Not going to lie the combat in itself is easy. however i'd actually like to see fighting. Not this wrist flicking crap that happens all of the time.
If you have a weapon in your hand and flick it at an opponent in a real fight and he has armor on he is just going to kill you....so why not put the wrist flicking not usable. Too an extent it would dall under the criteria of whipping.
one thing I've found puzzling is what do you use for a stabbing tip on your spears/pole arms/ swords/ daggers? Is it an open cell foam tip for a stabby, or just more closed cell foam like blue foam?
@itachi1303 Ultimately, its up to the user. Common, cheap, and affordable stuff used in Cali is simply Camp Pad. Depending on what weapon class and weapon size your going for, one can use any from one to five generally, though it has been seen more does help, it is generally not used past four - five for polearms.
Other techs simply use fiberglass/graphite rods in combination with micro cell foam or MC foam to round off the tips. Heavier, but more durable.
Well... a decent wack with a latex-coated foam weapon with a fibreglass rod inside in your face still has a good chance do break your nose, or at least give you a nosebleed. Now consider how painful a blow on your ear or a jab in your eye would be... even with a rubber tip, or whatever.
Good point. But not everyone wears a helmet in LARP. And I believe that even with a helmet, the risk of injury is not fully dealt with. Now yes, other parts of the body can get hurt too... but we all know that injuries to the head an neck are pretty much the most dangerous.
The way we play "hits below the wrist" in my group is that if you are wielding a weapon in that hand, a strike below the wrist does not count. If that hand is free however, it is far game. The idea behind this is that the "hand on weapon" rule mimicks what the affects of a handguard would be.

No shots to the head? Come on... they're foam weapons.

The whole goal is to keep the game as cheap as possible... shots to the head would possibly bring up a whole slew of insurance problems.

Well you always could wear helmets. You could probably find some cheap ones with visors or get cheap fencing masks or something.
Believe me the extra money is worth it. It is so satisfying to just whack somebody in the head.

the rules in place to avoid injury, a helmet would be a solution to that problem but then everyone needs helmets lol
