At least this jazzy song sounds a lot more than the great Velvet Banana song than Lou Reed can't seem to replicate himself. Sure go to the Velvet Under and Nico to hear a song that will have you jumping out of your seat.
I believe many of you are missing the point. If I remember rightly, they guys were about 3 sheets to the wind while recording this (and several other tunes - King of the Road, for instance). I believe that's reflected in the suitably "loose" performance.
@rbraxley I remember in the liner notes to the D.L.O. album, Peter mentioned being really drunk while recording 'King of The Road.' He never said they were drunk for this or any other song.
I like this version better. The VU's 60s cheekyness just seems kind of lame on this particular song. The subject matter hardly seems risque or shocking nowadays. REM make it sound almost sympathetic instead of mean or hateful.
I like both groups equally and this is just my opinion of this 1 song, take it or leave it. Have a nice day.
it does suck. it does. they are trying to reinvent, but its not fun, its almost bad energy. boring. you have to be that bored to like it that much seriously
I prefer this cover, mainly because of the great little idiosyncrasies of Michael Stipe's wonderful voice, but also I was just never a big fan of the Velvet Underground.
REM has covered alot of songs. They are rock fans. They do these songs because they these bands are there heros. They do a great version of Toys in the Attic. I saw them do California Dreaming in 1983.Wicked.
there's always a debate over cover songs and who's the best......search The Beat Farmers version......anything worth re-doing is worth re-doing louder. the best band no one's ever heard of.......check it out and turn it up....enjoy!
Great interpretation. I like how Stipe goes to a higher register on "better hit her" compared with Lou Reed's gruffer delivery, and how Buck does that same solo but on acoustic.
i love this whole album... any chance we could get the fabulous walter's barbecue song?? or the staggering genius of the original 'voice of harold?' that may be my absolute favorite.
I've never heard this version of this song. Thanks for uploading it!

I'm a huge fan of the Velvet Underground, but I love this cover. His vocal style honestly seems to make the song more ambiguous.

I like all of their album covers back then. They were so unpredictable and offbeat but very catchy.... The videos they did came off the same way...

I like this song, but I have to say that it reminds me of 'Here Comes the Sun' by the Beatles... :)

Or, maybe not.

People, this isn't a serious cover, it's more like a tribute cover.
REM isn't trying to outdo or reinvent the original. They're just having fun all throughout the record; there's nothing wrong with that, now is there?

Some covers are better, this one is not. REM had 2 really good songs, this is not one of them.

For my opinion, the only good song by R.E.M. ever. Perhaps because it´s from VU. haha

R.E.M. has a unique style. It can't be compared to the velvet underground. Velvet Underground is great too!
