  • great guitar solo...never gets old

  • sick solo, elliot!

  • Ric said many years ago they would never get back together and i was so upset to hear that, but with the passing of Ben Orr i could never listen to "The Cars" and feel the same way without him.Ben sang 2/3rds of the songs.Question me not in saying that Ric is nothing more than amazing and his solo stuff is impressive. But as a true Cars fan i ask that Ric does his own thing and with all the members of the Cars.Just make it your own thing..Ben Orr was the Cars.Don't ever try to recreate the past..

  • @davegullison Where have you been? You do know that they have a new album out, don't you?

  • Best Band of there time,no doubt.i saw them live in Toronto shortly before they dismembered and i was so grateful i got to see the "real deal" before it ended.they never moved around much on stage other than a knee bend from ric and some hopping up and down by Greg Hawkes but there sound was incredible and nothing short of amazing.I will ALWAYS be the Greatest fan of "The Cars" RIP Ben.your voice will always live on :)

  • best bass line of 80s DOR

  • i agree that this is the most underated live band of all time. greg hawks is a genious and easton flawless and one of the best i have ever seen solo. very much live talent!

  • Ah..........Polymoog.........................

  • From their very experimental and magnificent "Panorama" album. An underrated classic, no doubt. Still my second favorite Cars album. The Cars were always good live, (no lip-synching here folks) and Ric wrote all their songs. Can NOT wait for "Move Like This"!!

  • Miss these guys, man.

  • Eliot Easton is extremely underrated indeed. I would never hesitate to put him in my favorite guitarists list. Jimmy Page, or someone like that who is often mentioned, would take 3 minutes to get his point across, where Easton would fill a mere 15 or 20 seconds with some of the most captivating guitar work I have ever heard. Not that I don't love me some Zeppelin, Its just these days I'm more into concise solos.

  • this sounds exactly like their performance in 1981

  • I’m Flying Like A Cement Kite. Nice.

  • Is their reunion tour gonna happen in 2011 or is it just a rumor?? anyone know?

  • @mondocaneman

Well, at this point it's just a rumor. Yes, I listened to the three short clips on their Facebook page, but I doubt that they can create music any better than their previous work. I will be the first one to eat my words if they do a reunion album and/or tour. But they made such great music in the 80s...how can they do anything to beat Touch and Go and Heartbeat City. Watch the clip from Live Aid. It's absolutely fantastic.

  • I love this song! The Cars do their songs so fantastic "Live" ! This is absolutely amazing!

  • The Cars my all time favorite band!!!

  • Ben's transformed from new wave to the miami vice look of the day at 3:04. Gone way too soon. Love the Cars, but glad he got some solo fame before he left us.

  • Well, by this point David Robinson had gotten rid of his mullet. Oh, yes. And they were also making great music.

  • One of the most underrated bands of all time. Maybe they were overlooked by mainstream rock critics at the time because they were "new wave". They were a great live band as well and Elliot Easton deserves way more recognition than he gets. The Cars were the first rock concert I ever saw (back in 1980) and it was a great show, even though the opening act was Nick Gilder.

  • The second best song in their repertoire, closely following Heartbeat City. OK, all you fiftysomethings, repeat after me, "They just don't make music like that any more."

  • The 4 morons that gave this song thumbs down need to see a psychiatrist. Or maybe they just don;t know perfection when they see it !!!!

  • Great song, great band !!!

  • Love the cars forever

  • I saw The Cars in San Francisco Calif. back in 1979-80 while serving in the US Navy, one of the best concerts I have ever been to.

  • i would nearly kill to be able to go back in time and see that song done live! one of my all-time faves for a long long time!

  • Benny's flirting again at 0:27. LOVE that smile.

  • da-da da da- da- da- background always reminds me of Bonanza theme music. Little hard to hear it on this version.

Great song tho, loved the new Wave.

  • @terrafirma91 Yeah, you're right, that was some nice guitar work by Easton in this vid.

  • Such a tight band musically.

  • Elliot Easton, menudo guitarrista!!!!

  • great hook! the cars were the best! proud to say the 80s were my growin up years!

  • Elliot.... what a talent.

Tasteful, creative, comtemporary in any age......

    I watch in awe

  • Elliot ain't underrated here on Youtube.

  • ELIOT EASTON is for me one of the most melodic underated guitar player, his work, has it all...

  • @Andofher Elliot Easton, James Honeyman-Scott and Andy Summers- awesome yet criminally under rated and seldom-mentioned killer guitarists.

  • @crapple009: I totally agree except for Andy Summers, you can find lots of articles on him. But for some crazy reason guitarists never talk about Elliot Easton, his style is so unique.

  • Great guitar as usual by EE.

  • The beat of the song drives me crazy. It's sounds like its in 5/4 but not sure. God I love the guitar solo. Elliot Easton is underated and this video kind of makes me sad when see Benjamin Orr. Great band.

  • @chubsoda They were great even then. I grew up in New England and they were huge, and yet they didn't even have an official record release. Their demo was being aired on Boston radio and people were requesting their songs and trying to find their album which didn't even exist. The rest, as they say, is history.

  • It's all about mathematics. If you have an instrument play a line of 6 beats and another play a line of 7, then the verse would end after 42 beats unless one deliberately starts later in the song.

  • If you had told me in 1984 that we would see another period of popular music that was based purely on style, not substance (I'm looking at you, Gaga), I wouldn't have believed it.

Thank gods I grew up in the eighties.

  • 2 words....SWEET TELE

  • From the Panorama album, it carried more a Copeland (western) feel than Rush. A gem of a tune that was included on their greatest hits collection. Classic Okasic sounds. Excellent guitar solo in stereo echo.

  • mbrk6827, none of them had 'mullets' here. You need glasses.

  • this is one of the greatest Mullet bands of the '80's.

  • @mbrk6827 You must be very, very young. They are not wearing mullets! This is just layered hair. Nevertheless, a great and under appreciated band, especially Ben Orr who was shy to the point of it being painful to watch him in interviews, but had the voice of an angel.

  • This album never really got any "air play" although it is one of my favs.

  • estupenda banda, gran ritmo !!

    gracias Salvador por mandarmelo!!

le djo mis 5*********al que lo subio!!

    ~Jossie~

  • This is a very unique composition. Very innovative indeed. Eliot Easton can put more character into a solo than any other. I never thought Easton received the recognition he so well deserved.

  • @terrafirma91 Right you are my friend! Easton was awesome! Nice progressive composition with the bass/drums locking into a mind blowing time signature. Possibly the best Cars tune.

  • lakefloor: You bring up a very interesting, and hardly mentioned fact of this song: The bass/drums arrangement (rhythm section), that seems to be this song's most noticeable feature. I don't think I've ever heard a R & R composition with such a unique rhythm. I don't think there will ever be another band as unique as the Cars.

  • @terrafirma91 Couldn't agree with you more! Nice to know someone shares the same appreciation.

  • @lakefloor so tight & relevant!

    so greatlake ,5/4 then?

cuz yer mathematical break down seems deceptive yet simple...

also: gerb, didn't hear-in much rush until just this momo when i recalled limelight & red barchetta & thought, "he might have something there..."

  • @terrafirma91

I completely agree...I think this is one their best compositions...ever...and it sounds like it's right out of the Todd Rundgren songbook....ironically, look who Elliot's been touring with!!

  • @axeman1958 : Interesting point you mention here. I wonder who had the more influence on the other?

  • @terrafirma91

well if I'm not mistaken, Todd produced that album and I dont think it was by chance that Elliot pulls off the best ( most melodic) solo of his career. I think Todd's "sound/style" , as well as The Beatles, is evident throughout The Cars history.

  • @terrafirma91 As a musician and guitarist for 40 yrs I can tell you that Elliot was a truly insightfull musician who was content with creating crafty guitar hooks for the song rather than how fast he could play. It takes a special disapline to stay within the group than to stand out from it. You r spot on with your insight....

  • @ThePaulygee : So you're well aware that anyone can play a concoction of fast licks, yet still would lack melody, or creativity. Easton had the talent to place a "mood" into his solos, not only in this song, but every song the Cars recorded. His solos fit each song to a tee. His talents contributed tremendously to the Cars overall, and we can all admire his, and their work. I miss the Cars. They were never given the accolades they so-well deserved.

  • @terrafirma91 Its not innovative in music at all, the Cars took their chops from the 30s,40s,50,& 60s comp styles, they are very smart musicians that KNOW HOW TO RIGHT SONGS!!!! nothing out of the ordinary..just a group that wrote interesting and awesome songs!!!!

  • GREAT MUSICIANS...GREAT SONG.

  • All of the Cars contributed lyricaly....just Ric took all of the credit except for a few songs. But each Cars offered his own lyrical content.

  • @BenjaminOrrLegacy

You can tell. None of Ric's solo endevours came close to anything the Cars put out. That can't be a coincidence.

  • Btw, about the song itself... it has such a great concert feel to it. The keys in the beginning and throughout have that 'Rush - Subdivisions' type touch to it, and so does the guitar, and so does the bass! The song presence is powerful yet still smooth and deliberate and inviting... And the song just seems to meander so melodically into everlasting yet perfect completion. A crowd favourite, and, a band favourite for sure. Happy touching everyone!

  • @EjGerbino Don't think I could have put it any better. I immediately thought of Rush when I first heard the song, particualarly with the bass/drums time signature and the spacey keyboards, not to mention one of the hottest leads from Easton. It sounds deceptively simple. Complex, and yet incredibly melodic.

  • Great all-around performance by The Cars. Awesome Bass song, and arguably one of the tastiest and most impressive Guitar leads ever! And Ric is a wonderful singer and genius composer. They all are actually. And they are all underrated at their respective talents. I'm a fan of them individually and collectively. All the parts equally feed off of each other perfectly. And this song represents that point as poigniantly as any other song they've ever performed live or in the studio. Kudos as always!

  • One of the coolest, most tasty guitar solos ever.

  • @ElectricShed tasty is a strange adjective to use for a guitar solo? What did it taste like? Beer breath, B.O. and toe jam?

  • one of my favorite guitar leads period

and Orr plays a great bassline in this song

  • i wish Ric would have let Ben right some songs too. I wonder if he was just being selfish. I wasn't always fond of Ric's lyrics, but it worked. They had said that they each really created their own parts for the songs..so in a way, they all wrote them together. I think Ben would've came up with some excellent stuff too though. His solo stuff is great!

  • Ben said that he had trouble with lyrics, so I don't know if that would have happened. What I do know is that nothing Ric ever did solo-wise came close to what The Cars did collectively. Draw your own conclusions.

  • Good Ric singing song. This was always one I liked a lot.

  • Love the Cars. The best band ever.

  • I was there. Floor seats 6 rows back.

  • Great song great performance.

  • i wonder why very few bands do covers of this great band, mostly small bars and just one song

  • I think it's because their songs are harder to reproduce than they seem. There's a lot of skill in their arrangements and everybody in the band has to be up to the task. Otherwise it's just a partial cover, and not worth doing. Also, Ben's and Ric's voices are very unique, and the songs are associated with the sounds of their voices. Anyway, that's one theory.

  • seen this band 4 x L70s and Early 80s never a bad show.the music is as great sounding today as yesterday.I FEEL LUCKY!!!

  • and indeed you should be ;)

  • i was at this show. elliot easton is one of may favorite guitarists. and rick is amazing as well. i read somewhere that he said something like "if it wasn't for me elliot would just be playing a bunch of blues licks that no one wanted to hear." but in actuality his blues collided with rick's new wave and it produced some super cool stuff.

  • sad that such a great and quirky band is never going to give us new music.

    depressing

  • this is where jarvis cocker gets his vocal ideas ha very simular

  • it sounds weird though. Your right it is 4/4 - the keyboard definetely is. The drums sound weird timing though! What a great song

  • It's all over 4/4 but the drums and bass are in 5/4. A great example of polyrhythmics.

  • I'm confused. If the drums are in 5/4 then isn't the song itself in 5/4? what makes it 4/4. does the part at 1:33 remind you of the Goonies (the keyboards)?

  • It's called polymetrics, that is playing one time signature over another one, in this time 5/4 over 4/4. That means that after 4 rounds for the drums and bass (in 5/4 time), goes evenly with 5 rounds of the other stuff (in 4/4). So you could technically say that it's either in 4/4, or in 5/4 or both or neither, but since the song continuallt reverts to the whole band playing 4/4, I'd say that it's mainly a 4/4 song.

  • Yeah but which beat is Rick starting his vocal?

  • It's on the third beat of the seventh bar.

  • Comment removed

  • Ha you're right. Then he starts on the fourth, followed by the fifth followed by the first. Very nice. 5/4

  • The song starts in 5/4, then it switches to 4/4 during the chorus, then back to 5/4.

  • Ric actually looks like one of my brothers....& my brother is just as tall.

  • best cars song. its3 beat then 4 in chorus

  • no man, its all 4/4

  • One of my all time favorite songs.

  • THe singer has a real unique voice, Great

  • Great music... The guitar solo is amazing !!

  • >>>> I was there & still have the ticket from the show........ back then the air in summit was rather cloudy ....... I crack up when I pass the building now since it's now a big church..................

  • the synth here sounds a lot better than in the album version to me..

  • Great song. Great band. OK, I'm over 50 and I'll say it: They just don't make music like that any more.

  • rick ocasek is so handsome

  • David Robinson is so handsome

  • LOL

  • Why did THE CARS breakup?

  • my understanding is the cause was partly the failure of the followup in '87 and partly long-standing conflicts between Orr and Ocasek, who had been a musical team long before The Cars formed (in fact they'd had a major label deal as a duo back in the early 70s).

  • This was a great show. I was there.

  • Wow, were you really?

  • I was there too! Gawd I really miss the Summit and Ben Orr!

  • Great tune. Rick Ocasek is a excellent writer.

  • that's a sweet Tele & a sweet solo!!!

  • thanx for info.rip B.O

  • are they still alive and well?

  • no.

  • The blonde bassist and vocalist (Ben Orr) is dead - pancreatic cancer, Ric Ocasek is music producer, David Robinson (drummer) isn`t in music business, Elliot Easton and Greg Hawkes (and other musicians) reunited as The New Cars..

  • AT 3:00 in that keyboard lick reminds me of the Goonies!

    Who's with me on this!?

  • Un temazo,una maravilla.

  • Glad to help.. Was one of my fav 80's songs too

  • was a Tom Petty song

  • and btw... this is a kick ass song!!!!!!

  • Can anyone tell me the name of an early-80s song with a similar synth line to this? I've been looking everywhere and I can't find anything.

    Much thanks.

  • was maybe something by The Police?

  • Nope, it sounded American, with a synth line similar to this, and with a guitar sound similar to that of "Abracadabra" by Steve Miller.

  • i got it !!

  • You Got Lucky is that it?

  • Haha, yes! Thanks a ton.

  • "Spirits In The Material World" sound similar to that sound. So many synths were similar at the time that it may even be the same patch on the same synth.

  • Since when did the Cars become Punk? I graduated High school in '82 and I seem to remember Black Flag, The Dickies, Sex Pistols were Punk. This is New Wave or Modern Rock. Not Punk.

  • Ocasek the genius....AND Elliot Easton! One of the best and most underrated guitarists ever. It's cool that there are some signature guitars in his honor.

  • this song is very simple but striking!!

  • That was an instant classic.

    Greetings from Iran

  • good song

  • man they sound great

  • The best there will ever be.

  • I was bo6rn in Houston,Tx.

The Summit is now Lakewood Church.

Relient stadium is Great. Just saw Van Halen in January 08 ' I was at this concert too.

Strange. It's weird to see this video and know I was there. I'm sure I was wasted cause I was 18.

  • 5/4 over 4/4, tasty.

  • you caught that too, huh?

  • This whole live set was played on the radio once and i went to the station and got them to let me illegally(!) tape it from their masters. This song is why i went.

  • Ocasek the genius. Great tune.

  • I love this video... seen it a million times when I was in high school. But I can't understand why Benjamin Orr looks so bored! Ric Ocasek is the ultimate punk rocker. I miss The Cars sooooo much and what I wouldn't give to have been at this concert. Thanks for the memories....

  • "Ric Ocasek is the ultimate punk rocker".

You, sir, clearly know nothing about punk rock.

  • "You, sir, clearly know nothing about punk rock."

I am not going to open that up for debate here. This is not the forum for that.

  • You're right. And I'm being a bit of a tool anyway...

  • Panorama might not be as even an album as the first one or Candy O, but it produced their best songs....this and Since You're Gone show them at the top of their game.

  • I agree.

Panorama represents The Cars at their best. It is their most underrated album.

  • Wow! The Summit?! I remember that place! I was born in Houston in 1985 and I remember going to the Summit as a kid to see the Rockets play. For those of you who don't know, it was later called the "Compaq Center" and then purchased by Lakewood Church (after Compaq went under). Lakewood now broadcasts live televised services across the US from this old basketball arena, which is creepy to me.

Thanks for the video! I wish I could travel back in time to see this live, but this is close enough :-)

  • Of course it would be creepy.

    All religion is creepy.

  • Yes it's a shame. The Summit not only hosted lots of great shows, it paid property taxes.

  • Aww I love this song. I recall many a night driving around with friends and this blaring on my car's cassette player ;) Such happy memories. Always loved the country-western feel to this song.. kind of skipping along.. and I typically am not a c&w fan.

  • Elliot Easton= Freak. Another blistering solo from an underrated but exceptional guitarist. His solos never overwhelmed the tune. Nailed it everytime. Outstanding.

  • love the keyboards, very trance-like,which fits the song perfectly

  • excelente suena mejor que en estudio

  • Que pieza.. espere bastante que alguien subiera algo en vivo

  • temon touch & go del albun "PANORAMA" del 80'

  • Elliot Easton is a very underrated guitar player...he has a knack of hitting all the "right" notes in his solo's...keeping the song as the focal point at all times

  • I'm a HUGE Ben Orr fan but Rick is SOOOO good on this song!

  • excellent...muy bueno... nunca me imagine que the cars sonara y tocara tan bien en vivo... gracias

  • En vivo son excelentes!

  • absolutely brilliant... astounding theyre not already in hall of fame... only to be explained by the fact that ric's compositions are so naturally catchy that they take on the familiarity and obviousness of nursery rhymes, and the average listener's mind is addled by it, rendering it unable to register in full depth the uniqueness and talent that underpins it all -- that solo stands up to any 30 seconds in all of modern music

  • One of the best guitar solos ever.

  • I always thought that was a great solo when I was kid. I just learned it today....somehow I never got around to learning it. He changed the chord progression a little to follow the lead... pretty cool

  • Soy fan de The Cars, es un grupo fantástico

  • A mi también me encantan, mis favoritos.

  • A master piece!

  • If they aren't in the Rock n Roll hall of fame they should be.

  • i can play that solo (see my channel...)

  • This was the first rock band I was introduced to at the age of 12. Panorama was my first cassette. I know this album by heart. Never saw them live. THAT IS A VOID. Each member will always be legendary in my mind.

  • ROTOTO27: Hi. Members of a rock band will be 'legendary in your mind'? You must have a brain the size of a pea.

    God Bless You & Yours:)

  • I remember this tour back in the day, saw them in the Chicago area with Wang Chun, walked in when Wang Chun was banging out Dance hall days...the drum beat on that song was thundering .."take yer baby by the hand...boom cha boom cha....great show by Cars with this same set..this was always my fav Cars song, nice to see it here...I was so drunk by the end, I made out with my girl pal when my date wasn't around and scored with my date when we got home....whatta night

  • Rockin, just rockin...beautiful...swoonin....bravo Elliot, what a solo....

  • I saw the same concert a couple of day's before Houston in San Antonio Tex,great tour open act Whan Chung Sumer 1985

  • Acme company- The beat is in5/4 time, with the drum h/h 8ths in a triplet feel. the snare drum on beats 1, the a of 2, 4, 5. It is a two measure pattern. Very cool, love it.

  • NEVERMIND RICK ,ELLIOT IS ALL OVER US

  • I've just discovered this song and I love it. Catchy tune. The guitar solos are quite impressive especially live!

  • cool, the guitar riffs and beat are actually backwards,,very hard to play. Most rock songs are 2-1-2-beat.this is a strange 1-2-1 beat.

  • Buy the album Panorama; great piece of obscure music.

One of the great unhearlded albums of the past 30 years.
