  • This intro's annoying

  • This is kind of useless... First of all it is not faster... Yes flash memory can read/write faster but you are bottlenecked by USB technology. Assuming that is USB 2.0, it wouldn't even be able to read/write faster than a standard green HDD. A better trick would be creating a virtual RAM disk on your computer. Instead of spending that money of flash drives, spend $30 on an extra 8gb of RAM, turn that 8GB into a RAM disk, and enjoy insanely fast read/write speeds.

  • IM THE 3000TH LIKER IM WIN??

  • "organizized"

  • can u put these in a raid configuration to make them look like one drive? osx has a utility for this but haven't tried it.

  • Comment removed

  • THAT TECH JUST CHANGE THE COVER ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz

  • 24GB SSD < 4 Flash Drives + USB Hub

  • make a RAID 0 to put all usb's drive under a letter

  • @MultiMateo89 with a Intel RST tool

  • if you run this in raid0 itd be a homemade ssd lol

  • @robthatguyx Yeah, It'll be cooler if it was modded to use a SATA cable too.

  • @robthatguyx not even close.... SSD's use 6gigabit SATA, this is using USB 2.0... the difference in read/write times is night and day.

  • @Level84 diddnt think of that

  • Put them in RAID 0: analogbit.(.com)/node/4

  • Organizized.

  • Mini partition wizzard maybe, can format flashdrives one primary and the others logic and asign them no name?

  • can you increase the GB on ipod-iphone-ipad please reply

  • @2996ism No, you can't. However, with some level of knowledge, a will to destroy an Apple product and a HDD or SSD able to fit in there, it MIGHT be possible. But it would be pretty unpractical.

  • @N0M4dIC1RST how do you know this

  • Now you just have to get a life, some money, and go get yourself a proper SSD...

  • Can't you just software raid those together?

  • who says "8 gigger" instead of 8 gig

  • ok what was the point of that. he just transferred the 4 usb ports over to the flash drive and stuck all of it in the case.

  • but you cant have 1 file over 8gb because they arent actually linked together

  • So is this just an oversimplified version of those new solid state drives I've been hearing about. Because if they're charging 500+ bucks for what is essencially a flashdrive in a hard drive case, I'm going to rage.

  • @jcrowley1985 not really, at about a dollar a gig, low cap solidstates are a good choice if you have 5-10 programs you want rapid access to. because they can utilize 6gigabit/sec sata 3 connections they are much faster than flash drives, and because its a single drive not 4 you don't have to play file management like tetris.

But yes, if you want to look at this like a child it is a cheap solidstate.

  • @hiphopguy0 Still this video is nearly 3 years old, I don't think solidstate was even an idea back then. I can just see some guy at Western Digitial or such company watching youtube videos, coming across this and telling his R&D to get to work on "the next big thing". Perhaps kipkay should have patented this?

  • Windows 8 will support Virtual Drive

"Microsoft will introduce in Windows 8 what it calls Storage Spaces – a method of putting drives into a virtual pool from which self-healing virtual disks can be created, with some resemblance to ZFS features." - Linux can do RAID on USB Pen Drives

  • and for last question some raid systems are avaliable

  • original harddisk pata input much faster than usb 2.0 so it unnecessary but looks cool

  • make one with 4 16gb usb flash drives

  • wow, this video was the very first make magazine video i evar saw, couple years ago... and still like it

  • I think you would be better off without using the HDD case at all, also you might be able to get all those discs together as an extended partition somehow (play around with disk manager) I was hoping u were going to do this properly with a sandforce controller or something *sigh*

  • not usefull at all....

  • My cables used to be organizized, but then I took an arrow in the knee.

  • @mikeyw02 Do you really still find that funny?

  • @mikeyw02 youre such a dumbass

  • Couldnt you just of done everything in video minus the actual HD case?

Seriously would of ended up with the same outcome...

  • Or grab the largest capacity CF card you can still find and a CF to IDE adaptor... Just a thought. Handy for SSD drive on an older system - say the old box you keep in the kids room for older games?

  • can you do that but the USB sticks should not separate, but all have a form

  • nice

  • or you can buy a hard and install windows on it

  • I don't get it. You put in four flash drives inside a hard drive casing. What's so special about that? Why not save space and just use the 4 flash drives without the case?

  • @chanchiem You can put it inside your computer, saves space.

  • @chanchiem Its all together... So you have X4 space in one case

  • @chanchiem In my school district we're not allowed to use flash drives. This looks like a hard drive, so it is a pretty good loophole. :)

  • @chanchiem because you can put the hard drive, with the flash drives, back in the computer and flash drives are virtually unable to be corrupted by being bumped unlike standard disk drives.

  • @chanchiem yeah but you might loose the flash drives.

  • @chanchiem its faster.

  • @chanchiem it takes the fun out of it.

  • @chanchiem Cause it looks cool and it's a lot harder to loose a larger clunkier hard drive than a small USB stick.

  • @chanchiem most computes don't have the space for 4 extra flash drives

  • @FastxFalling

But that's what the hub is for in the first place. You don't need to encase it in a hard drive case to make it possible.

But yeah, all projects aren't even supposed to be practical. I just thought that this would connect to SATA. That would've been something.

  • 4 GB x 2 + 8 GB x 2 = 32 GB!!!

  • @mackyclemen um your math is off. its 24... 4 x 2 = 8 8x2 = 16 16 + 8= 24

  • @mackyclemen 24 GB not 32

  • you need a mac to make all the disces to one

  • Comment removed

  • to create 1 drive, you must RAID!!!!!

    raid solves everything

    RAID 5

  • @UHOH3300 no, raid 0, it's faster and you get to use all of the capacity of the drives

  • @EmoticonMayhem yes, that may be so but RAID 5 is safer, and better for backups, also it is hot-swap capable

  • interesting.......

  • organasized,, lol

  • now replace them with four 64 gb sandisk ultra flashdrives (for more speed) and configure them all as one and you have a 256 gb solid state external hardrives

  • @DarkLuigi4321 and then put it into your computer tower, and you have an internal ssd :P

  • @ryley92 lmao you muppet, I am a career (sometimes black hat) penetration tester, get the fuck out of here before I root your shit windoze box. If you can't write your own shell code don't talk shit to me, get back to school and read books, I can tell you which ones if you want to learn.

  • wat r u going to make next? A computer?

  • Do a give away!

  • 2:56 I wonder if he noticed that he said "organazized" and not "organized". :D

  • curse you hidden screws haha

  • i have 15,5 hard drive

  • so theres no point in the old hard drive ._.

  • @godisaginger lol I know. really no point. xD the hard drive doesn't merge neither so really waste of time xD

  • @nghiahuunguyen I feel fooled, like a The Prestige kinda fooled

  • You'd need a RAID controller that supports USB drives - that may be a tricky thing to find. Alternatively you could go for pure software RAID.

But USB flash drive transfer rates are abysmal, you'd have to put quite a few of them into a RAID set just to equal the transfer rate of a mechanical drive, let alone an SSD. Random I/O performance would be better, though.

  • oh.. only like 30 gb?... i though we were talking about hundreds... im gonna go back to network drives

  • This video was disappointing. While sold-state drives are generally faster and more reliable than hard disk drives, but hard drives typically have eSATA or IDE connections, which are much faster and better suited for storing data than USB. Essentially, this is just a USB hub with 4 thumb drives inside a case, which leads me to wonder why you didn't put it in something decorative or functional. For example, you could put the assembly in a USB desk lamp and use one of the hub ports to power it.

  • just idiot

  • either raid or format as 1

  • wire all the wires to gether red to all the red black to all the black green to all the green and white or wat ever color to that same color its easy and worked 4 me but u will still need to give 12 volts to al of them so ull need some stepp ups with i made easly to go to 24.7 from 1 volt so ya its workin for me but i put 8 32 gigs in and wow my storig is boosted >:D

  • organizized?

  • HAHA Oganiziized!!

  • i have an 8TB hard drive :P

  • @CinosicaTribe i have a 1000TB PWNED DUDE PWNED lol i have more than 1 computer im a pro hacker,game desighner,modelr and more

  • @MrFunyman1234 no your not, and no you dont. hackers dont say pwned. 76.176.142.240 hack away bro :) fair warning sir, i'll be ready for you

  • @ryley92 Carlsbad is a pretty weird name for a city

  • @ZacBlack1337 lol, thats not hacking moron thats reverse tracing an ip

  • @ryley92 I never said I was hacking. Its amazing how quickly people on youtube descend to insults.

  • @ZacBlack1337 whatever bro, give me your IP and i'll show you how to hack

  • @ryley92 So what can you hack? Tell me what methods/tools you use and I will give you my IP. Because sir, I am fed up of you little sub7 kiddies thinking you are hackers when you have no clue :)

  • @tehnookster i don't discuss "what i can hack" over youtube. that would be an incredibly retarded thing to do. as for what "methods/tools" i use to hack, well, it depends on the method i decide to use to hack, and how mad i am at the target or what information i have available on the target. if someone pisses me off online, and all i have is his IP Address i will usually use a command called NBTSTAT to steal information from the target and display it on youtube for the world to see

  • @ryley92 so you don't know shit. As I suspected. Well done, you can use NetBios to do what? Show his windows username? HOMGZ PLZ NO!!111 What are you going to do if it's not windows? You useless little script kiddie, don't talk about things you don't know about.

  • @tehnookster lol keep talking idiot, that command is not for looking up windows usernames in any sense, and if you wanted to do that there are simpler ways. you are truly dumb. as i said before give me your ip and ill show you how to hack, because you just pissed me off. bare in mind you wont be able to turn your computer on

  • @ryley92 you're so cool

  • @KittyEggs duh

  • @ryley92 You live in Carlsbad,California. Time warner is your service profider. You live a 4563 oak view drive. Your name is Thomas Johnson and you live with your wife Tammi and your 12 year old son david. Your career is a scientist.

  • @SSHPCS2 100% wrong. other than the fact that i live in carlsbad and have time warner, but nice try none the less. by the way. type that address into google and it will say something like that isnt a valid address, because you fail HAHAHA. and even if that was me, its still not hacking

  • @ryley92 I still feel like I won, seeing that you can't notice a troll.

  • @SSHPCS2 no i don't

  • @MrFunyman1234 p.s. Pro hackers aren't called pro hackers and would never claim they are a "pro hacker" if sub7 is the limit to your skill set please shut the fuck up because you make people who know what they are talking about cringe.

  • @minecraftman9045 oh my god thats the most messed up thing I've ever herd, why would u go that to a baby??

  • You could buy a new hard drive...but why not spend MORE money and ruin 4 flash drives, a USB hub, and an old hard drive just so you can be a big nerd? Sounds like a great DIY to me...

  • @R31K88 I have about 50 old harddrives, so they're free for me. Flash drives are a dime a dozen. USB Hubs? Cheap. So why buy a new harddrive?

  • @kipkay what is your latest weekend project ?

  • Organinized

  • or you just can use an USB hub without destroying it.

    same result :|

  • Partition Magic would Merge those drives.

  • You can RAID a USB hub in Linux with software RAID, but you would be best off with a USB3 hub and a USB3 port, USB2 would ruin RAID speeds with its 480Mbps limit. Even better, just get a hard drive.

  • @mmstick

but this way you have a poor mans SSD :D

  • wow, tht is awesome! haha lol XD

  • Isn't it more cheaper if you buy 1 TB than buying few 6/8/32 flashes?

  • @spyderflair Maybe cheaper, but the fun is the making of this thing. Also knowing that you can. :)

  • Menuda idiotez!! Para eso coges y haces cuatro particiones en el HD y le colocas un adaptador IDE a USB.

What a stupidity! For that you take and make four partitions on the HD and put a IDE to USB adapter.

  • kipkays works for makemagazine?

  • man i have a 500 gb external hard disk why do i have to suffer to do all this

  • Check my channel for Skyrim in 1 minute!

  • @HowwToGame no

  • i remember making one of these, before watching this video!!

    hipster technology :O

  • WARRANTY VOID IF REMOVED...he never removed it...he just cut through it

  • now theres an new thing called SSD's you can get about 20mb for what you paid for this drive!

  • Kip, you can use a RAID adaptor to make the computer interpret all of the drives as one.

  • Collect enough of those magnets & the read/write arm coils to make a dandy little alternator for a wind generator.

  • you meen all 5

  • use a RAID configuration to make all the flash drives act as one.

  • @gameboy3800 How .

  • @almouloudi most newer computers have a raid option. although enabling raid will delete everything you currently have on the hdd.

  • @gameboy3800 correct

  • @gameboy3800 Is there a tutorial on this for noobs?

  • @getoffmyinternet isn't that what youtube's for?

  • @gameboy3800 derp

  • just click and drag 3 of the removable disk drives all into one then is all combind

  • @frankpel452 No that is not possible .

  • MORE HIDDEN SCREWS!!!! YES MORE HIDDEN SCREW MUAHAHAHA!!

  • why would i do that???

  • @jimmysalma boredom?

  • Yes it will be more interesting, if you place it inside the computer and make this flash drives work in a RAID manner.... :)

  • Buy 4 64 gb Flash Drives. Then you have a 256 gb Flash Hard Drive.

  • there is this thing called SSD (Solid State Drive) you could buy at Best Buy

  • @ZEROgring0 yeah but they're a hell of a lot more expensive, and this just seems like more fun.

  • Hell, I'd make it. I could use a bit more memory on a flash drive.

  • what a waste of money..

  • 4 USB through 1 USB cable? Now that's lag!

  • so pretty much you just used the hard drive as an enclosure, not using any of the hardware inside. You could have even done this with a cardboard box.

  • you didn't do nothing is the same that putting them with the hub and thats all

  • organazized lol

  • giggers....

    change the g to a n...

  • @iGoRawrrZ ninners? i get it

  • If you wanted to, you could make it internal by cutting the USB A male off of the end of the USB cable, stripping the wires, then attaching the appropriate connector, which you could buy, or salvage from an old computer.

  • why not just buy a flashdrive ill save you the time

  • @crabron69 because it is a WEEKEND PROJECT,. fuck people read a bit from time to time.

  • 2 Tips:

-You buy an usb type B female case connector and you weld it.

    -You do a RAID 0

  • 90 bucks totall!!

  • go to makezine and look for USB hard drive under computers and he'll show you how to.

  • u can make strip array i think in disk management

but i havent tried this because i dont have 4 disks

  • @ipeters61 oh 😳

  • Comment removed

  • SO pointless and

wat do u acomplish by putting the usb in a hard drive wen u can keep it open

  • Comment removed

  • @AymBro Aesthetics!

  • Orgasmized

  • ".. that I need to get organanized."

    Hahah.

  • Anyone who has any computer skill and has had a computer from the 90's has seen that HDD XD

  • I could see something dumb coming, but this exceeded my expectations. A plumber would make a more IT-hack related video than this guy :)

  • organizized

  • You probably figured it out by now, considering the date you posted this. You can span physical disks and make a single logical volume. It's called striping, or so-called 'RAID 0' ( I haven't tested it with flash drives ) Partition Magic has the ability to do spanned. There are also SSD drives that seem to have originated from what you made.

  • DId anyone FInd out how to combine them into a dynamic disk ?

  • one of theae days hes got to get "organazized".

  • or...ga..na..zized ? o_O

  • Not practical :P

  • thats awesome!!!

  • 550 gb computer!!!! (me)

  • kipkay u should have used the molex power connector as usb connector

  • @ashwindersingh18

    get an ssd

  • @MrSimson0606 They got no memory considering price only use them as boot and use a regular one for storage

  • my laptops hard drive broke down.is there any way to fix it or replace it with usb flashdrives???

  • @ashwindersingh18 Try using Compact Flash cards and an adapter instead.

  • @ashwindersingh18

Hey, your laptop drive is 2.5 and the one in the video is a desktop 3.5 drive. There is no room to put anything but the thinnest flash drives in it. Since you drive is connected via IDE or SATA connection, it is impractical to mess with it. It is cheaper and faster to replace the drive and install a fresh operating system..........

  • @777jonah888 thank you.that made sense and do you know any site to buy cheap hard drives?
