@9snaker The same thing happens to me too. I hear only MIDI tracks. The funny thing is that when I put the game on my old WIN 98 i heard the CD music and not the MIDI files.

well i looked in the "sounds" folder, and there were just thouse 9(?) midi music files, like they were not installed... maybe in a different folder... but then i had to make a special search

@9snaker OK! I actually found out what the hell is going on! It seems that AOE1 used both MIDI and CD soundtrack! The CD soundtrack is supposed to start playing if you play the game with the CD in! Otherwise, in order the game not to be mute, the developers decided to have a MIDI soundtrack as well as a "backup"! The MIDI soundtrack can be found in the sound files, BUT the CD soundtrack is NOWHERE in the files! However, I put the CD on a CD-player and I heard the CD soundtrack finally (continue)

@9snaker after many years(except from youtube)! There is a problem though with the Gold edition! I don't have it, I have the original from 1998, but I heard from a user that when the developers repackaged AOE1 in GOLD edition, they forgot about the CD tracks ( the ones you can hear on the video), so only the MIDI files play as music! What version do you have the gold or the original?

makes senes (maybe they cut it out, like other gamedevelopers did that on the platinum version for example MGS2 is without the making of)

mine? none! :D i have the expansion pack (with the 4 other nations, e.g. rome)

it has 2 discs (4 nations here, and 4 there :D) so i don't believe it's a space problem ;-)

but it's weird, that they made high quality depth music AND midis!? i thought just midis because its so old, and to save space! oO

@Stonezorz You don't know the evil trick of hunting the elephants? Just build the plot of a wall around them - in the first game, you couldn't walk over the building plots regardless of how much they'd been built. With four pieces of wall, you could box them in and kill them easily. Then just destroy the wall.

@Drake22bell I disagree, 2 was the best in my book, you could have some of the most epic battles I have ever seen, in 1 you were very limited in size and you had wait for 1 unit to be built before you could click it to build another one, where as in aoe 2 u could do it til it made that crunching noise. and aoe 3 was ok. aoe 1 was better tho

@RyZombie619 AoE1 required the most skill of all of them. Queues turned people lazy as hell. Pump timings got sort of ignored...you couldn't overpop as much...the farming in RoR was laughable...the graphics in aoe2 were funny too, they tried too hard.

This is the CD music, there's different music installed to your harddrive as far as I can tell.

My own version never plays these soundtracks for some reason. A shame, they're the better of the two sets :(
