  • i think the first English Giselle (if you say there was one before Markova) must have been Emma Livery (mid 19th century) who died from injuries sustained in an on stage fire.

  • One thing, I'm so glad that the fashion for dancing Albrecht in

a pair of hush puppies never caught on. The whole of the film

is a condensed version of the ballet not lasting longer than about 30 minutes, I recall.

  • This is just priceless! thanks a lot for posting these Markova´s and Dolin´s videos goldenidol... I have to thank techology and the internet every time I watch a video like this =)

  • from 'a portrait of giselle'

  • Markova was not the first english ballerina to dance Giselle.....she was the first english ballerina to dance Petipa's edition.

  • I am absolutely intrigued. You have enlightened me before. I find the vast knowledge you have ...incredible! Please tell me - who was the first? Dame Alicia speaks so matter of factly about her Giselle I can't help but chuckle!

  • oh dear - I'll have to look it up!! "giselle" was being performed at her Majesty's Theatre during the romantic heyday loooooong before it even went to Russia! BTW....you honor me with your kind words goldenidol - or shall I call you 'Bazhok'? . I'm bowing low. :)

  • @mrlopez2681 This happened on March 12 1842, but it was performed then and there by Carlotta Grisi .

  • @mrlopez2681 I believe all pre-Markova/Sergueiev London stagings were danced by non-British ballerinas..(Pavlova/Clustine, 1913 and Spessivtseva/Dolin 1932)

  • My total admiration to Dame Alicia Markova and Sir Anton Dolin. They founded the London Festival Ballet.

    Thank you for posting!

  • Can anyone tell me where to find the whole dance of Giselle with Alicia Markova please?! I would be forever grateful.

  • More! Show the whole film of Giselle! Please!

  • These clips with Sir Anton Dolin talking and showing, are so pleasing for me. When I was a ballet student he taught me many times and was so memorable. (1978, 1979) He was a good raconteur too. It really is lovely to hear his voice again.

Thank you so much for uploading these clips.

  • So interesting to hear him discuss the part. Thank you for sharing this.
