Here's the thing, There are standard poses for portraits that are known to work well and so are used often especially by "portrait Mill" studios like wal-mart for example.

Think of your kids school pictures. They all look basically the same even though they are taken years apart. Plus some people develop a pose they think makes them look good and then use it for pictures taken of them.
