well i have seen vids where both the .223 performed perfectly, case in this video, and where it took someone 4 shots with his AR to put his doe down, as soon as the bullet hit her rib cage they fragmented, causing massive damage and ALOT of wasted meat, never did get an answer on what type of bullet or grain he was using, but i plan on using my DPMS this season, however will be using the federal fusion 70GR .223 should work just fine
@1gamoguy We used federal 55 grain boat tail hollow points to take this three deer. They did fragment quite a bit. So we have switched to using 55 grain soft nose or core lokts
awesome shooting, any way you could post a small video review on the box of ammo, what the rounds look like, it would be great i want to buy some for next hunting season.
Even with big Maine whitetails, the .223 works fine. Wish I had more experience than taking only one but works fine. It's the so called "hunter" more than the caliber. Some people dont belong in the woods with ANY fucking caliber at ALL. Even with the sizes reached here.....anything .22(mag) or other .22 centerfire.
Ever wish you were apart of a family? How cool is it that the Dad and son have such a good relationship? Really great video guys, I'm going to be using my Mini 14 tomorrow hunting.
@ drewnickel- you're a fucking liar. You don't hunt whitetails here with a 177 cal. You stated elsewhere you live here in Tn, and that there is an air rifle season for big game- another lie. Post the video, sir. We REAL deer hunters want to see it! Ill be sure to forward it to TWRA....
Awesome Kills: Glad to see others know how proficient the 223 rifle actually is at taking Whitetail deer other than myself. However, It's not so much the rifle but the bullet that kills the animal. I use the new 60gr DRT ammo or the Blackhills 60gr soft points and never had a deer go further than 10 yards. I've shot deer with 30-06's in the heart that have gone over 100 yards before dropping. It's been my experience the 223 actually does far more internal damage than the big bores.
All you guys talking about shooting 55gr+ you got to know your BBL twist if you have a 1:12 it's going to turn end over end and not hit what your shooting at 1:8-1:9 62gr is the max and 1:7 can take the 62gr+ your good to go
i have a custom made ar-15 .223. Its my favorite. But hell, i'll kill a deer with a .22 magnum, doesnt matter to me one way or another. nice video though.
I see allot of blabling here from kids that don't have a clue what their talking about .
I have used my AR in Alaskan and in Oregon for Moose - Deer - Black bears- Caribou, when loaded with hand loads with 60 or 70 grain Barns x the 223 gets the job done !
@troutfisher14 no, you can kill a deer with any caliber, if you've got good shot placement you can use a smaller caliber, but the worse your aim is the bigger the gun you'll need to make sure that it dies quickly. I hunt medium to large game with my .177 cal air rifle and at 1500fps, it'll kill anything short of a bear. I dont take a shot unless I know it'll hit and I always stalk to within 25ft of my intended animal before I take the shot. I have never once had an animal suffer, all died quick
@Adrian8222 the 223 is used to cull animals around the world if you dont recover the animal it becuase you fucked up.......truth hurts but shoot stright and youll bring home meat every time
nice, the 223 is fine, look at the kids that use them. not gonna give them a gun that i cant kill one with. even though there eyes may give the advantage to the kids.Age dont cange the performance of the round, shot placement, ar15s i love to shoot em

Leading to a larger/longer wound cavity. Happy hunting!
people say .223 isn't gun enough for deer, but i reckon this is down to the fact that .223 is usually used for fox's and other vermin where a high expanson bullet is used .
there is definatley enough power in them to stop deer , just need a bullet that holds it's expansion a little longer so it can get through them
@sfranklin0440 if you're shooting deer with it don't use hig expansion varmint bullets as they sometimes don't get into the vitals befor expanding and losing all thier energy , look for controlled expansion bullets , then you're good to go
@a3300000 I was clearly talking about animals, nutcase. And I never did say that it couldn't kill me, if you take more than 2-3 shots. That damn FMJ will go right through without expansion, and leave a tiny ass wound channel that is pencil thin. A 7.62 on the other hand will leave you lifeless in a single shot.
@homeostasis4me If your bullets tumble when they leave your rifle than you have one hell of a messed up rifle, the grooves and rifling are there for a reason so the bullet doesn't tumble. And even if it did, what's the length of that bullet?? .3 inches?? What the hell is that gonna do? and if the bullet tumbles, it will lose all of its speed and do nothing.
@NoubzHunter Ummm...(ahem). The .223 is designed to "cant", or in layman's terms TUMBLE, after meeting this funny thing called RESISTANCE like....say... FLESH. Or Dihydro Monoxide, AKA water. The .223 and the 5.56 mm are not designed to tumble after leaving the barrel, Ace. They are designed to "cant" once they ENTER the TARGET, such as, you know....a person. Or a deer. Google before commenting.............
anyone dissing these guys for hunting with a .223....well guess what, they don't feel the need to compensate for other things with a shoulder cannon, they obviously know the value of one well-placed shot. I have many hunting rifles, among them a.45-70, a .308 and a .270 wsm, but I'm planning on getting a .223 just because I like the cartridge. Nicely done recruit71, keep up the accurate shooting!
The .223 is underestimated i think. Sure its a small cartridge but its got a muzzle velocity at over 3000fps. Team that with a bullet that tumbles or breaks apart after impact and you get a pretty dam effective round
NO offence but the object of hunting isnt to see what is the smallest caliber you can kill something with. I mean im not gonna go out and shoot an elk with a22-250 just because if I hit it in the eye it will go down....use something with enough power to consistantly make clean kills. I think it sucks ass that I have to go to war with that pussy caliber, BTW...congrats on the 3 kills though!
@pafbff None taken. At the time we didn't have any big caliber hunting rilfes. We currently hunt with a .308. And in my opinion, the objective to hunting is to provide food by obtaining a kill by any means. And of course a good soft nose or hollow point helps when using a .223.
@pafbff bwhahaha another mall ninja...if you think the 5.56(223) isnt a capable round you are stupid....and trust me..i know for a fact that you have never been, and will never go to war...hope this helps tough guy..
@pafbff obviosuly if you were in the military you would know the purpose of the 5.56/.223. its not meant to be the most powerful round there is because any soldier knows once you have about 7-10 mags with you full of 5.56/.223 its not the lightest but its lighter than having 7-10 mags full of 7.62 or any other caliber so thats one plus for the 5.56/.223 and another thing is the 5.56/.223 is light recoiled which allows you to shoot more accurately and put an average 3-4 rounds in one person
@bmetstud These three deer were taken by an AR platform. It is effective but I would recomend a bigger caliber. Hunting with the .223 is all about shot placement and good marksmanship skills. If you dont hit the sweet spot, your deer will die, after it runs a few hundred yards.
@recruit71 I hunt with a .177 caliber air rifle, there is no room for error with that small of a caliber, the only reason I hunt with it is because theres an air rifle hunting season now (technically for .40 cal and above) but I dont hunt deer yet. right now it's smaller game, but I intend on proving that nomatter the caliber, any gun with sufficient penetrating power can be used to hunt deer. my pellet gun shoots at 1500fps btw so yes it is always a clean kill, I aim behind the ear.
If you will notice, that during firefights in Iraq the Iragi's "spray and pray" with their AK's, and most the tike they have 30 round mags and are in full auto. We aim and shoot, mostly single shots, with some 3 shit bursts if needed. Where do you get that we are in full auto mode all the time? Go watch a video and listen.
how does one person shoot three deer in oregon u can have a buck tag and a doe tag if u can get a doe tag other than that if you shoot three 1 is considered poached and that is illegal
here in canada its illegal to kill three deer at once..im pretty sure? and its illegal to use anything under .243 i dont like that law..but what are your laws where you shot those??
biggest buck i took, was with a mini14 in .223. was just one shot, at about 150 feet, about 50 yards, and the buck ran for 2 seconds, made it about 50 feet from where i shot it. nontypical 19 point buck. 261 pounds. lung shot.
You know what, I wont hunt deer or boar with my .223 because I don't want the possibility of wounding them and them getting away (and having a horrible death). I use 30-30, 30-06, or 308.
Doe are legal to kill in your state? Don't know how prevalent they are where you are, but I always leave doe so the population can replenish itself quickly.
I also have to say dude, why do you and your dad have them hanging by their necks? That is not the proper way to prep them for skinning and quartering
@pantadon im not sure if you have noticed yet but most hunters dont go by the book anymore and hang it "the right way". i dont hang my deer that way and im not saying there is nothing wrong with hanging it by the neck.
I would not recomend taking a deer with a .223 if your a bad shot. Hunting with a .223 is all about shot placement. Doe are legal to kill in our state. There are far too many of them around here. We hang them from the neck because it allowed us to gut and process them quicker. Slit them down the middle and the guts more less fall out with ease thanks to gravity. In all reality, it doesnt matter which way you hang them.
@Bly86 Yeah we normaly do. But he killed these three less than a 100 yards from our house. It just seemed easier to get the tractor and get to cutting. lol
@Bly86 good advice haha i found that out.. one i did straight away taste awesome. the one i did at home 3 hours later the dog all most spews trying to swallow it. its not that bad but u get the point. best to drop the guts asap
Very cool, I just purchased a AR-15, didn't really know if I could go deer hunting with a .223, now i know. Just waiting on the 10 day waiting period that California gives us.
headphones , you seriously aren't contimplating moose hunting with a .223. unless your going to shoot it from 5yards away. that moose could seriously turn around and kill you before its adrenaline ran out.
300 yards is pushing it in my opinion. Yes, the round will shoot that far but I would not recomend shooting a deer with a 223 at 300 yards. You might want to use a larger caliber, such as a 270, 30 06, or 308. If your going to use a 223, I would keep my your shots under 200 yards.
barrel destruction? This is true with early models. Models made after 1970's or so, do not have this problem due to higher quality steel. Shot hundreds of rounds thru my Swift, Still shoots dime sized groups @ 100 yrds. As for penetration, 220 swift has alot more energy than the .223. Check your ballistics. .220 swift 1645 lbs/ft @ muzzle, 1280 lbs/ft @100yrds. .223 1291 lbs/ft muzzle, 987 lbs/ft @100 yrds. ( Both with 50gr.)
Headphones. I like shooting smaller acurate calibers like the .243 win or 270 win at small size game like whitetails. They work great. However I've taken two moose in the past and both times I used a 300 win mag. A moose is a lot bigger then most people think and you'll have a hell of a time getting him out of the woods if he gets to run. Also as big as the moose is and as big as his head looks the brain area is only the size of a grape fruit.
i shot my first 2 deer here in Texas with a .223 using federal's Nosler partition. first shot, first time to ever shoot a real gun. took out both of it's front knee caps, had to make a neck shot for the final kill. then the next day shot a trophy 8pt. that is on my wall right now.
A buddy of mine killed a big buck and a doe with his .223 savage predator. Shot placement is all it takes. A shot to the lungs heart is always deadly.
A male deer or "buck" has a rack of antlers. Each spike on the rack is called a point. The more points on a rack the better. If a buck has 10 points or more its considered a good trophy buck
the 223 is so under estimated. the round was designed for killing out to 500 yards. last year I killed a muly buck at 420 yards with a 75 grain wolf amuniition. double lung shot, went 10 yards, and dropped. 223 is a human killer out to 500, and deer are really close to humans when you think about the bones, and muscles that has to be penetrated. even down to the hide.
i use a 300 mag as u can see by my user name but my wife uses a 223 and it works great she killed a huge doe with it last season it died less than thirty yards away i shot a 9 point and he died right there so either extreme works great
great vid ur right 223 with right bullet will kill whitetail no prob. at 500 yd that might be a little different. try federal ammo loaded with barns tsx bullets. that will do it.
yea i hunt on my corn fields here in Illinois and you have to use a larger round to drop a white tail. you have to be able to drop them at 500 yards or further. I was hunting once with my mini 14 and i put 2 rounds in the rib cage and it just trotted off and i couldn't bag it, maybe they didn'yt hit anything but idk.....
you were using a rifle in illinois? oooh. bad boy! lol jk. i would too. but just wondering, can you use a muzzleloader during the illinois gun season?
oh and if u have a god damn problem come over here to big sky country Montana and i will show u how to hunt here stop trying to give peolpe advise about hunting that is what fathers and grandfathers are for
hey petevn do u know what they put in that kind of meat... u know that u can save money hunting your food. and yes i am a hunter i have a 7mm rem mag sighted in at 300 yards for moose and elk. know how am i not a hunter know what your talking about before you type.
this video is not what hunting is all about! just shooting to fill the freezer is not what this sport is! thats why hunters get a bad name? hunting is not about the freezer but about the exsperience with your comrads and kids so you have something to talk about years down the road not how many does you shot for hamburger! be sure to pass down the pictures of your hamburgure to your grandchildren so they can shear them with there freinds at school or maybe a family reunion? thanks Pete
Listen. If you had three tags and had a chance to kill three deer. Would you pull the trigger? Also. We dont turn our deer into hamburger. We also share extra with our neighbors, family, and friends. And yes, this particular hunt will be talked about for years. I hunt very often and I know what its about. You must remember, hunting was a way of life and survival before it was ever a "sport" as you call it.
how can u even brag about shooting does?????????? and ill bet youll be the first to complain about next year, that you didnt see any deer??????????? did you relize 1 doe is 100 deer in ten years?? you yourself said it best on your last comment---- killed the family ??????? think about it!!!!!!!!! buy beef and give up killing the family or there will be none left!!!!!!
The area we hunt is over populated with does. There is a reason why we choose to kill them over bucks. And you must know that over population results to disease and a break down in genetics. Which results in smaller and un healthy deer. So please, go eat your beef.
where are you hunting? i'm sure your problem can be taken care of within one year if there is a over population in your area??????? give me a call, if not! i do have extra rounds and i just bought a new ar15 223, so i could help you out with over-population!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 9208191144
watching this bullshit doese'nt make it any more easier to even consider shooting does!!!!!!!!!!!! you are full of it! do not cry about no deer!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i know you will, remember what i told you! you can not lie to yourself or anyone else with a brain??????????????????? think about it!!!!!!!!
If your logic is correct then why did the Department of conservation supply 3 ANY deer permits. Meat in the freezer is the primary goal in deer season.
Not legal in California, where .243 is the smallest caliber legal for deer. But yes, with proper shot placement, a 223 will dang sure fill the freezer. And when the rubber hits the road, that's what it's about.
Now, wave some steaks over the coals, and let's eat some venison! 8^)
hunting videos where they shoot from great distance or are more concerned about making a video instead of bleeding the animal as soon as possible.a shot through the hart is not enough! It is allso better to hang them upside down. Believe me, try it and you'll see the meat is better, more tender and will hold longer. I know most people do it your way but then most do it wrong. I don't know much about hunting but a lot about this.Happy eating.
No we bled them in the field shortly after the kill. We hung them by the kneck becuase it mad it easier for us to process them. Three deer can be a lot of work! lol
I know plenty of guns who have shot big bucks with .223. I have a .224 mini ranch that I use as a brush gun when going through the thick stuff here in oregon.
i just bought a .223 and i have been shoting yotes at 350...and i shot five rabbits...IF YOU cant shoot a gopher...dont hunt...people who hunt need to help the sport not bring it down...DONT COMPLAIN BOUT THE GEAR ITS THE SHOOTER.....
iv been reading all your comments u sound like a bunch of dumb ass amaricans more concerned with your ego then useing common scence.well im sure ill get replies to this but oh well.i also read some guy shot a black bear with a 223..oh ya thats total common scence.i must be bored since im reading all your guys dumb ass comments lol
The video was posted to show that "yes" a .223 can be a good choice in taking white tail deer. I have an AR-15 but I use a 30.30 for white tail. So what I am trying to say is that a .223 or 5.56 is a good multi purpose round. Not every one can afford to buy a diferent rifle for every season.
i hear what your saying.good reply btw.i wouldnt disagree with useing a 223 on smaller deer but if i was hunting a place where a 300 pound buck is posable id leave it in the gun case i think there is better multi purpose rounds 25-06 243 6mm as far as varmit/big game rifle
the 223 is not legal here for big game.yes it will kill on an ideal shot so will a 22 rimfire but hunting doesnt always give u the ideal shot so id def pick a larger cal.and if u do wound a deer atleast u will have a better blood trail to follow the 223 might not
i killed dear with a 223 , so what is the big deal, i have shot them with smaller guns, some times you can blow there hearts plum out with a big gun and they still run off without a heart. i shot one buck down 4 times with a 30-06 he still got away, so some times it depends on the deer some times,
u shot a buck 4 times with a 30-06 and he got away? thats some pretty bad shooting lol and u didnt have a large blood trail to follow?u sure u even hit him? lol
well i have seen vids where both the .223 performed perfectly, case in this video, and where it took someone 4 shots with his AR to put his doe down, as soon as the bullet hit her rib cage they fragmented, causing massive damage and ALOT of wasted meat, never did get an answer on what type of bullet or grain he was using, but i plan on using my DPMS this season, however will be using the federal fusion 70GR .223 should work just fine

@sfranklin0440 I like the Tap rounds also, they make a great duty or personal protection round. But there pretty much a polymer tipped hollow point which prevents in over penetration of bullet. Which isn't bad. I just prefer the cor loks in a .223. .223 hollow points rapidly expand and fragment on impact. The core loks will mushroom and maintain bullet integrity after impact. Hey Noubzhunter, you bad mouth the .223,but I would be willing to bet that you wouldnt stand in front of one traveling at about 3,000 fps.
a3300000 1 year ago
@a3300000 I was clearly talking about animals, nutcase. And I never did say that it couldn't kill me, if you take more than 2-3 shots. That damn FMJ will go right through without expansion, and leave a tiny ass wound channel that is pencil thin. A 7.62 on the other hand will leave you lifeless in a single shot.
NoubzHunter 1 year ago
@NoubzHunter Um....NO. It will "cant" and tumble (as designed) whilst ripping a channel. Google it, Armchair.
homeostasis4me 1 year ago
@homeostasis4me If your bullets tumble when they leave your rifle than you have one hell of a messed up rifle, the grooves and rifling are there for a reason so the bullet doesn't tumble. And even if it did, what's the length of that bullet?? .3 inches?? What the hell is that gonna do? and if the bullet tumbles, it will lose all of its speed and do nothing.
NoubzHunter 1 year ago
@NoubzHunter Ummm...(ahem). The .223 is designed to "cant", or in layman's terms TUMBLE, after meeting this funny thing called RESISTANCE like....say... FLESH. Or Dihydro Monoxide, AKA water. The .223 and the 5.56 mm are not designed to tumble after leaving the barrel, Ace. They are designed to "cant" once they ENTER the TARGET, such as, you know....a person. Or a deer. Google before commenting.............
homeostasis4me 1 year ago
@NoubzHunter dude part of the reason that the army uses 5.56 is that it tumbles on inpact 7.62 punches through
tbrebel72 2 months ago
anyone dissing these guys for hunting with a .223....well guess what, they don't feel the need to compensate for other things with a shoulder cannon, they obviously know the value of one well-placed shot. I have many hunting rifles, among them a.45-70, a .308 and a .270 wsm, but I'm planning on getting a .223 just because I like the cartridge. Nicely done recruit71, keep up the accurate shooting!
GibsonTick 1 year ago 4
@GibsonTick Thanks!
recruit71 1 year ago
The .223 is underestimated i think. Sure its a small cartridge but its got a muzzle velocity at over 3000fps. Team that with a bullet that tumbles or breaks apart after impact and you get a pretty dam effective round
metalforbeing 1 year ago
You can kill more than one deer a day in Missouri ?
mwillblade 1 year ago
Isnt it ilegal to hunt deer with 223?
battlefield2comb 1 year ago
NO offence but the object of hunting isnt to see what is the smallest caliber you can kill something with. I mean im not gonna go out and shoot an elk with a22-250 just because if I hit it in the eye it will go down....use something with enough power to consistantly make clean kills. I think it sucks ass that I have to go to war with that pussy caliber, BTW...congrats on the 3 kills though!
pafbff 1 year ago 4
@pafbff None taken. At the time we didn't have any big caliber hunting rilfes. We currently hunt with a .308. And in my opinion, the objective to hunting is to provide food by obtaining a kill by any means. And of course a good soft nose or hollow point helps when using a .223.
recruit71 1 year ago 4
@pafbff bwhahaha another mall ninja...if you think the 5.56(223) isnt a capable round you are stupid....and trust me..i know for a fact that you have never been, and will never go to war...hope this helps tough guy..
benchmstr 11 months ago
@pafbff obviosuly if you were in the military you would know the purpose of the 5.56/.223. its not meant to be the most powerful round there is because any soldier knows once you have about 7-10 mags with you full of 5.56/.223 its not the lightest but its lighter than having 7-10 mags full of 7.62 or any other caliber so thats one plus for the 5.56/.223 and another thing is the 5.56/.223 is light recoiled which allows you to shoot more accurately and put an average 3-4 rounds in one person
MxRider710 11 months ago
COOL!!! so how was it hunting with a 223? People say no no, I say BS> this is proof of it. COOL! what do you use? "rifle"ar" nice kills, thanks.
bmetstud 1 year ago
@bmetstud These three deer were taken by an AR platform. It is effective but I would recomend a bigger caliber. Hunting with the .223 is all about shot placement and good marksmanship skills. If you dont hit the sweet spot, your deer will die, after it runs a few hundred yards.
recruit71 1 year ago
@recruit71 I hunt with a .177 caliber air rifle, there is no room for error with that small of a caliber, the only reason I hunt with it is because theres an air rifle hunting season now (technically for .40 cal and above) but I dont hunt deer yet. right now it's smaller game, but I intend on proving that nomatter the caliber, any gun with sufficient penetrating power can be used to hunt deer. my pellet gun shoots at 1500fps btw so yes it is always a clean kill, I aim behind the ear.
drewnickel 11 months ago
If you will notice, that during firefights in Iraq the Iragi's "spray and pray" with their AK's, and most the tike they have 30 round mags and are in full auto. We aim and shoot, mostly single shots, with some 3 shit bursts if needed. Where do you get that we are in full auto mode all the time? Go watch a video and listen.

MLGGatewayGuy 2 years ago
biggest buck i took, was with a mini14 in .223. was just one shot, at about 150 feet, about 50 yards, and the buck ran for 2 seconds, made it about 50 feet from where i shot it. nontypical 19 point buck. 261 pounds.

That is not the proper way to prep them for skinning and quartering
pantadon 2 years ago
@pantadon im not sure if you have noticed yet but most hunters dont go by the book anymore and hang it "the right way". i dont hang my deer that way and im not saying there is nothing wrong with hanging it by the neck.
playajared 2 years ago
I would not recomend taking a deer with a .223 if your a bad shot. Hunting with a .223 is all about shot placement. Doe are legal to kill in our state. There are far too many of them around here. We hang them from the neck because it allowed us to gut and process them quicker. Slit them down the middle and the guts more less fall out with ease thanks to gravity. In all reality, it doesnt matter which way you hang them.
recruit71 2 years ago
Gut em in the woods buddy. The longer that shit stays in there after the heart quits pumping the more your meat is gonna taste like shit.

Very cool, I just purchased a AR-15, didn't really know if I could go deer hunting with a .223, now i know. Just waiting on the 10 day waiting period that California gives us.
Bastellus87 2 years ago
headphones , you seriously aren't contimplating moose hunting with a .223. unless your going to shoot it from 5yards away. that moose could seriously turn around and kill you before its adrenaline ran out.
cavalley1 2 years ago
i got a .223 rem stevens 200 i was thinking about going deer hunting what do you guys think about putting one down at 2to 300 yrds
dills2403 2 years ago
300 yards is pushing it in my opinion. Yes, the round will shoot that far but I would not recomend shooting a deer with a 223 at 300 yards. You might want to use a larger caliber, such as a 270, 30 06, or 308. If your going to use a 223, I would keep my your shots under 200 yards.

i use a 220 swift. 55 gr. HP, Drops in their tracks. Plus, more range than a .223. Oh yeah, 4200 fps helps too.
hedgecockt 2 years ago
also the barrel destruction helps too I suppose?
It doesant penetrate more than the 223.
headphones222 2 years ago
barrel destruction? This is true with early models. Models made after 1970's or so, do not have this problem due to higher quality steel. Shot hundreds of rounds thru my Swift, Still shoots dime sized groups @ 100 yrds. As for penetration, 220 swift has alot more energy than the .223. Check your ballistics. .220 swift 1645 lbs/ft @ muzzle, 1280 lbs/ft @100yrds. .223 1291 lbs/ft muzzle, 987 lbs/ft @100 yrds. ( Both with 50gr.)
hedgecockt 2 years ago
nothing wrong with the .223. But the .220 swift is a much more powerful round.
hedgecockt 2 years ago
not really much more pwerful, depends what game and range.
If I shot a mosse in the head with a .223 it wouldnt matter if it was .220
headphones222 2 years ago
Also as big as the moose is and as big as his head looks the brain area is only the size of a grape fruit.
jonf1023 2 years ago
I am ware, a .300 Win Mag should easily drop a moose.

i shot my first 2 deer here in Texas with a .223 using federal's Nosler partition. first shot, first time to ever shoot a real gun. took out both of it's front knee caps, had to make a neck shot for the final kill. then the next day shot a trophy 8pt. that is on my wall right now.

A buddy of mine killed a big buck and a doe with his .223 savage predator. Shot placement is all it takes. A shot to the lungs heart is always deadly.
Velocity4000fps 2 years ago 2
ya it doesn't mater the caliber, just shot placement, you could even kill a deer with a 22 or a 17 with right shot placement!

what would you say to a .223 nosler ballistic tip bullet for deer? going to northern minnesota this weekend with my new AR.

recruit71 2 years ago
yeah don't feel so bad only time i seen a 10 pointer is on my grandpa's wall. Never even came close to seeing a live one myself lol
larasa007 2 years ago
Nice hunting. I don't mean to ask a dumb question, but what exactly are you two talking about? 8 points and 10 points?
brisson11004 2 years ago
A male deer or "buck" has a rack of antlers. Each spike on the rack is called a point. The more points on a rack the better. If a buck has 10 points or more its considered a good trophy buck
recruit71 2 years ago
I get it now. Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me.
brisson11004 2 years ago
the 223 is so under estimated. the round was designed for killing out to 500 yards. last year I killed a muly buck at 420 yards with a 75 grain wolf amuniition. double lung shot, went 10 yards, and dropped. 223 is a human killer out to 500, and deer are really close to humans when you think about the bones, and muscles that has to be penetrated. even down to the hide.
ChuckAllaway 2 years ago
i use a 300 mag as u can see by my user name but my wife uses a 223 and it works great she killed a huge doe with it last season it died less than thirty yards away i shot a 9 point and he died right there so either extreme works great
300mag83 2 years ago
Yeah I prefer my 30.30 but the AR makes for a good back up. But yeah, a 300mag=DRT (dead right there).

great vid ur right 223 with right bullet will kill whitetail no prob. at 500 yd that might be a little different. try federal ammo loaded with barns tsx bullets. that will do it.
camelkiller22 2 years ago
I have bushmaster myself, they work like a charm, very accurate.
I tagged a jackrabbit with it once, it probably be my last doing that though.
.223 too much for 1 rabbit but it works!
You're dad did nice job with those does.
jlac2xmglock 2 years ago
yea try to kill them from more then 40 yards out and then try to drop um, not gunna happen.
6916802 2 years ago
I'm sure it could happen. But where we hunt, your lucky to get a 100 yard shot. The terrain mainly consists of thick forests with dense underbrush.
recruit71 2 years ago
yea i hunt on my corn fields here in Illinois and you have to use a larger round to drop a white tail. you have to be able to drop them at 500 yards or further. I was hunting once with my mini 14 and i put 2 rounds in the rib cage and it just trotted off and i couldn't bag it, maybe they didn'yt hit anything but idk.....
6916802 2 years ago
Yeah, at that range the its hard to hit the sweet spot. I prefer to use a nice 30.30 around here. The round makes for a good brush gun.
recruit71 2 years ago

rsoto33 2 years ago 2
was this your video?
PETEVN 2 years ago
this video is not what hunting is all about! just shooting to fill the freezer is not what this sport is! thats why hunters get a bad name? hunting is not about the freezer but about the exsperience with your comrads and kids so you have something to talk about years down the road not how many does you shot for hamburger! be sure to pass down the pictures of your hamburgure to your grandchildren so they can shear them with there freinds at school or maybe a family reunion? thanks Pete
PETEVN 2 years ago

PETEVN 2 years ago
The area we hunt is over populated with does. There is a reason why we choose to kill them over bucks. And you must know that over population results to disease and a break down in genetics. Which results in smaller and un healthy deer. So please, go eat your beef.

where are you hunting? i'm sure your problem can be taken care of within one year if there is a over population in your area??????? give me a call, if not! i do have extra rounds and i just bought a new ar15 223, so i could help you out with over-population!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 9208191144

Not legal in California, where .243 is the smallest caliber legal for deer. But yes, with proper shot placement, a 223 will dang sure fill the freezer. And when the rubber hits the road, that's what it's about.
Now, wave some steaks over the coals, and let's eat some venison! 8^)

He said he killed the family.. Lol :D
Spelunker0211 2 years ago
Have you bled them yet? I see all these
hunting videos where they shoot from great distance or are more concerned about making a video instead of bleeding the animal as soon as possible.a shot through the hart is not enough! It is allso better to hang them upside down. Believe me, try it and you'll see the meat is better, more tender and will hold longer. I know most people do it your way but then most do it wrong. I don't know much about hunting but a lot about this.Happy eating.

The video was posted to show that "yes" a .223 can be a good choice in taking white tail deer. I have an AR-15 but I use a 30.30 for white tail. So what I am trying to say is that a .223 or 5.56 is a good multi purpose round. Not every one can afford to buy a diferent rifle for every season.
recruit71 2 years ago
i hear what your saying.good reply btw.i wouldnt disagree with useing a 223 on smaller deer but if i was hunting a place where a 300 pound buck is posable id leave it in the gun case i think there is better multi purpose rounds 25-06 243 6mm as far as varmit/big game rifle
fackit74 2 years ago
the 223 is not legal here for big game.yes it will kill on an ideal shot so will a 22 rimfire but hunting doesnt always give u the ideal shot so id def pick a larger cal.and if u do wound a deer atleast u will have a better blood trail to follow the 223 might not
fackit74 2 years ago
i killed dear with a 223 , so what is the big deal, i have shot them with smaller guns, some times you can blow there hearts plum out with a big gun and they still run off without a heart. i shot one buck down 4 times with a 30-06 he still got away, so some times it depends on the deer some times,
