you are rite about the sound of drums/space changing . the combination of Billy on the talking drum and Mickey with the wood marimba, then Jerry's distortion effects against Mickey's tone beam was cool. The fun of drums and space lessened for me when it went midi etc.
The video was released in 87 but it was recorded in 85. I used to love the drums (I'm a drummer) from the 84-85 period when Mickey used the wood xylophone. After 87 it got a little too electronic for me (space too) with all the midi stuff. I like the sound of real percussion.
This so-far sessions 1987 is Fantastic, It most certinly does have a blue label, I am currently missing the one often rented THE LABEL IS RIPPED A BIT...I LOVE who finally posted,
Two drummers keeping the crowd enthralled while the rest of the band takes a break. A signature of Grateful Dead concerts in the 1980's, was usually followed by 'Space', where Phil Lesh and the keyboard player would entertain after the drummers finished. It was always a thrill when Jerry would come out and start jamming with the rest of the band, and then ease into a song.
Space is the place. Turn it up. Loud.
