It's too pronouced. I should be more relaxed. Instead of saying TOE MAY TOES it should be more like tuhmatoes. roll your "r"s carne is not an english word. 1st sopranos have pitch all over the place. theres an alto who sticks out like a sore thumb. someone tell her to go sing broadway.
My choir is doin this in SSA format!! Your timing sounds a bit off and to be honest it sounds a bit dead, but I understand that after so much practice songs loose their appeal... I like the way this song has a proper tune for all the lines, imstead of leaving 2nd sopranos and altos with a boring accompaniment.
nice! carne sounded too much like car. the "a" should have a wider sound and the "r" can be emphasized a bit more with a bit of a roll. basses: more volume and listen to your notes a bit more. the "o" in "kong" should be more of a straight "oh" without the "h". less vibrato in all voices will create a clearer sound as well. the tempo can be faster for a better sense of rhythm. good work!
I feel like the tempo is a little off, and the balance as well. The thing with sopranos is that they can't always help overwhelming anything. I think it's just something that tends to happen in most situations. No one should be in the background - there should be an established, clear, concise balance. Overall, I've heard much better...but, honestly I can't say that I've heard worse...
Instead of making it "chili con carne" with a hard r, flip the r by giving it a slight roll. My director and voice teacher always says "English is our worst language" because it's very easy to make consonants develop hard and to not line up vowels as easily.
Basses are amazingly not flat for most of the song (most common intone problem.. i used to be a bass :D) The unison parallel octaves between the tenors and 1st sops seem to be very well in tune.. great job lining this part up! The last thing the ensemble should be sensitive to is vowel blend and consonant shaping. This may help with tonal development issues. Smooth out the line of the words.
The second sopranos seem to be overpowering the rest of the group which is neither aurally balanced, nor good for the musical line of the song. The alto/CT part brings out some needed dissonance and open thirds that are otherwise not there since the Tenor/First Sop line are in parallel octaves for a good half of the song. I sing tenor on this so the balance is important to me! Other than that, altos, when audible should watch their intonation as they are a little sharp on parts.
Just a few tips here from a fellow music student. :)
I sang this with the small jazz ensemble I'm in. Your group is 4 guys and 4 girls so balance issues shouldn't be a problem, but the tenor and alto part is hard to hear (alto if SATB reissue version, countertenor if SACTB [origional real group] version). In this song it seems as if it sounds the best if the ensemble balances as a whole to the alto/countertenor line (depending on your issue version).
