obviously she wasn't the greatest stride pianist when compared to Tatum, Peterson, or even Donald Lambert, but I've never seen/heard anybody with a left hand faster.
I too loved this take from the movie "I Dood It", featuring Hazel Scott and her band as well as having a cameo from Lena Horne. I was only dismayed that there was not more of the two of them but that was a sign of the times.
@WMEL5 You got that right! It's all kind of amazing that the "Studios" let these two amazing musical talents even perform together on the same bill! All things considered, if this were a "live" performance, they'd have blown the roof off the theater! Thanks so much for writing!
The talent in this movie is beyond amazing...Hazel Scott just blows you away with her dancing fingers...the ease and poise! WOW! Lena is too beautiful for words, too, with the voice of an angel...and what a joy to see the young Red Skelton! The stage was just full of GIFTS in the back-up singers, and musicians!Dignified, raw talent! Think about it...Andre' 2000 honors these talents in many of his movies and videos! CLASS!
@rastagirl007 Hi rastagirl007! Honored to hear from you, and totally agree with your opinion of beautiful Hazel Scott, and those flying fingers! Her talent was not so much international, but inter-planetary! What a winner! There's always more, and wish I could show it/them, but they're already up here on YT. Thank you so much for your comment!
@noirtriptyline Sorry for such a long delay in response. I'm pretty sure this was from a B and W movie from the late '40s called "I Dood it!" It starred Red Skelton. Thanks for writing, and again, sorry for the tardy reply!!
@noirtriptyline You're welcome! Some folks have "international" talent! Not to get too out there, but I think her talent was "interplanetary!" :) No, I wasn't at area 51! Thanks so much for your message!
@MissGoldenDreams13 You're right! She was a sensational, lovely and knowledgeable performer! Also, I've a dear, kind friend who was baptized by Ms. Scotts then husband, Adam Clayton Powell! Guess that makes her a "triple-threat!" She was beautiful, talented and seriously "well-connected!" politically. Thanks so much for your comment.
I am very familiar with this great standard through performances by the great Ethel Waters but I am ready to stand and cheeer for the lovely and talented Hazel Scott.Yes Indeed .PS How many Top Hats were used in this clip?
I just saw her on 'Broadway Rythm' and was blown away! She is one of the top talented pianist I have seen of her day and a beautiful woman and great smile. I am showing her videos to my children to inspire them to keep up their lessons.
@kautique Hello, and you couldn't have made a more inspirational choice for your children! She's just wonderful, and she's all you said, and then some! I'm not sure, but believe she was the 2nd wife of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Her talent, beauty and incredible ability on the piano should have made her more of a "star" than she was. Grateful that we've these few blazing examples of her prowess! Thanks so much for your comment!
Hazel Scott doesn't get enough recognition. People are always talking about Lena Horne, whom I like, but forget about Hazel. She was a talented, glamourous, beautiful woman as well, who fought against racism and stereotyping way before the civil rights movement. I love this scene, why couldn't Hollywood have done this more often, all the beautiful blacks are dressed glamourously, classy, and looking dignified, instead of appearing how Hollywood usually dressed them as homely maids and servants
I stumbled across Hazel Scott while reading a SMOOTH or EBONY magazine critic's review of a non - fiction on her biography. Truly she is stunningly beautiful and equally talented as a jazz pianist. I feel honored that my maiden's name is Scott too!
Did anyone mention this is from the 1943 movie "I Dood It" with Red Skelton, Elenore Powell and Lena Horne and directed by Vincente Minnelli? Available at TCM. However, this performance and Lena Horne are the best thing in the movie.
Truly remarkable! For those wondering who the bassist and drummer are -- they are George "Red" Callender and Lee Young (Lester's brother), respectively.
You're right on time! I'm grateful for your knowledge of those great men who accompanied this most amazing of artists. She's miraculous, but miracles need help, and you've supplied the names! Thank you!
Indeed a superb pianists. I think that she is the pianist that also appeared in Rhapsody in Blue. Her playing is very fluent and very even. It should be the envy of classical as well as jazz pianists. Another pearl from Indigo1045.
Hazel scott, lena horne, ethel water,s bessie smith, QUEENS!
