@droid740 dude, it's just a movie. Cagney wasnt like that in real life. But because you believe it so much is an accord to his Talent. Cagney was one of the Greats that came from Vaudeville, and the man earned his stripes all the way up. His looks and tough guy attitude (You dont work vaudeville and not earn one) got him cast as a mainstay of both Coppers and Criminals alike. and his New Yorkerness got him cast as soldier and Sailor alike, with that Street Smart Tough Guy Persona.
