  • love that

  • Hooray for real music! :]

  • The talent in this group is totally amazing! All of these guys are great musicians. Listen to the base line, it is so melodic, in sync, it's perfect. Keyboards awesome, lead guitar, and Ian Paice - great drummer. First time I heard this song, I love it, and still love it today.

Many things a man can lose.....his self, his rights his views....

but never his heart, or his love.

So take this hand of mine, and climb baby climb....

    to the hills up above.

    (Awesome lyrics, awesome song)

  • Always one of my favorite songs by Deep Purple.

This was Rod Evans doing the lead vocals and Nic Simper on base.

But the best Deep Purple lineup was Ian Gillan, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, Ian Paice and Ritchie Blackmore. Ian Gillan is one of the best rock singers ever. Right up there with Robert Plant - in his prime.

  • I got into Deep Purple in the late 80's since it was before my time (born in 1965). but, as I get older, I like this early "Mark I" stuff better than the riff-bashing stuff they did in the 1970s. This is just a very inventive pice of music - perfect for Rod Evans weird voice.

  • @PicnicHikeMusic Good remark. For those who like Rod Evans's voice, check the group he belonged to after his time in Deep Purple: it is called Captain Beyond.

  • Rod Evans es un grande también.

  • Take this hand of mine and climb , baby climb...Wow, haven't heard this in years... my Purple Passages album is in amazing shape but I have nothing to play it on.

    Thanks!

  • you know whats never mentioned about deep purple?how good the drummer is.altough he is senzational:D.one can feel every note he is playing.its like the drums magically turned themselves into sheets of music.u dont get that with bands these days.u dont get to hear the notes just some likeable rythm

  • Love that rhythmic, melodic minor mode introit: the rock minor mode -- rock chamber orchestral sophisticated, meaningful, rebirth rite of passage, tone poem, indigenous pioneer

  • Lot's of memories connected to this LP!

  • The Guitar Solo...The Guitar solo, I still dream about it !!!!!!

  • Whatever people say about how MK II that it was a significant transformation to DP I feel more attached to the MK I lineup and quality of production. So innocent, inspired, haunting and magical . . art in its purest form and quite honestly I don't miss Gillan's yelling and screaming, not one bit !

  • @pianist007 - amen - machine head was the end of DP for me

ELP's 1st came along just in time

    & King Crimson, &, &, &...

  • @pianist007 Amen!!!! The music on the first three purple albums is deeper than smoke on the water.

MrkI was never topped in my book. Mrk III went to funk. MrkII was the version everyone seem to love most.

Deep Purple could have been up there with Led Zeppelin if they changed there muisic and stuck with MRK 1, just my opinion.

  • This song has been a Deep Purple favorite for years, whenever I let someone hear this thats not heard it before I usually hear things like "odd"..."melodic"...."trippy".... "head music"

  • Excellent Song, I always find myself drawn back to early Purple, the only thing is I think this Rod Evans is singing on this track not gillian as in your picture!

  • Wish someone would reload this song, something's wrong with this video....

    Thanks!

  • If you listen to the guitar solo at 3:50, you hear Blackmore playing things that Van Halen got credit for. In fact listen to all of Ritchies early playing, he did a lot of things that many guitarists are getting credit for today. This Deep Purple was the best.

  • Rod Evans and Nick Simper were in Mark I DP! Obviosuly the guy who put the picture on the video is not atrue DP fan or he would know that...silly twat!

  • @AmericanFireBrand man, relax a bit... if you don't know who is in the band doesn't make you a non true fan.. You know everything about any band you like? besides this song is almost 50 years old!!! it doesn't matter anymore, it is legendary music just listen and don't try to proove via youtube that you are a mentor on DP, go write a biography about them ...smelly fart!!

  • very creepy but brilliant song

  • This song has a good vibe. Great tone from Blackmore

  • My second favorite song from the album, next to Wring that Neck (the BBC version)

  • WRONG FOTO MARK II

THIS IS A MARK I SONG

AND WE NEED ROD EVANS FOTO AND NOT IAN GILLAN

  • so damn catchy

  • This song haunts me...I first heard it when I was about 5. I still love it, almost 40 years later.

  • @wmacisaac This has to be double tracked guitar parts there is no way one person can play the riff at 00:21 and the solo at 00:16 at the same time

  • @wmacisaac Me too! I'll be 48 in September!

  • saving this post to my favorites to back another posting of the tune. Both are good .Just as long as I can keep listening to it! Balckmore at his best!

  • great song
