Really is the best voice in this moment. To try to describe all his marvelous sound is for me difficult because is in every song a surprise and beautiful aliveness.
I rather like his vibrato-- it makes him sound like a gentle sort of person. Perhaps that sounds strange, but that is what is sounds like to me. Thank you for posting this; it's absolutely lovely!
This tenor possesses a marvelous voice which he uses absolutely correctly, technique wise. He's able to convey the text and the thrust of the story very well. To those who find his vibrato too fast, I say you need to educate yourself more as this is absolutley correct for his voice, and he displays a technique that would be a credit to any teacher of voice. He also possesses a dark warmth to the timbre that makes it even more enjoyable to hear.
I would tend to agree. I heard his early recordings, did not like to voice but thought it, given maturity/proper use, would improve. He has. Remember, people complained of Caruso's vibrato & he turned out OK. I look for this voice to get even better, w/good fortune.
I agree - I saw this performance twice and not only was he great but the whole cast sang and acted beautifully. Kathy Lindsay - everyone loved her. And when Anna Nebtrenko said he has one of the most beautiful tenor voices in the wold today I have to agree. It definintley has an old fashioned quality but it is amazing.
Sorry, taste is obviously very different... for my ears C. has a goat-like vibrato and there was no acting at all to be seen...instead all these crippeled dwarfs jumping in the foreground - tastless mise en scène...
It's interesting to hear singers debut roles, which was the case for Calleja, Lindsay, and Kim. This opera is extremely difficult, too. I agree with you; it was a great performance, in both acting and singing. I was quite pleased, even though it was at times a little rough around the edges.
Also, juanmlleras (if that is your name), when one sings in French, it is indeed often necessary to make a "nasal sound" - but in Opera Land, we call this phenom "nasalized vowels". "Nasalized vowels" are essential to the French language.
Whatever, people. First of all, if you cannot write your critique of Calleja in a grammatically-correct fashion, I have a difficult time taking your input seriously. Secondly, this is obviously a poor recording. Thirdly, I heard this man today, and had an ear orgasm every time he opened his mouth. His voice has a beautiful vibrato, a glorious squillo, and he exhibits wonderful control - it reminds me of a young di Stefano. He gave a wonderful performance that brought tears to my eyes.
@AfroPoli Yes, teh fluttery vibrato and constant sharpness in the intonation point to vocal issues. But I find he has lots of energy, and did not bore me.
@AfroPoli gosh, you're hard to please. It wasn't perfect but it was pretty darn good. I'm guessing you are not a singer, otherwise you might have given him some credit. People like you make being a musician a real pain.

Gives me the chills...I'm just too proud that he is Maltese and that I got to sing with him; so amazing ;D

He is amplified, constricted and nasal. He has a tremolo and should go back to studying.

@Baritanist Not amplified. I'm sorry to disappoint you.

I've seen this performance on Met HD view from Amsterdam and from the versions of Hoffman I've seen this was most certainly the best one.

I think he remainds very much Bjorling.

I hope the sharpness is only due to nervousness. His intonation can be iffy at times, but spot on at others.
The tone is always beautiful, as it should be; this is what has been missing in tenor singing since Pavarotti went astray from his repertoire.

It's so nice to hear a lyric tenor nowadays who knows his own voice and sticks to roles that he can sing.

@xarenir Yep, Villazon ruined his by trying to do to many roles.

Thin voice, intonation problems, fluttery voice and no characterization. Boring.

He's sharp a lot, and also seems to be rushing.
