As a liberal, I am torn. I believe in free gun rights for all, but I also get uneasy when so many of my fellow liberals are anti-gun and these room-temp IQ'd neocon god-worshipers are stockpiling. So even if there was a government overthrow, the U.S. would probably just turn into a Christian theocracy, which would be even worse.
Actually, he is right; culture = values of people, the legacy of faith (faith = what matters most or 'belief in a particular value'): the reason this is right is because, there is NO objective morality; but he failed to mention that part. He is leading into PRESCRIPTIVE (thou shalt, thou shalt not) ethics as being a Universal Value (given by God) as a Moral Authority - which is false! Prescriptive ethics/morality (thou shalt, thou shalt not) is merely a tool to control others - which is immoral.
Everything he says has much background. He doesn't make up anything he studies constantly. Here he just starts of with the basic fact that culture is made by the religion of the people. It's true! Religion= culture externalized . He's actually quite brilliant. The sheer knowlledge he has collected the most of it he has gained after all his doctorate degrees. Dr. Grant is merely talking about the lessons of history and the effects religion has on history and a culture.
Speaking of 'gay marriage', I believe that if gay marriage becomes popular, POLYGAMY MAY MAKE A COMEBACK and after that, it will never be back to one man and one woman--that is why, in the U.S., we need to protect marriage--it's hard to believe that many black and white christians couldnt marry for centuries (they had a few 'marriages' because of slavery and jim crow, but they were there) homosexuals could have what they had for 200+ years 'common law'. Christians need to pray.
IS IT TIME?! Go to USRevolution2 (dot com) and get your flag of the Second American Revolution. They were recently all over the tax day rallies in Boston and D.C. They will also soon appear in Bob Basso’s new Thomas Paine videos and on Showtime’s “Weeds” show. They look exactly like the flag of Betsy Ross with a Roman numeral “II” in the center of the 13 stars. This flag is now in all 50 states and spreading from porch to porch. They make great gifts for family, friends and recovering Liberals.
cult does not equal faith. This could only come from the mouth of a person who has no idea of what constitutes faith. True faith is based in a spiritual perspective on life, not the other way around. The world does not establish faith, but rather, faith establishes ones view of the world. This man is, evidently, not living a life of faith, but one of cult(ure) and humanist perspectives. When he speaks of faith, he is out of his element.
suN12y you are an atheist. . So that means you don't believe in a higher power. You say you can only control yourself. Then why is it you want me to pay for Homosexuality? Why is it that you want me to pay for others mistakes. . . ie: they over eat, smoke, do drugs, and I need to pay for there well being? why is that? You are right when you said "Only I can control myself nothing else". That is the greatness of this Country. you have the right to choose. But, you must own those choices forever.
How do you pay for homosexuals? Oh no, two people having different mechanics of love making from the privacy of their homes. God forbid these relationships have a different mechanics of love making, that might make them EVIL
And you might have to pay for it...somehow, in a way which only you could invent.
as a british citizen i have basically seen all my liberties been taking away from me,it started with taking our guns and then they took it further, and when i say they i mean the government! dont let your government take your guns, fight for your rights and if you do i will be behind you 100 percent of the way.
as british citizens, you are in as much danger from your government as we are in america. the only difference is we still have our guns. and with the way things are going on now days, i promise, americans will not give up their guns. maybe after we take our country back here in the states, we can load up and help you get your country back as well. both of our governments are pushing towards totalitariansm. we must stop these commies.
I agree. I believe they can only enrage the masses of us by legislating every aspect of our life. They are pushing us.. Harder and harder each day. When does the rubber band snap? It has to snap! Its physics. We are all about to snap. One by one but all before its done!
@SNIPERSTEVE420 I agree, once we bring the gangsters in Washington to justice , we need to do what we can to help our friends throw their scum into prison also. The whole world is fed up with these corrupt governments, these politicians need to be taught a real lesson, that no one will forget!!! REVOLUTION ANYONE????
You are still a free man. Along with your neighbor, your friends, Family, village, city, state, countrymen. You must stand up and demand your guns back. Demand your freedoms Take what is rightfully yours. We all must do this. We all have always done this. Look at the history of tyrannical dictators and governments. None have ever succeeded completely. they will always fail. They will use there technology to try to control. but they do not have the man power to carry it out for long.
@rangers11000 I respect what you have said sir, why don't you all have a revolution and have a all new government you can have a Republic or anything you want take your LIbertys back.
@rangers11000 Umm when did Britain take away your guns? British people have *never* had the right to bear guns. You must be talking about longbows! ;)
@TheSpearthrower Have you ever read the English Bill of Rights? There is stated the right to bear arms. When the British took that right away from the colonists, they began planning for a conflict. That's what Paul Revere's ride was all about. The British were marching to arrest John Hancock and seize the colonists store of weapons.

Here's some quotes by our 1st two presidents about God. "Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle." George Washington
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." John Adams
Attention All Americans! Disenfranchised party members of Republicans and Democrats! Third party Libertarians and Constitutionalists! Change your political status to independent. Lets eliminate all of this party bickering and get some work done! We need to band together and to Clean the House of Representatives for starters, take back our country from career politicians who ignore our will and are only serving their own interests. Go to cleanthehouse (dot net)
Boiled down, this is a call for returning to government by the people. Sure, we are divided somewhat by our religions, party affiliations, etc, but basically, we all want a strong America. What we haven't addressed is what we want first. This is where politics by committee fails often. What should be first.
If the American Citizen picks up a weapon against the Government, they will be squashed, and the Media will join in with it by vehemently destroying us on the news. The Uneducated will believe he media, and the Revolution would be over before it began. There is a better way. A simpler way. And that way is not in Violence. Period. The moment you pick up a sword, know you will die by it.
If you look back in history (at any point in time other than cavemen) and even at today's events, what is the number one reason for unrest in the world - - religion !!!
Sure there are other reasons for war and discontent, but it's overwhelmingly the difference in people's beliefs.
Duh, the Palestinians and Israelites have been at war since the beginning, except they used to be called Philistines (Invaders). But now it's immorality AND Religion. Religion is not to blame, it's the people(s) who have an issue with it that cause the most turmoil. The United States is slipping into a state of immorality. The Lack of God is causing the most problems. People actually think that Homosexuality is OK! This is what is wrong. Wrong has become OK. Evil has become the norm.
well u should take a look into Leviticus where u can clearly see the book's devotion to kill handicapped people or people with different sexual orientation. Its just not right to be a midget its an abomination the little guy should be set on fire.
you are not even an American i bet! lol. you obviously do not understand americas history, how we became a country, and how things work here! how did we get our independence? sure we had a great political idea FREEDOM, which only comes by putting god first. we have a second amendment to protect our rights as mericans if our gov. gets too big... if u look @ america today, the silent majority is not listened to. so WHEN we do have another revolution, we will be united, and stronger than b4!!!!!!!
True: Only problem. Think this as it is how it will be: If the American People start another Revolution, it will be a divisive one. Left VS Right. In which the left will do what it always does. Blames everyone but themselves. And the right will preach at others while having sex with their maids and others, and we will be left holding a gun and asking WHY. This Revolution if it happens, will be stopped short by Martial Law. If that happens, its game over.
but god is a violation of the constitution, the Separation Of Church and state, i find it insulting that your god, is the one we should follow. People have killed more people in the Name of your "god" then ANY other in the world. just to convert people to believe the bible....
Too bad you didn't refer to the Constitution before posting your statemen. It specifically says "make no law establishing a religion:. GOD is not a religion.
You people need to get a copy of the Constitution, or read The 5000 Year Leap, which explains our Republic so even the uneducated should be able to understand. This nation was founded on Judeo-Christian ethics and the founding documents include "God" repeatedly. The seaparation of Church and State means only there shall be no established State religion. It's the ACLU and activist judges who have erroneously changed the meaning of our founding documents.
Hmmm......Stalin - now what religion was he? Stalin is the greatest mass murder to ever live. According to the documentary; "Stalin, Portrait of a Monster in Blood." He is estimated to have been responsible for possibly 60 Million Deaths! Then there's Hitler. Hmmm......
Stalin was an ex-seminarian who built an authoritarian dictatorship on a template put in place by Christianity. There was a trinity (Marx, Engels, Stalin), a Devil (Trotsky), miracles (Lysenko's biology), an Inquisition (the KGB). Stalin would never have been so successful had the Russian people not been trained by centuries of religious stupidity and servility.
My point was that soviet-style communism--aka Stalinism--was atheistic in name only. As far as it's form and function, it was a mirror image of religion. As far as Czarism having had "nothing to do with religion," that is just not accurate. The Czar, like all absolute monarchs, justified his authority on the grounds it was divinely mandated. America were "free" relative to Russia because religion was seperated from the state. Thank for God for that (pun intended)!
I can understand how one may be a Christan in "name only" but an "atheist in name only"? Does that make any sense?
There was both a cult of Lenin and a cult of Stalin because the communists realized that a culture (based on the word "cult") will eventually have some sort of religion.
The proposed a humanistic atheist religion in which man is God. Atheism is a religion that puts man in the place of God. Wherever atheists get control they try to "murder God" by killing or suppressing believers.
Well stuff it ya darwinian Moron. Go preach your Communist Liberalism God Man Ape non sense to the kiddies. We all know you Social Revolutionaries are good at targeting them... Then take that generation and just march us all into the One World United Nations were the same chumps that ruled russia will free us of our servitude. We can all hold hands and talk about tolerance while studying how Rollie Pollies and Flies act all day.
I usually try to examine other points of view and facts that may allow me to come to a different conclusion. However, just like a kid in a candy store, you picked only the facts that support your preconceived conclusion. Stalin was INSANE; his religion had nothing to do with it. If he was a hair dresser, would you assume that hair dressing drove him to commit countless murders? Of course not. Psychos will do whatever is expedient (Religion, Politics, etc.) to carry out their agenda.
Is it possible that hair dressing can lead someone to commit countless murders? I dont know, its possoble. If you've seen the hair dressers where I'm from, let's just say I've never felt so much safer now since I started trimming my own hair. LOL!
In the land of guns, the man without a decent politcal idea gets shot in the face by the agents of power & his revolution ends before his carcass hits the floor.
Your guns, frightened americans, don't make you free; they enslave you. They tie you to the game which the power in your land plays. If you beleive guns=political_power instead of good_ideas=political_power then you've already lost.
The next revolution in the usa will not be won because of its population's guns but in spite of them.
lol, not if DC piss's us off enough...you get 1million armed americans super pissed off, pissed off enuff to walk into DC and fire capitol hill and rebuild/restructure our gov and its game over man.
Yeah and your country the U.K. learned too late that with the removal of private gun ownership you become slaves to your government. Keep you opinions within the U.K. we don't need your views here in the U.S. but by all means keep screwing up your own country, believe me we'll do likewise.
No. Guns don't equal political power. It equals power to do something about the shit that hit the fan. Political and non-political. In my OPPINION, I think that everyone should own one. It would be equal and fair. But anyways, the issue about guns is that polititions are taking away the freedom. This is why people are scared. Some people want, and politicians want you to only rely only on them. Guns don't = political power. It = independent power.
Yes but you can have faith in things that are none religious. For instance Faith in Communism, like in the Soviet union. Which was probably the most advanced society in the history of the world. Long live the Culture of the "Dear Communist Leader". Let us pray for the rise of a true Communist society in the USA! Long live the Works, Writings and teachings of; Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and Chao!
Long live FREEDOM dummy - did not exist in USSR. One wrong word - away you go. No utube -would have been allowed. No other nation like America where you are born free - from God - not from the state - no one may take it, cause they didn't give it - no other country like it - get the hell out.
then let me ask you ... where do the laws of logic come from? There is no reasonably consistent answer apart from the only true & living God, the God of the Bible. All other so-called gods are flawed and inconsistent with reality with regards to their teachings.
There was a time when the church preached against Hollywood. Read your Dutch Reformed history. Now liberals like George Grant quote from these movies in their apologetics. He is the one talking about consistency so he needs to get it together. There are two directions the Church has gone. One is to separate and one is to integrate. George chose the latter and it will lead to nothing but death of the Church.
It is the same as quoting from Playboy magazine or doing interviews by it.
Hint: It started with Kyper and his doctrine of Common Grace.
"Because of this wide acceptance and appreciation of Kuyper's doctrine of common grace, it has become the prevailing view in most Reformed and Presbyterian circles."
"This is the doctrine that accounts for the church's attempt to make herself more relevant to the world by importing drama and dancing and contemporary music into the worship of God."
Have faith on God, but religion is a part of culture, and therefore religion is a manifestation of human to manipulate their faith in God. It's time to leave the words of cave man behind and move on! We are all programmed by God to serve a purpose here, nothing more and nothing less.
second American revolution? I thought that was lead by the A.R.M? Don't be stealin' A.R.M's titles.
Also, when the church was in control of all things we got something called the Middle Ages. A time of almost no foward momentum in technology until the Renasence.
What a load of garbage! Xtianity's entire perspective on the planet (THE WORLD THEY EXIST WITHIN) is that it must be dominated and subjugated because people are 'stewards of Earth' but yet this isn't followed or we'd have a legacy of clean environments & intelligent practices left to us from Xtians, instead they massacred the natives who know how to live w/o ruining everything. Charity out of duty is NOT compassion. Face it religion is a tool of control. Do what the book says or BURN FOREVER :(
You could look it at that way or that they're what's LEFT of a people conquered and pretty much obliterated in a genocidal campaign to industrialize the world. So it's hardly fair to consider that as the entire society as it'd have been before such events. The product of a Xtian worldview is all around us.. you know, pollution off the scale, wars all over.. it's how the 'bible' ends so it appears to be expected by mots
I wouldn't have conquered ANY of them. It's disputed as to whether the Aztecs practiced human sacrifice or that was symbolic (just as Xtians have the cross & don't crucify people on a regular basis). You're putting it in a binary good/bad format and I don't see the world that way. Just because a few people sacrifice humans is not justification for genocide PERIOD. And in the Spanish pursuit of gold that's precisely what they did. Plus Xtianity didn't manage to abolish slavery in the US, huh?
William Wilberforce? Ever see the movie Amazing Grace?
The tribes were in constant warfare with each other prior to the arrival of Europeans to the New World. There were more atrocities committed against each other, then by European settlers. We've now had over 100 years of peace int he Americas due to the leavening effect of Christian culture.
Most Indians were not killed in war, they assimilated into our culture intermarrying with Europeans.
There were Xtians fighting FOR slavery, also. I'm sure the tribes were in constant warfare, however it wasn't of the level perpetrated by so-called Xtian societies and it's the same thing in Europe. 100 years of peace? Did you miss WWI & WWII? Vietnam? Iraq? Afghanistan? It's hardly peaceful. You're clearly not willing to see from another perspective aside from your own. I've already BEEN on your side so I'll stop responding now. Thanks for allowing the comments, all the same :)
If the world needs religions to threaten them with eternal damnation in order to get them to feel a kindred with other suffering animals then we're screwed already. You don't have to believe any certain religion/philosophy to know cruelty from kindness or to help another person
Before Rome decided to become Christian, it was a mess. Most of Europe was going no where. The Christian thought helped it prosper, help each other out/work together and we will prosper. It gave the people hope in a hopeless society and they succeeded. No we want to eliminate God? Be ready then fr more 9/11's because God hasn't abandoned us our culture has abandoned God.
Please prove him correct! The fact is most of our founding fathers were not Christian, they were Masons, that is a fact, do some real research!
Christianity destroyed Europe in the same way it did many indigenous cultures in the Americas, executing thousands of people who refuse to believe this highly elitist and hypocritical religion. Judaism and Islam are no better. They are controlling religions with their own unique personalities.
Spirituality is all you need, not destructive religion
Deists who signed the Constitution and/or Declaration of Independence: Franklin, Benjamin Jefferson, Thomas Morris, Gouv. Williamson, Hu Wilson, James Signers of the Declaration who were Unitarians: Rush, Benjamin Adams, John The rest were orthodox Christians -- members of confessing Christian Churches Fact.
Atheist have killed 100 million people in the last 60 years, Christians 8,000 over 300 years..hmmm yeah I see your point..it's sharpened with bigotry and 1 side accusations good job.. satan will reward you well
What a funny mistake you have made, you have accidentally placed "Atheist" and "christians" in the wrong spots. Odd mistake but I suppose everyone makes them.
It was a mistake wasn't it? Surely no one is that uneducated.
You are aware Hitler was a devoted Catholic aren't you? That's the only reason he killed so many Jews, because the Catholic church has issued orders several times over the last millennia that Jews are to be annihilated as they are an enemy of the church. Look it up.
As for the 100 million people. The total losses in wars in the last sixty years doesn't even add up to that. The only things to have accomplished that are famine and disease. Things your god is supposedly the only one who has the power to stop...
you got some messed up stats, Christians killed 8000 over 300 years, I think you forgot the crusades and every other so called Christian government endeavor to bring god to savages but really kill them and steal their woman and resources you need more research
I always find it ironic when atheists cite the hypocrisy of Christians who killed, murdered or broke one of God's commandments in the name of religion. Obviously, some "Christians" have been hypocrites. The irony is that atheists need to borrow God's moral capital in order to impugn Christianity. Jesus taught us to love our neighbor and to overcome evil with good. But if there is no God, as the atheists claim, then anything is permissible.
I think it might be even more than 100 million. I'm an atheist myself, but I'm militantly anti-communist/socialist, and am glad I live in a christian nation. Christians generally respect my choice to live faith free, and don't fly planes into buildings because they don't like the fact that I'm an atheist.
That society is driven by beliefs and tradition is stating the obvious. The idea that this somehow supports a conclusion that therefore religious beliefs systems are good is silly. Humanity is learning at an expediential rate. 400y ago we knew very little. That they worshiped the sun and prayed to spirits in rocks is not an example to base our future on.
That societies have always revolved around a set of beliefs and traditions is stating the obvious. The difference between the growing humanism of today's society and our past situation is that as a species we have recently started to learn about the universe at an expediential rate. 400 years ago we knew next to nothing. The fact that old societies worshiped the sun and prayed to spirits in rocks is not an example for us to follow.
Evidence! Ha! I'm there with you. But these people make their arguments on emotion. Their religion is based on the comforts that an early indoctrination will provide. And when they see trends in society that challenges these beliefs they have an emotional reaction. To them society really is crumbling when we accept gay marriage and women's rights. Doesn't matter that there is no evidence of social collapse they are convinced the world has made a turn 4 the worse.
George Grant is an excellent example of a fascist. Our forefathers were so determined that government in America should never endorse ANY religion that they wrote the Establisment Clause and Free Exercise Clause, ("the separation of church and state") as the fist amendment to our Constitution. Grant and his ilk are more of a threat to America than any Muslim terrorists!
So Albino Tanuki, let me know where your videos are so I can see your instruction. It is easy to find fault. Perhaps you should try finding truth. George is really trying to provide you and others with what is the reality of our world today so it will do YOU some good. Perhaps you could return the courtesy.
Well humanism can also be a good thing: it shows thats all human beings are just as important in society as you are and that you should do whatever it takes to help your fellow man.
Muslim nations base their code on Islamic law, not biblical law. Armenia was once a Christian nation and there was no such slaughter on their part in their history. The Bible forbids individuals from killing except in warfare and self-defense or as a punishment for capital crimes.
Theres about 6 million dead native indians who would differ from your point. America was never a christian nation thats hogwash. and americans murdered millions of natives to steal there land. does that sound christian to you?
Show me that census. I got my numbers from a tibal leader off a video on U tube. I would think he knows more of their history than you do. Fact is whity came here and killed the natives to steal there land now a couple of hundred years later you want us to beleive this was/is a christian nation. There are no facts to support that
Perhaps the number is hi. History proves that their genocide was not a theory. the trail of tears was not a theory. So I should beleive that the natives sold every square foot of their land in new england. they must not have like the palce huh?
You assume that 'christian' is somehow synonymous with peace loving. No evidence to support that assertion. Christians have been as blood thirsty as anyone else.
Mormons fought on Indian terms and were massacred as Indians for it. The Genocidal Woman-Killer-Harney, the first year of the Utah war, aspired to Brigham's imagined throne, from it to direct the clenseing
The separation of Church and State is NOT the separation of Value and Society. He does not act for a Theocracy, but a Government which bases itself on the collective values of a people, a HOMOGENOUS system of AGREED UPON morals and mythologies. If we are to base our Government in conflicting Values, our nation will not function.
God's Law? Yes, perhaps we need more superstitions in our day to day lives. On second thought, no thanks, I'll stick with the Golden Rule (which evolved long before your magic Bible).
the bible is old.. very old . but even if you are not religious, the people that run this world are.. even if you do not beleive in evil and the occult these people do and practice it regularly.. so its good to get informed to see how these maniacs think.. (bohemian grove)
The Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
This golden rule which you claim you would rather stick with was derived from the "magic bible". The golden rule is paraphrasing the words of Jesus in the New Testament...
"And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise" (Luke 6:31).
and from many spiritual peoples' view, like maybe your own bible but excessive materialism, quest for power, etc. that is the essence of a certain kind of .....satanism
No, we don't all believe in a god or that we ourselves are gods. Some of us, those who actually understand science and reality believe that we are organisms in an environment. Only the misguided and mentally limited believe in superstitions like religions and that the universe was "created". So don't sit there with your limited view of reality and talk about how religion must always be present. It just shows how little you understand. Religion limits our nation by keeping us stupid.
If one believes in a 'god' that does not make one stupid. I would think you would be more tolerant. Could it be that there is a component of existence you are not aware of? If you became aware, your perception would be different, would it not? 'Ask' and you'll receive, but . . .there's the rub, isn't it?
you have the right to be what you want but does it give you the right to degrade others beliefs. If you argue that man evolved was not created can you explain to me how we evolved from a one cell organizm I am not being argumenative just curious
Religion limits people in any nation, not just our own, by keeping them slaves, not stupid. Science and reality is actually Enlightenment and Reason. One's own spirituality is a personal relationship with one's surroundings and thoughts. Revelation is merely hearsay and miracles go against nature's laws, thus religion is definitely not necessary. It is a man made device of control and power.
He seems not to see many histories are written by religious establishments in the name of their Gods. Do you see the blessing? Ritualizing God's will is the most satanic act of all but we love the kind of worship, Amen!
America is not a secular society. It is a Judeo-Christian society founded on Judeo-Christian principles. As this society moves further from it's foundation, it's failure becomes imminent.
I agree it was not originally a secular-society.but I can not agree with the statement that it was founded on "Judeo"(Talmudic/oral tradition)beliefs and/or Ritual.
Culture is NOT dependent upon faith. Faith is belief without evidence. I worship nothing, and have escaped completely from religion. Respect is NOT worship: I choose respect. Our secular society today is superior to every society which predates it, precisely because relgion is declining!
wow and history repeats itself, what do you think exactly happened to other great nations that controlled the world before, what your idea and objects of respect is very different then the next person because they are both made by you 2 different people, you might see respect and honor in helping people and humanity, the next person that is much powerful then you might see it in demolishing and destroying to world until it becomes his dominate reace.
Faith is "being sure of what you hope for, certain of what you do not see" All living creatures have a god. It is either the God that created them or it is one of their own making. Humanism has been declared a religion ( the word religion means "to bind back) by the Supreme Court. All religions are man made. True Christianity is in a person not a set of rules. Open your mind and read the Bible as true and God will speak through His Word. Read the English Standard Version.
"Culture is the legacy of faith" : the verbal trick here is to use the word 'faith' in an ambiguous way. Initially a simile for 'morals' or 'meres' to make some truisms about society, the meaning then coyly switches to a simile for religion.
Btw, not everyone 'worships' something.
The claims against Humanism are not supported by any evidence. Unsurprising, as evidence contradicts them.
what evidence are you talking about, because as far as i can see this is true humanity cannot live within a big society without relying on supernatural power such as god, look at the Persian empire, the roman empire, the caliph empire, and all the others, they ruled under one religion until they reached certain hight then they all clasped inside out.
Every previous generation has claimed that it's present generation is going to hell in a handbasket due to godlessness. Blame the humanist? How about the dark ages? C'mon, clearly the Renaissance was a humanistic age. This guy is pereptuating myth.
Although I haven't been to Cuba myself I cooperate with missionaries (who distributed one of my Christian newspapers there) who were harrassed and jailed for their activity. I have been to Russia and Ukraine 12 times and I personally know many pastors who were jailed for leading churches under communism. Just read Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Archipelago -- I suppose that book is just "propaganda"?
Christians in Cuba are systematically persecuted and jailed in Cuba. Your ignorant idea that communism can peacefully coexist with Christianity is a joke.
Unless you have been to Cuba yourself you have no idea what goes on there beyond whatever the American propaganda machine churns out for you. I've been there myself and have seen the churches and people of various faiths peacfully coexist alongside atheist/agnostics and secular humanist.
I am having a little trouble seeing the informed intelligence in the dialogue here. Hitler was a Christian? Communism is not secularism? Castro provides great health care? I also don't get the point of saying that communism forced secularism on people. Does this disprove that humanism is a failure?
Hitler did not believe in Germanic neo-paganism. He was a strong supporter of "Positive Christianity" which viewed traditional Christianity as a corruption of the original ideas of Jesus, whom Hitler regarded as an Aryan opponent of the Jews. You argued that living under hitler would be bad due to it being a secular/atheist society. How could this be if he was a religious man himself. You even admitted this when you mentioned William L. Shirer's book. Looks like religion had failed Hitler.
"Not many Germans lost much sleep over the arrests of a few thousand pastors and priests.... And even fewer paused to reflect that under the leadership of Rosenberg, Borman and Himmler, who were backed by Hitler, the Nazi regime intended to destroy Christianity in Germany, if it could, and substitute the old paganism of the early tribal Germanic gods and the new paganism of the Nazi extremists."
I gotta stop reading comments. Great demonstration of how mixed up the typical "critically minded" secularists thought process is. Hitler was religious. Religion failed him, therefore Christianity is false. Absolutely astounding -Aside from the historical inacuracy and socio-political naivity can't even count all the fallacies
Stalin forced secularism upon the Soviet people and did not allow for people to worship freely. Mao's China failed mostly due to an attempt at implementing a variety of unproven and unscientific new agricultural techniques, along side a militant approach to control of the people. While Pol Pot was leader of the Khmer Rouge he forced all Cambodians to follow his ideals or face death. Let's not forget that all your examples are dictators that forced there systems upon the people.
The majority in Japan are secular by choice and have not been involved in a single battle since WW2 and Japan's current constitution prohibits the use of military force to wage war against other countries. As for Castro, don't forget that he overthrew the Cuban dictator Batista and thanks to Castro, Cubans now have free health care, education, and there is little homelessness.
Shonkey is right in correcting you in regards to Hitler. Not only did he come from a jewish upbringing, but he adopted the Christian faith and is quoted in Mein Kampf as saying "... I am convinced that I am acting as the agent of our Creator. By fighting off the Jews. I am doing the Lord's work." he also quoted those same words in a Reichstag speech in 1938.
Hitler was not raised as a Jew. He rejected Christianity in favor of a neo-paganism that worshipped the Nordic gods and man in the form of the Aryan Race -- Jesus was an Aryan Superman according to the Nazis. Read William L. Shirer's The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich as the authoritative work on Hitler and the Nazis.
Does Grant have an oily cue ball stuck in his cheek? Culture can't be defined as the expression only of faith for the simple reason that not all of culture consists of faith. If those who don't worship god actually worshipped humanity, you'd think they'd have temples to humans, pray to them perhaps, obey other humans without question, etc. Grant is a pompous idiot.
You've obviously never been to Lenin's Tomb! The communists actually created a religion out of Lenin worship to replace Christianity. School children were taght to recite prayers to Lenin. This isn't second hand information, I've seen the prayer cards.
And your point is...? People will worship anything. But to claim that absence of belief in a god means that something else MUST be worshipped is simply assuming to be true something that must be shown by evidence to be true. This is an isolated case. Of all the atheists in the U.S., very few are communists.
That's right. They would sit in a classroom and a teacher would say, "Close your eyes and pray to God for a cookie." They'd do it and there'd be no cookie. Then the teacher would say, "Pray to Stalin for a cookie". And as their eyes were closed the teacher would place a cookie on each student's desk.
What a talking head, we aren't worshipping ourselves. There were wars, death, famine, disease, and destruction in the religious past just as there are in the secular present. There will always be someone who wants more, the more religious a nation the greater possibility of witch hunts, crusades, and other forms of religious persecution. There is not a greater chance for safety because it is religious
So you are saying that a Christian society is less safe than a society based on atheism or secularism -- You would prefer the Soviet Union under Stalin, Mao's China, Pol Pot, Hitler, Castro, etc.?
Culture is not a derivation of faith; that makes a mockery of both words.

Prescriptive ethics/morality (thou shalt, thou shalt not) is merely a tool to control others - which is immoral.
sivart123sivart 11 months ago

WendeShift 2 years ago
Stalin was an ex-seminarian who built an authoritarian dictatorship on a template put in place by Christianity. There was a trinity (Marx, Engels, Stalin), a Devil (Trotsky), miracles (Lysenko's biology), an Inquisition (the KGB). Stalin would never have been so successful had the Russian people not been trained by centuries of religious stupidity and servility.
fileboy2002 2 years ago
Interesting analogy. But you forget to mention that Stalin outlawed Christianity and was himself an atheist.
You are saying that "centuries of religious stupidity and servility" trained the Russian people for atheistic totalitarianism?
Doesn't make sense.
I agree that the Czarist system trained them for this, but it has nothing to do with religion. Christians in America were free during the same period.
jcr4runner 2 years ago
My point was that soviet-style communism--aka Stalinism--was atheistic in name only. As far as it's form and function, it was a mirror image of religion. As far as Czarism having had "nothing to do with religion," that is just not accurate. The Czar, like all absolute monarchs, justified his authority on the grounds it was divinely mandated. America were "free" relative to Russia because religion was seperated from the state. Thank for God for that (pun intended)!
fileboy2002 2 years ago
I can understand how one may be a Christan in "name only" but an "atheist in name only"? Does that make any sense?
There was both a cult of Lenin and a cult of Stalin because the communists realized that a culture (based on the word "cult") will eventually have some sort of religion.
The proposed a humanistic atheist religion in which man is God. Atheism is a religion that puts man in the place of God. Wherever atheists get control they try to "murder God" by killing or suppressing believers.
jcr4runner 2 years ago
Is an "atheist in name only" a person who says there is no God but really does believe in a god -- himself?

I usually try to examine other points of view and facts that may allow me to come to a different conclusion. However, just like a kid in a candy store, you picked only the facts that support your preconceived conclusion. Stalin was INSANE; his religion had nothing to do with it. If he was a hair dresser, would you assume that hair dressing drove him to commit countless murders? Of course not. Your guns, frightened americans, don't make you free; they enslave you. They tie you to the game which the power in your land plays. If you beleive guns=political_power instead of good_ideas=political_power then you've already lost.

No. Guns don't equal political power. It equals power to do something about the shit that hit the fan. Political and non-political. In my OPPINION, I think that everyone should own one.
Entropy56 2 years ago
What about a third option: To critique, combat, influence and reform?
I am fairly acquainted with Grant's work to know he is of the reformation strategy.

Hint: It started with Kyper and his doctrine of Common Grace.
"Because of this wide acceptance and appreciation of Kuyper's doctrine of common grace, it has become the prevailing view in most Reformed and Presbyterian circles."

Do what the book says or BURN FOREVER :(

jcr4runner 3 years ago
You could look it at that way or that they're what's LEFT of a people conquered and pretty much obliterated in a genocidal campaign to industrialize the world. So it's hardly fair to consider that as the entire society as it'd have been before such events. The product of a Xtian worldview is all around us.. you know, pollution off the scale, wars all over.. it's how the 'bible' ends so it appears to be expected by mots
GlowStormLion 3 years ago
First, I am a postmillennialist. I don't think the world ends in wars ad pollution.
Second, who would you have conquered?
The Aztecs who were doing human sacrifices when Cortez arrived?
The remote Amazon tribes who STILL practice cannibalism?
Or Christians who built schools, hospitals, orphanages, abolished slavery, fought poverty ...
... and so on?
jcr4runner 3 years ago
I wouldn't have conquered ANY of them. It's disputed as to whether the Aztecs practiced human sacrifice or that was symbolic (just as Xtians have the cross & don't crucify people on a regular basis). You're putting it in a binary good/bad format and I don't see the world that way. Just because a few people sacrifice humans is not justification for genocide PERIOD. And in the Spanish pursuit of gold that's precisely what they did. Plus Xtianity didn't manage to abolish slavery in the US, huh?
GlowStormLion 3 years ago
Christians led the fight to abolish slavery.

That they worshiped the sun and prayed to spirits in rocks is not an example to base our future on.
rantrandomly 3 years ago
That societies have always revolved around a set of beliefs and traditions is stating the obvious. The difference between the growing humanism of today's society and our past situation is that as a species we have recently started to learn about the universe at an expediential rate. 400 years ago we knew next to nothing. The fact that old societies worshiped the sun and prayed to spirits in rocks is not an example for us to follow.
rantrandomly 3 years ago
You've offered no support for your ideas except opinions.
I don't accept your argument that culture is necessarily a legacy of faith. The Eliot reference is just semantics, not an argument.
Everyone worships someone or something? Again, an assertion with no argument or supporting evidence.
Humanism as self-worship? Evidence please.
Is Society a mess, worse than in the past? Evidence, if you have any.
stthomasaquarius 3 years ago
Evidence!

Aethist + ism = the worship of nothing . . .

You want an IRAN? Turkey is secular. When it wasn't it
slaughtered 1-9 million Armenians. Christians couldn't/Wouldn't do this. We have Christian only Army
Units all. Lets just roll it back to Matheson and Carter.

DadsBlueAngel 3 years ago
Muslim nations base their code on Islamic law, not biblical law. Armenia was once a Christian nation and there was no such slaughter on their part in their history. The Bible forbids individuals from killing except in warfare and self-defense or as a punishment for capital crimes.

Theres about 6 million dead native indians who would differ from your point. America was never a christian nation thats hogwash. and americans murdered millions of natives to steal there land. does that sound christian to you?
muttergeo 3 years ago
There were not one million Natives in the contiguous United States in the 1600s when white people came here and there are almost three million today.
Where are the "millions" killed? Where do you get that number?
jcr4runner 3 years ago
Show me that census. I got my numbers from a tibal leader off a video on U tube. I would think he knows more of their history than you do. Fact is whity came here and killed the natives to steal there land now a couple of hundred years later you want us to beleive this was/is a christian nation. There are no facts to support that
muttergeo 3 years ago
The total number of Indians in all of North and South America was probably 6 million.
No one knows for sure. These are estimates.
Obviously the genocide theorists want to make the number really big.
To say that there were six million people living in the contiguous USA in the 1600s is an amazing claim.
jcr4runner 3 years ago
That's more than any of several countries in Europe at that time COMBINED.
Most of the tribes on the east coast died of small pox, not warfare.
Did you know that in Puritan New England, every square foot of land was bought and paid for?
jcr4runner 3 years ago
Perhaps the number is hi. History proves that their genocide was not a theory. the trail of tears was not a theory. So I should beleive that the natives sold every square foot of their land in new england. they must not have like the palce huh?
muttergeo 3 years ago
What is your definition of Genocide?
jcr4runner 3 years ago
You assume that 'christian' is somehow synonymous with peace loving. No evidence to support that assertion. Christians have been as blood thirsty as anyone else.

Mormons fought on Indian terms and were massacred as Indians for it. The Genocidal Woman-Killer-Harney, the first year of the Utah war, aspired to Brigham's imagined throne, from it to direct the clenseing
of the West for Christians.
Even those who favored the replacement of
Brigham Young as an elected Governor, were
horrified. Many had Mormon relatives
or former villagers gone West to Mormonism,
and it was hard to blame any who could not
live it or to forgive those who made it harder.

Religion limits our nation by keeping us stupid.
writemrbond 3 years ago
If one believes in a 'god' that does not make one stupid. I would think you would be more tolerant. Could it be that there is a component of existence you are not aware of? If you became aware, your perception would be different, would it not? 'Ask' and you'll receive, but . . .there's the rub, isn't it?

you have the right to be what you want but does it give you the right to degrade others beliefs. If you argue that man evolved was not created can you explain to me how we evolved from a one cell organizm I am not being argumenative just curious
citizenduress 3 years ago 2
Religion limits people in any nation, not just our own, by keeping them slaves, not stupid. Science and reality is actually Enlightenment and Reason. One's own spirituality is a personal relationship with one's surroundings and thoughts. Revelation is merely hearsay and miracles go against nature's laws, thus religion is definitely not necessary. It is a man made device of control and power.

America is not a secular society. It is a Judeo-Christian society founded on Judeo-Christian principles. As this society moves further from it's foundation, it's failure becomes imminent.

Culture is NOT dependent upon faith. Faith is belief without evidence. I worship nothing, and have escaped completely from religion. Respect is NOT worship: I choose respect. Our secular society today is superior to every society which predates it, precisely because relgion is declining!
seathanaich 4 years ago
wow and history repeats itself, what do you think exactly happened to other great nations that controlled the world before, what your idea and objects of respect is very different then the next person because they are both made by you 2 different people, you might see respect and honor in helping people and humanity, the next person that is much powerful then you might see it in demolishing and destroying to world until it becomes his dominate reace.
sobhan911 4 years ago

Unsurprising, as evidence contradicts them.
sadetec 4 years ago
what evidence are you talking about, because as far as i can see this is true humanity cannot live within a big society without relying on supernatural power such as god, look at the Persian empire, the roman empire, the caliph empire, and all the others, they ruled under one religion until they reached certain hight then they all clasped inside out.
sobhan911 4 years ago

Your ignorant idea that communism can peacefully coexist with Christianity is a joke.
jcr4runner 5 years ago
Unless you have been to Cuba yourself you have no idea what goes on there beyond whatever the American propaganda machine churns out for you. I've been there myself and have seen the churches and people of various faiths peacfully coexist alongside atheist/agnostics and secular humanist.

I am having a little trouble seeing the informed intelligence in the dialogue here. Hitler was a Christian? Communism is not secularism? Castro provides great health care? I also don't get the point of saying that communism forced secularism on people. Does this disprove that humanism is a failure?
jcr4runner 5 years ago
Hitler did not believe in Germanic neo-paganism. He was a strong supporter of "Positive Christianity" which viewed traditional Christianity as a corruption of the original ideas of Jesus, whom Hitler regarded as an Aryan opponent of the Jews. You argued that living under hitler would be bad due to it being a secular/atheist society. How could this be if he was a religious man himself. You even admitted this when you mentioned William L. Shirer's book. Looks like religion had failed Hitler.
takotheoktopus 5 years ago
"Not many Germans lost much sleep over the arrests of a few thousand pastors and priests.... And even fewer paused to reflect that under the leadership of Rosenberg, Borman and Himmler, who were backed by Hitler, the Nazi regime intended to destroy Christianity in Germany, if it could, and substitute the old paganism of the early tribal Germanic gods and the new paganism of the Nazi extremists."
jcr4runner 5 years ago
"As Bormann, one of the men closest to Hitler, said in 1941, 'National Socialism and Christianity are irreconcilable.'"

I gotta stop reading comments. Great demonstration of how mixed up the typical "critically minded" secularists thought process is. Hitler was religious. Religion failed him, therefore Christianity is false. Absolutely astounding -Aside from the historical inacuracy and socio-political naivity can't even count all the fallacies
a5dr3 4 years ago
Stalin forced secularism upon the Soviet people and did not allow for people to worship freely. Mao's China failed mostly due to an attempt at implementing a variety of unproven and unscientific new agricultural techniques, along side a militant approach to control of the people. While Pol Pot was leader of the Khmer Rouge he forced all Cambodians to follow his ideals or face death. Let's not forget that all your examples are dictators that forced there systems upon the people.
takotheoktopus 5 years ago
The majority in Japan are secular by choice and have not been involved in a single battle since WW2 and Japan's current constitution prohibits the use of military force to wage war against other countries. As for Castro, don't forget that he overthrew the Cuban dictator Batista and thanks to Castro, Cubans now have free health care, education, and there is little homelessness.
takotheoktopus 5 years ago
Shonkey is right in correcting you in regards to Hitler. Not only did he come from a jewish upbringing, but he adopted the Christian faith and is quoted in Mein Kampf as saying "... I am convinced that I am acting as the agent of our Creator. By fighting off the Jews. I am doing the Lord's work." he also quoted those same words in a Reichstag speech in 1938.
takotheoktopus 5 years ago
Hitler was not raised as a Jew. He rejected Christianity in favor of a neo-paganism that worshipped the Nordic gods and man in the form of the Aryan Race -- Jesus was an Aryan Superman according to the Nazis. Read William L. Shirer's The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich as the authoritative work on Hitler and the Nazis.
jcr4runner 5 years ago
Does Grant have an oily cue ball stuck in his cheek? Culture can't be defined as the expression only of faith for the simple reason that not all of culture consists of faith. If those who don't worship god actually worshipped humanity, you'd think they'd have temples to humans, pray to them perhaps, obey other humans without question, etc. Grant is a pompous idiot.
damianstone 5 years ago
You've obviously never been to Lenin's Tomb! The communists actually created a religion out of Lenin worship to replace Christianity. School children were taght to recite prayers to Lenin. This isn't second hand information, I've seen the prayer cards.
jcr4runner 5 years ago
And your point is...? People will worship anything. But to claim that absence of belief in a god means that something else MUST be worshipped is simply assuming to be true something that must be shown by evidence to be true. This is an isolated case. Of all the atheists in the U.S., very few are communists.
damianstone 5 years ago
That's right. They would sit in a classroom and a teacher would say, "Close your eyes and pray to God for a cookie." They'd do it and there'd be no cookie. Then the teacher would say, "Pray to Stalin for a cookie". And as their eyes were closed the teacher would place a cookie on each student's desk.
thornwellhead 4 years ago
What a talking head, we aren't worshipping ourselves. There were wars, death, famine, disease, and destruction in the religious past just as there are in the secular present. There will always be someone who wants more, the more religious a nation the greater possibility of witch hunts, crusades, and other forms of religious persecution. There is not a greater chance for safety because it is religious
shonkey 5 years ago
So you are saying that a Christian society is less safe than a society based on atheism or secularism -- You would prefer the Soviet Union under Stalin, Mao's China, Pol Pot, Hitler, Castro, etc.?
