Dude whatever you are taking is not an antibiotic. Antibiotics = I.V, per os ,topically or as a suppository and as far as i know they are not administered intramuscularly . Correct me if i am wrong.

@PhysiologicAli you're a bit wrong, there are enough antibiotics that are administered through I.M. for example: rocephin (ceftriaxon). Of course also an I.V. can be used, but it's not strange to use an I.M. for an ambulant person.

@PhysiologicAli NP besides it can be it's different in your country. I mean protocols are different in every country. Just like cpr, in this country we still do 'artificial respiration' however I just learnt Japan doesn't do it anymore because they did some studies and didn't find it as effective as we thought. So perhaps it's the same with antibiotics. But yeah if you're from the pathology department, it's pretty natural you know more stuff about other areas than I do. We all work together :P

The injection site (Dorsogluteal) is very dangerous because of the sciatic nerve. It's anatomically different in each person, and you can cause serious damage (i.e paralysis) if you strike this nerve at that injection site.

You don't have to do z track with every IM. You only do z track if the med has a high viscosity.

Easy. Wipe. Stab. Pull. Push. Pull. (Wipe with alocohol, stab the needle into the injection site, pull the plunger (make sure there is no blood), push in the medicine, pull out the syryinge. Better to do it fast, its actually more painful if you do it slowly.

Pinch the skin either side and the needle will penetrate easier.
