Was just there this past weekend, cops drove right by and did not harass me. Drove right up to one of the entrances but was not going to go inside without my buddies Smith & Wesson!
anyone remember the glycerine drop waterfall strings when the Mall was new?? the 5&10 in there had live baby chicks for Easter 1967.. our old Polish neighbors had a coop of them ...after our mother said ENOUGH!
I once went there with my grandfather in august. we stayed behind the fence. I took 2 pictures, one inside his truck, and one right by the fence. both were of the jcpenney. we also drove around the back and i also saw the hardy shoes.
I just got back from there. Fortunately for me the police were not paying attention to us and we were able to go inside. That place I'd falling apart! It had just rained so there was water everywhere and everything was mush. Utterly disgusting but so worth the 20 mile drive. My friend got some really neat pictures I'll send you the link if you're interested.
When are they going to tear this shit down....my cousin was murdered there.this shit holds a painful memory. I hate driving pass there. It's so sad Dixie Square use to be a great mall when Harvery was great looking neighborhood
@Ladymodel--That's what I constantly hear. I went to Taft school in Harvey back in the 1980's, and haven't been back since. People say Harvey has changed for the worst. I am surprised they would leave an abandoned mall that way to rot for about 30 years.
@Interests2009 I think they are trying to tear it down; its just very costly to the community. Harvey isnt as prosperous as it use to be. The strip malls, I cant remember the area because I havent been there since the late 90's, but those arent there...it's really terrible..everythings dead and the crime rate is a little high
@Ladymodel--That's what it looked like in some of the other YT vids shot in Harvey. Like I said, I haven't been there in a quarter of a century. The next time I go through Chicago, I will try to check it out. I really want to see my Elementary School again. However, it's amazing that something like this can still stand. When I first saw the Blues Bros. many years ago, never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined the mall was actually dressed up for the filming of the movie.
Man i remember this area. I thought it always looked spooky at night. when we would ride by when i was little. But this mall was even closed when they made the blues brother movie. They had to reopen it and fix it up for the movie. It looks a little better now because they're tiring alot of it down now. I'll never forget when some girl got raped there in the 90s. Thats when me and my bros knew never to go back.
That is so amazing. It would be my dream to drive up to a place like this, and just look. really. the last 10 seconds were cool, to see what an expanse this place is. unfortunately I live in socal now, there's nothing like this to speak of anywhere near me.
The internet, new and bigger malls and wal-mart continue to kill off exsisting malls. It's not the vadlaism itself that people find of interest, it's the fact the mall closed and has been left to rot thereafter despite once being a thriving retail area. I have never seen such a prime example of a dead mall, and I live in Buffalo, NY, home of the "main place shopping mall"!!!
it's a bot sad someone has to bring race into this (i highly doubt all the crime and vandalism was all black people). While I wouldn't go as far as to say this is the greek ruins, it is still interesting, it is a sign of mordern times, and i'm sure my skin color does not define my interest.
Know what is constant reason for malls failing like this, its when certain violet demographics start to take over the area & in this case pick away at the dead body of the mall after they caused its down fall. I live by a dead mall in california called the hawthorne plaza which was used in multiple film like fast & furious TD & I HAVE PERSONALLY seen RAMPANT acts of theft and violence by the demographics that over ran the once nice city and mall which lead to its closure & residence flight.
Funny tho because Chicago Area still got alot of abandoned Jewel/ Dominicks stores all over the place, but some of them been took over by Food 4 Less or Ultra Foods.
Well, that City of Evergreen Park IL are planning on closing that ghetto ass "The Plaza" down and bulldoze it to build better shops and a condo/ Retirement condo.
It's got the musty/damp smell, but it's really not as bad as it may sound. Also, unless you have some UE experience, you really shouldn't go in there (and if you do, NEVER go alone).
Driven by it several times out of curiosity, whatever chance DSM had of being torn down and redeveloped is now long gone in these hard economic times. I see Harvey getting worse before it gets better. Most development ESPECIALLY in an already economically blighted area, has all but stopped for now. I see Dixie Square collapsing on it's own accord within the next 5-10 years, and never seeing another wrecking ball. Harvey missed their chance to get rid of DSM. We'll have to wait and see.
There isn't a New Harvey Rising. I live in Harvey. What are YOU seeing that there is improvement? Posts here from Months back, talking about improvements, and now look? It's WORSE! It's time for a NEW Mayor, not a new rising.
Yeah, what a waste... the whole town is a waste. I'm sure it's already a homeless shelter too. Maybe we can petition to bring it back. What kinds of stores shall we place in it?!?!?!?!?!
I grew up near Harvey (Hazel Crest to be exact). Don't be suprized if a handful of big-boxes (i.e. Wal-Mart, Value City, K-Mart, etc.) take over Dixie Square. The way I see it, indoor centralized plazas are now taking a back seat to big box strip malls....look at the place in Country Club Hills on 167th and Pulaski off I-57 as an example (a supercenter, a few spots, and a 12 screen movie theater), and is was developed by owners of a funeral home. I see something like that in Dixie Square.
ur retarded. the point was to show the mall where the blues brothers drove thru. and yes azgypsy, it IS a shame wen any place closes cause there was someone in the world who liked it. lol
Thank you for sharing this. It's sad when a mall, especially one that has been in a movie, closes, but it's sadder still when you see how they've let it go. The least they could have done was tear it down if they're not going to find another use for it. Just don't let it decay away like this. Sad....
They tore half of the mall down. Now there is a new senior citizens apartment complex. They plan on removing the rest of the mall very soon. I live in Harvey, and there is much growth. Old residents should visit and see all the new businesses and homes that have been built in the past 5 years. A New Harvey is Rising.
Rising?? Haha, yeah ok. Who are you, Mayor Kellogg? Nothing in Harvey is rising. They only tore down one store at the mall, and then nothing more. That was two years ago. So, it's actually been left in even worse shape than before. Not to mention the police force there, that is itching to violate any civil rights they can. I'm sorry you feel you have to lie about how your city conducts it's self, but you're not fooling me.

When was the last time you have driven through Harvey? Just as I thought, another "hater" with no sense of how to solve any negative situation regarding Harvey. I've discovered that most of the people who complain about Harvey used to live in Harvey once upon a time. Those same people don't give a damn about the city. Before you start judging the current status of this city, ask yourself "what the hell have I done to improve the city?" instead of criticizing the city.
Oh, because having a mayor that does business with guys who break out the shotguns and brass knuckles, when things don't go their way, must make the place a hidden paradise.
You're getting awfully defensive for being a resident of a supposedly "rising" community. Look, I don't know of a single person that knows the D.S.M. history, that doesn't wish the best for the frighteningly blighted city's future.
I remember that mall, it used to get alot of business, and after the Blues Brothers "drove thru it". It brought alot of people to see it. What a shame that all that space did go to waste.
I learned to drive stick there around the mall what a Shame!!!Someone do something like tear it down and make a commity garden for the people
