Miss Kansas looked like a mutant porn star from Gunsmoke. She won because the pageant was held in the state of Kansas that year. Miss California and Miss Hawaii were more deserving of the crown.

She also gave great answers during the Q&A portions. My other favourites were Miss New York and Miss California. New Jersey and Illinois were also charming in the interview round. "Gowns of their own choosing." ROFL Trust, the gowns were chosen by the state directors, NOT the contestants. If you see a girl who seems a bit bothered or unconfident, it's because SHE was unhappy with the gown selection.
IMHO, Oklahoma was the best in gown because you focused on HER, and the gown did not outshine her. And this coming from someone who LIVES for liquid beaded & rhinestoned gowns.
You've got a point on the last paragraph, that it's more important the focus doesn't go just on the dress. But I have to say, in Hawaii's case it was a bit different, as the dress draws you in, and then the construction brings your focus up to her face, just gorgeous. Oklahoma was too, but she was also short, which unfortunately is usually a mark against you in the pagents. It's not fair that it is, it just is that way

I agree. Hawaii could have won Universe. The gowns in USA used to be much more fashion forward. Oregon's looked straight out of the Miss Venezuela Pageant. Miss Veneuela has top designers clothe their contestant's at the national and international level. Now, the USA gown competition I find boring and uninspired which is partly why we continue to get our asses spanked at Universe, IMO.
That's an interesting observation on the differences of the gown competition in the US versus other places. I have to agree there are times that I just don't get how bad some of the dresses are in Miss USA. There have been exceptions though. In 2004 Shandi from the US wore that gorgeous Blue gown, one of the best from the US IMO. But you are right, when I look back, the US doesn't get to many in the great dept. 1992 was a perfect example, what a horrible gown at Miss Universe and at the US
Miss Alabama's gown was red also. Believe me, the music choices were in place LONG before the pageant. Not to say the Kansas directors didn't choose a red gown to match the production number.
