Also loved how strong and supportive Hannah Thornton is. "I don't mind about the house. I care about YOU." Thornton may have lost his business and (apparently) his love, but he still is incredibly lucky to have such a mother, who stands by him through thick and thin. And Sinead Cusack and Richard Armitage are totally brilliant in their roles.
I love the way Thornton whispers "He was her brother!" and the very knowing look Higgins gives him afterwards. That made me crack up. I also loved the petition he gives to Thornton and how he worked till the very end of his last shift . It was a gesture of solidarity and it must have meant a lot to Thornton at a time like that. This meeting was his way of showing his support to Thornton and saying that all's not lost, that he still has a chance; both in his business and with Margaret.
Thornton gave up the bisiness because the only money he had to invest in `the scheme` was not his but borrowed and his higher moral standards would not allow him to risk money that was not rightly his.
Does anyone else think that Thornton gave up his business in order to be with Margaret? I'm kinda getting the feeling when I heard he didn't take up the deal with Fanny's husband. Even though he really could've made a profit accepting the offer.
@princesslovelc Thornton's business was torn from him by circumstances, despite his best efforts to not let it happen. What man would give up his business, be jobless, in order to be with the woman he loves? (Except if she were dying or something.) Thornton wouldn't take up the deal with Fanny's husband because it was too risky, too likely to have him losing money which belonged to his workers.
I dont agree that Fanny is just mean, in all her life, Hannah has been more loveble to John Than to Fanny. She always says that Fanny is weak and John is strong. When Fanny for the one Time in her life is right in à buissnis matter and John is wrong, she so want her mothers aproval and when she still doesnt get it, she Walks away, reslizing she never Will get it. I Feel sorry for Fanny.
@Hellarisa i agree that Fanny is pitiful in the circumstances with her mother, BUT when she walked in she brought it the wrong way, and think how she spoke of and to Margeret. I'm sorry but i do think that Fanny is mean despite the situation with her mother. (please forgive if my english is wrong, i'm dutch)
I don't really like Henry (especially when compared to Mr. Thornton), but Margaret is quite cruel to him I think. Not that she means to be, but it's so obvious he still hopes she'll marry him, and she keeps doing things that (unintentionally) give him that hope...
Fanny obviously has inferiority complex with her family, she's weak and vain and her mother and brother are strong. I can understand that she feels bad but honestly, enjoying the failure of your own brother...come on, Fan!
1.14-1.53 talk about rubbing salt into the wound, adding insult to injury and all the rest of them! Shes so mean to poor thornton!!! He's blinking a lot, as if he's about to cry, so shut it fanny!
Armitage and Denby-Ashe are SUCH an incredible team! They play off each other SO well! They're a pleasure to watch. Thanks to much for putting this up!
I totally love this drama. It's possibly my favorite BBC drama. Just for the pure fact of the combination of perfect casting of actors, composition of music, editing, cinematography, book to movie script adaptation etc. Seriously the best scene is when Thornton walks through "hell." Amazing. And of course the serious major eye candy with Richard Armitage never hurts either :)
I actually like her hat. It may not be the most attractive hat, but I think it fits her character. She's a no frills type of woman and the hat is very simple and plain. She doesn't dress overly fancy. So it makes sense her hat should be plain.
Mrs. Thronton has raised Mr.thronton very well into a gentleman, i wish she could have put some sense to fanny also , gosh.. she is really annoying. mrs.throntaon always accuses of Margaret, should realise that she has not raised a perfect daughter herself..
I think Thornton traveled to Hallston because it was his way to unravel. After the failure of his mill, he probably need to get away and clear his mind, so he went to the first place Margaret had been romanticizing like crazy since he first met her: her hometown. He probably went there to see if it was as "perfect" as she claimed it was or it was his way of getting to know her even better. Hence why the cravat is lost :)
Its funny how the mother doesn't say anything when Fanny is freaking out, but at the same time. I think she wishes that her son had taken the risk, but knows why he couldn't.
haha Mr. Higgin's face after Thorton whispers "He was her brother." Like "....well you aren't obvious....I guess I'll leave you to your emotions then...."
@lindamas1 Thank you ever so much for uploading this! I watched it three times in a row! I can't thank you enough. I just rented the full DVD version of it though and I loved how when Margret goes to Marlbough Mills she flashbacks the first time she saw him. I love this because it shows that they both were thinking of each other! I wish that had been on You tube but other than that this is perfect! Thanks again!
Can anyone give me a pacific name of the type of lace that the ladies wear around their neck and then comes in front of them (it's sometimes pinned or tucked in a belt around their waist) like Margret is wearing in 2:51-3:17 . (It's sort of a scarf looking thing.)
3:32 - I can stare at Mr Thornton's profile all day. :P My sis is going to buy a copy of this oh yeahh. Not avail in the Phil right now, I'm afraid. :)))
@5AmSuN Maybe your copy will have the scene I saw on You Tube before, when Thornton falls asleep at his desk and his mother covers him gently with her shawl. I found that very touching.
I'm From to Spain and I see that film in spanish. Now I can learn English more with that. I love Mr.Thornton and finally we see his human face and he's so sweetie.
Yes Fanny, I understand that your brother has been a tad patronising and you can't wait to outsmart him. But please, stop being a snob and quit gloating. Does Fanny even help her family out?
2 things: i could not help but admire his mother's strength and encouragement after their company collapsed. 2nd, can sb slap that fanny on d face and bring her back to reality
oh my effing GOD, the big reveal we were all waiting for; i was sure margaret was going to tell thornton about frederick when he was at her house, then ages later i was sure mr. bell would tell him in the office. but no, it comes OUT OF NOWHERE (and yet perfectly sensibly) from nicholas at the mill. i didnt even notice mary at margaret's house, but totally remember it now. this serial is absolute genius. i love surprises!
I love Mr. Thornton, but I also like how Mr. Henry Lenoxx speaks. He has a very smooth way of talking, although he comes across as arrogant sometimes.
I am confused. Is Mr. Thorton already over Ms. Hale because in episode 3 part 1 he walks away with Ann Latimer and she looks depressed when Ms. Hale walks their way Someone clarify the Mr.Thorton and Ann Latimer Situation for me please! And in episode 4 part 3 he walks away from the wedding with Ann.And in this episode at 1:52 does fanny say that forget about Ann now seeing how she will never have you now. So does he like Ann?
@MsNicoleBateman No, he never liked Ann. The book makes pretty clear that Margaret is the only woman who exists for him. Fanny and Ann are friends, so Fanny wants them to get together--wishful thinking on her part. As for Thornton's actions in the film, I interpret him as trying desperately to forget about Margaret (How's that working for ya, Thornton?). Hence, he sort of lets Ann fawn on him without his heart ever being in it. Just my thoughts. I hope that clarifies. :-)
@MsNicoleBateman Also, a tip Margaret could have used: If a guy feels the need to explicitly tell you that any foolish passion he may have felt for you is entirely over...it isn't. :-)
"He's her brother" --> That relief on his face! Amazing how much he's able to express by just the look in his eyes. Besides his beauty he is such a great actor. All that he does seems so real and natural.
@june251979 He wasn't a landlord. He was a boss - who was willing to work with his hands if he had to, to keep his business afloat. I actually thought that added to the authenticity of the movie.
@cj4sseasons Undoubtedly...much more authentic this way,in fact everything is very well done and the result is exquisite...I just love those scenes where he walks through the mill,supervising...and the bits of cotton are flying in the air like snow...
@TheGreyLeaf I disagree. I to read the book after seeing this movie but I rather enjoyed the witty banter between Margret and John. It was well written. I think I like the ending in the book better and more fitting than the movie. They are both masterpieces in their own media.
The pained look of sadness and regret on Mr. Thorton's face as he thinks of Margaret in the mill is so sad. That is until he is told that Margaret was hugging her brother. I LOVE how his expression changes in 5:30. Richard Armitage is an amazing actor. His brooding in this movie is so sexy and heartbreaking. It's all in his eyes!
omg i was silently screaming and my arms were jumping up and down and flapping i was so happy when thorton said "he was her brother" love higgins smile - he knew i think
@evilpride21 I think Higgins knew even before that, when Thornton asked him if it was Margaret who told him to ask for work. He said, "and you would have been more civil". Yeah, cause you love the lady haha..!!
That comment about Watson being hailed as a wonder boy, if only for 9 days- that's so contemporary to today's stock markets etc. A lot in this series is contemporary including Margaret's desire to not meet people she doesn't want to :) & of crse the social issue. Is the book as contemporary?
the comment about Watson is in the book. Margaret is really modern in her views and independent nature in the book too. This version stays close to the spirit of the book with some changes: the incident where Thornton attacks Stephens in the beginning and the train scene at the end aren't in the book but convey the sense of what happens in the book.
Thank you 'TooJubeJM1' for taking the time to reply. In reading abt Gaskell, I see she was concerned abt social issues & was pub. in a Dickensian paper. It's sad that in my school/ Univ. ed. her book's mentioned only in the passing as opposed to Jane Austen's- wish theyd add N&S to syllabus too. I also like how the screenplay is subtle in its revelations of characters & circumstances. Am really grateful to be able to view this fantastic BBC series- the eye candys a perk ;).
i know fanny is silly and frivolous (and really irritating at this part where she keeps saying, "admit it!") but i also feel a bit sorry for her, having to grow up with family who are always serious and preoccupied with business. and her mother obviously seems more attached to her brother and thinks the world of him. that can't be easy for her.
not that i love fanny or anything. but she is understandable and pitiable, even if she is not lovable.
I absolutely love this part. Everything is so bright...the Mill is the brightest we've ever seen and there couldn't have been a more brighter line than "he was her brother"
I think Fanny is just a bit thick. She blurts out anything she thinks of. John and Margaret are comparable in intelligence, and that's why their relationship is so interesting.
You're a phenomenal actor and we all love you!
Just saying.

@TheGreyLeaf I disagree. I to read the book after seeing this movie but I rather enjoyed the witty banter between Margret and John. It was well written. I think I like the ending in the book better and more fitting than the movie. They are both masterpieces in their own media.

Man I was *totally* dying for Thronton to find out about the brother - it would have been horrible if he hadn't!

i love higgins like understanding face when he tells thornton about the brother
naimazaheer 2 years ago 29
@naimazaheer Me too. 5:04, as he half smiles, teasing Thorton, as saying "I got you, you dummy" and at 5:34 "well, about time, you finally got it..!"

I love how his face starts to light up after he finds out it was her brother!! Love Mr. Thorton :D

Mrs.Thornton reminds me a great deal of mrs.Fairfax in Jane Eyre, of some weird reason. I love this series:-D
MissLicn 2 years ago 3
How so? The old woman is a wicked dragon^^"! Mrs Fairfax is much more friendly and, more kind.

evilpride21 2 years ago 20
@evilpride21 I think Higgins knew even before that, when Thornton asked him if it was Margaret who told him to ask for work. He said, "and you would have been more civil". Yeah, cause you love the lady haha..!!

That comment about Watson being hailed as a wonder boy, if only for 9 days- that's so contemporary to today's stock markets etc. A lot in this series is contemporary including Margaret's desire to not meet people she doesn't want to :) & of crse the social issue. Is the book as contemporary?
sarahroark 2 years ago
the comment about Watson is in the book.

Am really grateful to be able to view this fantastic BBC series- the eye candys a perk ;).

no its by ELizabeth Gaskell - published in 1854-55 - not contemporary, Margaret is just ahead of her time and a revolutionary as her aunt accuses her

i *love* the look on nicholas's face when thonton suddenly realizes. so funny.
thenicerevolution 2 years ago 16
i know fanny is silly and frivolous (and really irritating at this part where she keeps saying, "admit it!") but i also feel a bit sorry for her, having to grow up with family who are always serious and preoccupied with business. and her mother obviously seems more attached to her brother and thinks the world of him. that can't be easy for her.
not that i love fanny or anything. but she is understandable and pitiable, even if she is not lovable.
thenicerevolution 2 years ago 13
Yes. That's even clearer in the book. :)

I absolutely love this part. Everything is so bright...the Mill is the brightest we've ever seen and there couldn't have been a more brighter line than "he was her brother"
celestialbreeze 2 years ago 9
"it was her brother" MY GOD HOW AWSOME DID HE SAY THAT LINE- like he was breathing out 4 the 1st time :)
Sooo sweet :)

actual favourite part of whole series. and all period dramas.
his look. the realisation. the hope. "...he was her brother...!"

"you have made money"
"What, since yesterday? while i slept? how clever of me!"
cracked me up, that one. been a very serious sort of movie, hasn't it?
still, this one's going down as one of my favourites. thanks for uploading!

I think Fanny is just a bit thick. She blurts out anything she thinks of. John and Margaret are comparable in intelligence, and that's why their relationship is so interesting.

boy Fanny is such a bitch

When Thornton goes to Helston, it's so strange to see him in such bright lighting since we never have before. Of course he's still hot!
