody to play guiter for him

  • great backup vocals right?

  • You think the sound man for that concert was hoping the Kinks didn't get him .

  • Now I know why Jimmy Page had to play the guitar parts on their albums.

  • He didn't really. That's an urban legend.

  • The drummer looks like he's smiling because it is so awful.

  • It is awful, I'm not even sure it qualifies as a solo. Pretty sure Dave did the solos on the album. For whatever reason, it's Ray wanking around with a telecaster here though.

  • jimmy was in various of the Kinks recordings, there is still some controversy on what he played, but something is sure, he was there when hard rock was born.

  • The sound qualitiy isn't great, but if it was better, these groups would kick ass. I love the 60's. It feels so modern to me. Doesn't feel old or nothing. I grew up in the 80's and 90's but this era feels so right for me. Even in like 81 when I wasn't even old enough to be cool, I u sed to love the comercials or whenever they'd show some performance or show from the 60's. I just wanted to be in that time.

  • The crowd just about went out of control at 0:16.

  • that's what an unflattering live mix and no monitors will do for you !

no drums, no bass, hardly any guitar- just a lot of badly mixed vocal!

  • Boy does that perfromance suck. LOL. Time to work on the harmonies guys.

  • yes, singinging is hard job,lol

  • Dave at 1:30 is priceless

  • raw, authentic, rock-pop, great stuff

  • Runners-up for best new band??? Who won??? They deserved the award!!!

  • The Rolling Stones won for best new group but for the second year in a row! The Kinks never forgave the NME for that.

  • check out Ray's disappointed shrug @ 5:59

  • God save the kinks, the only band that matters! - Frank Lima, the Montvale New Jersey Hillbilly Boy aka Dan the Fan

  • Yeah live is much more realistic even with certain imperfections compared to mimimg to the studio recorded version. This is real and would have been awesome to be there back in the day.Go Kinks!!!

  • How come the camera wasn't on Dave during the solo to "You Really Got Me"?!

  • because you couldnt hear it

  • I've always loved the "fat-bottom" bass by Rickenbacher.

  • kinks were the best band in the 60s they changed the curse of rock n roll just love them so much. its in my opinion that their best but all others are great stuff too.

  • yes its great but the guy who sing second voice is terrible in this performance. but its great.

  • For whatever reason Pete Quaife's mic is on much louder than Ray's.

  • Thanks for this... I like LIVE even with crummy mixes.

But Ray is singing a bit flat/sharp on TIRED OF WAITING, but it's cool.

  • Isn't it written that way? I always thought it was, by design.

  • HERE, HERE, BEATBANDS... WELL SAID!!

  • The Kinks, inventors of the NEW sound.

  • you simply cannot tell me this is not pure musical talent! this bubble-gum, no substance crap kids produce today and call music cannot even stand in the same relm as these great musicians. by the way... if you asked these same candy-coated kids of today that think what they have is a distinguished sound.. they will tell you that there influences are the great-late musicians of the 60's. tell me...someone... why cant music past 1985 sound this good!? i just cant figure it out.....

  • A question that I have posed to myself.I think maybe because British rock/pop was relatively new back then and things were fresh with a lot of enthusiasm.I hardly listen to anything post 1985.

  • 85 dude? just about 80 and on everyband was terrible

  • I would disagree. IMHO, the early years of MTV, 1981-1985, with music videos, was the 2nd best period ever for rock and roll.

  • C'mon people, stop being so stodgy, there's been plenty of good pop music through to the present, since '80-'85 you mention. U2, Beck, The Shins, Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure, The Smiths, 311, Green Day, Nirvana, STP, Bat For Lashes, etc.

Of course '55 to '80/'85 is the major ground breaking revolutionary period. How much more music can there be, that isn't just rehash, that is also stuff we really like?

  • It's great to see this live footage in beautiful b&w! I love Ray's white socks and Dave "Guitar God" Davies snarling when he starts delivering those power chords.

  • Thats interesting.Nobody shows socks anymore, everyone wears their trousers too long.Lets bring back ankle swingers!

  • THEY ARE COOL JUST LOVE EMM

  • they were all way to the 90s 60-90s

  • how does dave davies always manage to get that incredibly tinny sound.its just awesome.

  • Despite the technical imperfections The Kinks put on a great powerful and raw performance.

Lighten up people.....it was just 1965....

  • Lol they were tripping over their equipment at 0:27

  • All these NME performances have poor mixes.

  • Seems like Ray got the louder amp, cause Dave can't be heard at all at times.

  • Luv the Kinks no matter what the sound was like. grew up playing Well Respected Man til my fingers hurt Thx Marina

  • Ray Davies probably wanted to strangle whoever set up the sound system for that concert .

  • yes, all performers sounded not their best at that concert (except the Animals. Eric Burdon was awesome :)

  • To highpoint211: Even if its bad, they were still LIVE, which was a rarity for bands in the 60s
